Hidden Voices: The CBI, corporate lobbying and sustainabilityRecommendationsThe Government needs to• Rigorously challenge CBI claims on the impacts of public policy and regulation onbusiness, in particular with regard to environmental and social issues.• Demand that the CBI provide accurate, relevant and objective evidence to substantiateits claims that UK companies’ competitiveness suffers from regulation to protect theenvironment.• Assess the wider costs and benefits of regulation, not just the short-term costs to onesection of the economy.• Fully implement the recommendations of the Environmental Audit Committee prebudgetreport on tax and the environment of April 2005.• Seek out a range of views from progressive and innovative companies that will gainfrom comprehensive policy and legislation designed to address environmental and socialchallenges.• Champion the wider public interests of sensible and progressive regulatoryframeworks, in terms of health, safety, environment and wellbeing, innovation andinvestment.• Immediately release information on request about company meetings with Ministersand senior officials, as a matter of public trust.Companies need to:• Consider whether the CBI can adequately represent their position, especially onsocial and environmental issues, where the impact of regulation differs from one sectorto the next.• Consider whether individual sector trade associations would represent them moreeffectively than a cross-industry body.• Be prepared to break from the pack and speak out when their position differssignificantly from that of the CBI or other trade associations.• Disclose their lobbying position on key public policy issues that affect their business(for example, climate change or human rights) in their annual sustainability report.12
