NSK has revealed how spherical 

roller bearings manufactured from its 

Super-TF steel are saving a cold rolling 

mill operator approximately ?16,300 

(£13,200) by preventing reoccurring 

bearing failures that were causing 

shutdowns and production losses.

It has been revealed that the Gloriana – a £1million, 94ft royal 

rowbarge built for the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant – will 

have help from a marine drive system supplied by British high 

performance DC motor company LMC Ltd. 

The complete bespoke ‘Merlin’ 

marine drive system includes 

two electric motors, the ignition, 

throttle and display – all of which 

were handmade by LMC’s skilled 

team in Honiton, Devon. Despite 

being a rowbarge, the motors were 

installed to make it smoother and 

more efficient to manoeuvre the 

Gloriana in and out of its moorings, 

and to help combat strong 

currents if necessary. They provide 

over 90% efficiency with zero 

carbon emissions, are silent and 

lightweight, and have been designed 

to re-charge the batteries when 

they’re not driving the boat. In the 

case of the Gloriana this is done 

using kinetic energy from the boat’s 

movement through the water. 

Trevor Lees, managing director of 

LMC commented: “It was important 

for this prestigious royal project 

that the motors were British-made, 

clean, green and economic, and 

we were pleased to be given the 

opportunity to come up with a 

bespoke marine drive system that 

sailboat l’Hydroptère and the zeroemissions 

racing sailboat, Acciona, 

which has recently been built in New 

Zealand, funded by the Spanish civil 

engineering company of the same 

name.

Record high apprentice intake repeated NKE’s new General 

In 2011 HepcoMotion® engaged its 

highest number of apprentices since 

1998. And this year that figure will 

not only be matched but also the 

intake will make provision for the 

development of young engineering 

talent for more academically 

demanding roles within the company. 

This is a clear indication that 

HepcoMotion® is investing 

in workforce skills as well as 

capital purchases to underpin the 

impressive business growth it 

recorded at the end of last year. 

Indeed 2011 was the company’s 

best ever trading year in its 43 year 

history and the trend continues. 

The urgent need for high calibre 

talent within its R&D department 

has prompted linear motion 

manufacturer, HepcoMotion®, to 

engage two higher- as well as four 

advanced apprentices. Both levels 

combine academic study with 

practical training in the workplace 

but whilst the advanced apprentices 

typically study for a B/TECH National 

Diploma, the higher apprentices 

start at Foundation Degree level. 

“Studying engineering to degree 

level within the context of an 

apprenticeship produces a uniquely 

covered all these requirements. 

We have been witnessing a growing 

trend in the boating industry for 

electric motors, whether it’s to 

provide primary power to sailboats, 

yachts, canal cruisers or in-shore 

motorboats, or even assist classic 

rowbarges and boats with additional 

power, such as the Gloriana. The 

key driving force behind this trend 

is the fact that the motors can be 

designed to re-charge the batteries 

when they’re not driving the boat. 

This can be done through a number 

of different methods, whether 

it’s the boat’s movement through 

LMC’s Trevor Lees working on the motors 

capable individual that cannot be 

easily found by other means,” 

explained HepcoMotion®’s Training 

Manager, Bob Gregory. 

He continued: “At all apprentice 

levels we seek those with good 

problem solving skills and 

enthusiasm for all things mechanical. 

With our higher apprentices we look 

for these attributes to be more selfevident 

and clearly defined.” 

Clearly HepcoMotion®’s method 

of selection has proved immensely 

successful as in the last four years 

all but one of its newly qualified 

apprentices has remained with the 

company. Indeed ex-apprentices 

have swollen the ranks in technical 

sales, quality control and project 

engineering. 

As in previous years, HepcoMotion® 

will work in partnership with Brunel 

and Gordano Training which now

The Gloriana, which was built by 

master boat builder Mark Edwards, 

is the result of a project by Lord 

Sterling, who wanted to create a 

floating tribute to the Queen using 

sweet chestnut from Prince Charles’ 

private estate. It was officially 

named by the Queen when she 

visited Greenwich to unveil the revamped 

Cutty Sark. It will be rowed 

by 18 oarsmen, leading a flotilla of 

over 1,000 boats and more than 

20,000 people – including the Queen 

and Prince Philip – that will sail down 

the River Thames on 3 June to mark 

the Diamond Jubilee. The project was 

overseen by Byrne Longshore & Co. 

Ltd, a maritime cost engineering and 

project management company. 

LMC’s motors have been installed 

in a wide variety of applications, 

including vehicles, aerospace and 

industrial projects. Previous marine 

projects LMC has been involved 

with include the high-speed French 

operates under the auspices of City 

of Bristol College. Although the 

higher apprenticeship scheme will 

satisfy HepcoMotion®’s immediate 

need for higher calibre apprentices 

it is hoped that those on the 

advanced scheme will ultimately 

take the opportunity to extend their 

studies on completion of their initial 

qualification. 

“Developing our own graduates 

in this way has certainly proved 

extremely successful in the past,” 

concluded Bob Gregory. “We have 

sponsored advanced apprentices 

through HNC, HND, Foundation 

Degree and Honours Degree. It all 

depends on the aspirations and 

abilities of the individual but the key 

benefit for HepcoMotion® is that the 

apprentice matures within the culture 

of our company.”

Brammer backs EDF Energy’s 

Paralympics fundraising effort 

Brammer, the UK’s leading

Charity Cycle Challenge with a

Between 14 and 16 June, a

Exclusive new range of renewable

Climate Center has signed an 

exclusive agreement with Advanced 

Engineering to distribute a new range 

of heat exchange and maintenance 

chemicals for use in heat pumps and 

solar heating. 

The range includes six heat transfer 

and flushing fluids specially 

formulated for use with heat pumps 

and solar-powered heating systems. 

Climate Center’s Robert Franklin 

said: “As gas and electricity prices 

escalate, renewable heating is 

becoming increasingly attractive to 

businesses and consumers. However, 

like all systems, they need proper 

maintenance to ensure they continue 

to perform efficiently.” 

Advanced’s new range includes 

TerraFlow, a specialist heat transfer 

fluid for use in heat pump-based 

boilers, and two versions of 

StellarFlow, optimised for use in both 

flat plate and vacuum tube solar 

heating. 

The fluids have been formulated 

to remain fully active for up to five 

years and protect systems from 

ice and bacterial growth. They are 

supplemented by a comprehensive 

set of cleaning solutions. 

Colin Pratt, technical director 

of Advanced, says: “As with acr 

plant, renewable systems are 

prone to sludge build-up over time 

and, ultimately, pipe blockages, 

if not properly maintained. We 

have developed the new flushing 

solutions, TerraFlush and 

StellarFlush, to safely remove dirt 

deposits from piping, improving 

reliability and performance.”

Donghua at cutting edge 

Attending the Drives & Controls show proved a big hit for the 

UK arm of one of the world’s largest chain manufacturers. 

Bob Wellsbury, managing director of 

Donghua Limited, explained: “Chain 

manufactured by Donghua has been 

used in the UK for over 20 years 

under well-known brand names; 

in fact most people have been 

using our chain without realising 

it! However, since 2009 our own 

Donghua branded chain has also 

been available in the UK.” 

“We’ve been extremely pleased 

with how well our chain has been 

received by the UK market, and 

therefore decided to exhibit at the 

Drives & Control Show so we could 

talk directly with both designers 

and OEMs on behalf of our growing 

network of Product Partners and 

Dealers who sell our chain direct to 

end-users. Our new tactile displays 

generated a lot of interest enabling 

us to physically show delegates the 

quality of our chain products.” 

The company was particularly 

impressed with the number of 

delegates attending the show and the 

quality of leads and, as a direct result

products, has purchased two 100 

tonne presses. These presses will 

be used to cut large pitch chains and 

rotary chains enabling the company 

to fulfil growing customer demand for 

chain in specific cut lengths. 

Bob explained: “One press will 

be used to cut roller chain in our 

workshop in Wolverhampton, 

adding to the new Attachment 

Chain Production facilities which we 

launched at the Drives & Controls 

show. This enhanced workshop, 

combined with our 24/7 ordering 

service, means that Donghua can 

produce special attachments, 

bespoke attachments and special 

cut length roller chain in the UK 

and round the clock; allowing us 

to respond quickly to bespoke 

requirements and deliver whatever 

our customers want, whenever they 

need it!”

Power Jacks conjures up 

magical motor solution 

Leading engineering and manufacturing business Power Jacks helped 

to get the show on the road when a top European car manufacturer 

wanted to stage a spectacular UK launch for a new model. 

Power Jacks engineers had just three 

weeks to devise and deliver a custombuilt 

system for a stunning showcase 

that would tour major shopping 

centres up and down the country. 

And the team responsible for meeting 

the commission proved more than 

up to the challenge, creating an 

innovative solution centred upon 

Power Jacks’ class leading C-Series 

cubic machine screw jack. 

The Power Jacks system was pivotal 

to a dramatic ‘magic mirror’ effect 

that slowly unveiled the car to 

impressed onlookers as far afield as 

Glasgow and London.

and down in synchronisation so the 

top and bottom halves of the car 

were revealed at the same time. 

We were delighted to have played 

a part in creating such a fantastic 

effect. It underlined our capabilities

To keep the mirror operation simple 

yet effective, Power Jacks engineers 

opted to use a four screw jack 

system in an H-configuration – the 

type commonly used to lift a single 

platform in one direction. 

“For this application, however, the 

design needed to move two platforms 

in opposite directions, at the same 

time and rate,” adds Bruce. 

To achieve this, Power Jacks 

designed a special lead screw which 

had right hand and left hand threads 

on the same lead screw, built into 

the screw jack body. The screw 

length matched the height of the 

installation: the upper half had a right 

hand thread form and the lower half 

had a left hand thread form. 

A lead nut with corresponding thread 

ran on each thread form portion of 

the screw, so each screw in effect 

had two lead nuts. Therefore the 

system had eight lead nuts in total 

(two per screw jack) – four connected 

to the top mirror section and four to 

the bottom mirror section. 

As the jacking system was operated, 

the nuts ran in opposing directions 

so the mirror sections did likewise 

at the same speed in a mechanically 

synchronised manner.

for roller and conveyor chains. Sold 

under the Elidur brand, the highperformance 

lubricant was developed 

especially for Elite chains to replace 

the current initial lubrication of all 

standard roller chains up to 32B or 

ANSI160. Manufacturer’s tests have 

shown that the optimised blend of 

wear additives improves the service 

life of Elite roller and conveyor chains 

by up to 250 percent. 

As well as clearly improving the 

chains’ wear lifespan and minimising 

elongation during run-in compared 

to conventional long-term lubricated 

chains, the new lubricant has very 

good adhesive properties, provides 

good corrosion protection, reduces 

chain noise and is compatible with 

other lubricants. Elidur is a mineral 

oil based chain oil with additives, is 

water-insoluble and non-toxic. It can 

be used in temperatures ranging 

from -5 to +120 degrees Celsius. 

A big advantage of this system is 

the use throughout of ‘Flat-Face’; 

self-seal couplings, which make 

the system extremely clean in 

use, a fact endorsed by a number 

of clients who use the system in 

carpeted training rooms. 

The portability has been a major 

factor in a client in the USA 

purchasing a number of these 

systems, due to the amount of ‘on 

the road’ training that they cover 

and also the distances involved. At 

there main centre they already had 

a number of traditional hydraulics 

training trolleys but these are not 

suitable for transportation for 

‘In-house’ training at their clients 

premises.

To change negative perceptions 

of engineering, more focus is 

needed on primary schools 

As a major employer in Llanelli, Schaeffler UK is continually 

investing in its people and working closely with the local 

community. A key part of this commitment is supporting the 

local college in helping to change young peoples’ negative 

perceptions of engineering. 

“During the last 30 years, we’ve 

developed a very close working 

partnership with our local college, 

Coleg Sir Gar, which has played a 

significant role in our successful 

engineering apprenticeship schemes 

and in helping us to change local 

school pupils’ perceptions of 

engineering.” says Donna Williams- 

Bevan, Training Officer at automotive 

component manufacturer Schaeffler 

(UK) Ltd. “We view these pupils as 

potential future engineers for our 

Llanelli plant or as future leaders 

of our business. So the time and 

resources that we commit every year 

will reap their rewards in the long 

term.” 

Established in 1955, the Schaeffler 

plant in Llanelli manufactures high 

precision engine components for 

the automotive market. The plant 

currently employs 250 people and 

is an autonomous subsidiary of 

the multi-national, German-owned 

Schaeffler Group. The plant employs 

seven engineering apprentices and 

one graduate trainee. Two of the 

apprentices work in the toolroom, 

the other five in maintenance and 

production. In 2011, four new 

apprentices were recruited. 

Schaeffler’s strong links with Coleg 

Sir Gar are vital in maintaining the 

plant’s pool of engineering talent, 

says Williams-Bevan. Coleg Sir Gar is 

one of the largest Further Education 

Colleges in Wales, with more than 

9,000 students enrolled on various 

courses ranging from Mechanical 

Engineering to Performing Arts. 

Adam Twells, Head of Engineering 

at Coleg Sir Gar comments: “The 

Engineering School at Coleg Sir Gar 

has around 200 full time students 

and 300 part time students. The 

courses we run include mechanical 

and electrical engineering, 

electronics, welding, maintenance 

and automotive engineering, from 

level 1 to Honours Degree. Our 

aim is to provide engineering 

courses and apprenticeship training 

that matches the needs of local 

businesses such as Schaeffler.” 

The working relationship between 

Schaeffler and Coleg Sir Gar is 

mutually beneficial. As well as 

offering work experience placements 

for Coleg Sir Gar engineering 

students, Schaeffler also supports 

many local engineering initiatives 

held at the college and organises 

its own ‘open days’ at the factory. 

In November 2011, for example, 

Schaeffler held a ‘See Inside 

Manufacturing’ open day, where 

more than 60 local school children 

visited the plant for a guided 

tour, presentations from senior 

management and an engineering 

challenge. 

Coleg Sir Gar supports Schaeffler 

and other local companies by 

offering relevant courses matched 

to their needs, as well as more 

specific, tailored training courses if 

required. 

Both Schaeffler and Coleg Sir Gar 

are also particularly keen to change 

the negative perceptions that many 

young people have of working in 

engineering. As Adam Twells puts it: 

“In other European countries such 

as Germany, engineering is well 

respected as a profession, but here 

it seems that engineering is deemed 

as not being a worthy career 

choice. But engineers work in highly 

technological areas, and so in my 

opinion, they should be comparable 

to say a doctor or a lawyer.” 

The key to changing these negative 

perceptions, says Adam Twells, is to 

target primary school children first. 

“That is where the misconceptions 

begin and where we can have the 

most influence.” 

He continues: “We are therefore 

working with local primary schools, 

in particular targeting 9 to 11 

year-olds and talking to them about 

what it is like to work in engineering. 

We are trying our best to educate 

parents, teachers and careers 

advisors, who may have negative 

views about working in engineering.” 

Schaeffler is also trying to influence 

the same age group. Recently, 

Schaeffler Llanelli organised an 

engineering challenge for 11-yearolds 

from Penyrheol Primary School 

in Llanelli. More than 30 pupils took 

part in the challenge, which was a 

variation of the Young Engineers’ Egg 

Challenge. The aim was to design 

and build a system that allowed 

the safe transportation of two eggs 

across chasms and cliff faces 

without damaging the eggs, using 

only limited items to create the 

mechanisms. 

The project took place over a 

number of weeks. The children were 

split into six groups and final entries 

were judged by a panel including 

Kate Hartigan, Managing Director 

at Schaeffler UK, Roger Evans, 

Plant Director, Adrian Roberts, HR 

Director, and a School Governor. 

In terms of learning, the school 

commented that the challenge 

“not only gave the pupils a greater 

understanding of mechanisms and 

mechanics”, but had also “helped 

the pupils grow their social skills too, 

by working together as a team and 

collectively towards a common goal”.

also attended the egg challenge 

commented: “The engineering 

project with Penyrheol school was 

a resounding success. The children 

modelled their innovative solutions 

and were able to discuss why they 

chose the designs they prototyped. 

They were also able to discuss 

how problems could be solved 

and the solutions improved. The 

learning undertaken was centred 

on mathematics, science and 

design technology, but through 

working on their projects they also 

improved their communication skills 

significantly, discussing their ideas 

with fellow pupils, teachers and with 

visiting adults.” 

“The project provided the pupils with 

a good insight into the way engineers 

work, which will hopefully open their 

minds to the educational and career 

opportunities available.” 

Influencing secondary 

school pupils 

Secondary schools are a key age 

group that needs influencing too. 

Adam Twells agrees: “Coleg Sir 

Gar holds regular engineering open 

days for secondary school pupils, 

as well as engineering challenges 

and competitions. However, in my 

experience, most 13-15 year olds 

tend to have already made up their 

minds about which career path 

they want to follow. This is why the 

college has started to focus more 

effort on the local primary school 

children.” 

Whilst Twells also concedes that not 

enough girls are being attracted into 

engineering, he points out that it is 

finding the right calibre of student 

that is more important here, not 

whether they are male or female. 

“The real problem we have here in 

Camarthenshire, and elsewhere 

in the UK too, is how to attract 

more higher calibre students into 

engineering. Those that are enrolling 

on our engineering courses here are 

generally those who have struggled 

to attain five GCSEs. To put it 

bluntly, it seems that the brighter 

students are going elsewhere and 

not into engineering.” 

Engineering Week Wales 

One event that has been hugely 

successful in changing Year 9 

pupils’ negative perception of 

engineering is Engineering Week 

Wales (EWW). 

Established in 2005 by 

CollegesWales, EWW is a result 

of further education colleges’ 

enthusiasm to demonstrate the 

excellent career opportunities that 

engineering provides the highest 

achievers. Every year in November, 

EWW gives Year 9 pupils (13-14 

year olds) hands-on engineering 

experiences at further education 

colleges across Wales. Both boys 

and girls are encouraged to take 

part, with some centres organising 

girl-only days. Each centre also 

hosts an engineering design 

challenge. More than 1,000 pupils 

each year take part in the activities, 

which range from aeronautics 

and automotive, to electronics, 

manufacturing and mechanical 

engineering. Key supporters of EWW 

include the Sector Skills Council 

(SEMTA), Engineering UK, City & 

Guilds and Careers Wales. 

Coleg Sir Gar and Schaeffler are 

both keen supporters of EWW. 

In November 2011, Coleg Sir 

Gar, supported by engineering 

apprentices from Schaeffler Llanelli, 

held its annual EWW Hovercraft 

Challenge for local schools. The 

challenge this year was to design 

and build a hovercraft and then race 

these. 

As Twells states: “Almost every 

local secondary school took part 

in 2011 with more than 80 pupils 

attending. The aim of the challenge 

is to try to influence the pupils just 

before they take their GCSE options 

and in this respect, the event was a 

resounding success.”

surfaces sustained no damage 

after a full year of salt water rinsing, 

which included the use of aggressive 

cleaning chemicals and high-pressure 

cleaners. Salt spray tests showed no 

corrosion after 1,000 hours. 

The NSD tupH surfaces also 

proved superior compared with 

standard systems during chip 

resistance testing: all gear units 

featuring protective coatings or 

varnishes, even nickel, or nickel/ 

teflon combinations, are susceptible 

to peel off and scratching due to 

general wear and tear but NSD tupH 

gear unit surfaces are scratch-proof, 

very resistant to impacts and do not 

corrode. 

Unlike stainless steel models, which 

most manufacturers provide for only 

a few drive types, the NSD tupH 

treatment is available for a very 

wide range of products – users can 

choose from virtually all aluminium 

gear units. The weight factor is 

another advantage: since aluminium 

as a basic material is considerably 

lighter than steel, this solution 

has substantially less mass and 

thus provides better installation 

options for mobile machinery and 

other weight sensitive applications.

it was viewed by HRH the Duke

apprentices Mark Thompson and

Brammer is a long-standing partner 

to Nestlé, supplying an extensive 

range of MRO products to the 

company’s York manufacturing 

operation through an Insite facility 

– effectively a Brammer branch on 

without the need for additional drive

Although recently introduced to 

the UK, the Compacta AG160 has 

already proven its ability on mainland 

Europe. A typical application is its 

use as a hinged cover drive for 

machines that automatically mix and 

marinate meat products. 

Known as ‘tumblers’, these 

machines have a computercontrolled 

20 second load system.

has developed a new range 

of progressive divider valves, 

launching later this year. 

The valves complete the 

company’s range of revolutionary 

products developed to reduce 

downtime and increase efficiency 

in the heavy industrial sector. 

The heavy-duty products - HDI 

centralised greasing pumps, 

electric keg pump system and 

SPL progressive divider valves 

- have been produced for the 

most arduous, aggressive and 

demanding industrial applications. 

Designed by experienced 

lubrication engineers who really 

know the market, the products 

are manufactured in the UK at 

Interlube’s Plymouth factory and 

exported throughout the world. 

The new valves - developed 

following a £400,000 investment 

in new machinery at the company’s 

Plymouth factory which has 

recently been awarded ISO 14001 

accreditation - are built to deliver 

accurate amounts of lubricant 

to each connected point without 

missing a grease point out. 

The SPL valves are tested to an 

excess of 350 Bar (5075 PSI) 

pressure to ensure that there is no 

‘skipping’ of the internal spools, 

which is paramount to the quality 

of the product. 

Interlube Sales Director Keith 

Horner says: “Some lubrication 

companies manufacture to cost 

and, of course, some customers 

buy to cost. But we look at the 

bigger picture - our investment 

in plant shows our commitment 

to quality .Our customers invest 

heavily in machines, so - naturally

The firm’s HDI pumps ensure that 

lubrication is consistently and 

efficiently delivered to the SPL 

valves which deliver set amounts 

of lubricant in turn to each 

connected bearing/pin. 

Suitable for most types of grease 

including greases to NGLI 2 

viscosity, the units generate more 

than 400 bar pressure if required, 

adequate to overcome resistance 

caused by tight bearings. 

Unlike some on the market, 

all pumps within the HDI range 

are easily installed and can be 

serviced cost effectively. 

Well tried and tested in all types of 

hostile environments, HDI pumps 

have been installed in locations 

throughout the world to serve many 

applications – such as the CAT 

family of mobile plant and handling 

machines. 

Interlube’s unique electric keg 

pump system is already showing 

huge savings in work time and 

running costs. 

The automatic system provides 

continuous, controlled lubrication 

to all moving parts whilst the 

plant is still in operation, giving 

adequate and even lubrication all 

the time, something that cannot be 

maintained if the machine has to 

be ‘parked up’ for servicing. 

Long-term benefits include a 

radical reduction in worn and 

damaged parts caused by erratic 

and irregular lubrication and the 

elimination of plant downtime for 

lubrication replacement. 

Installed at many open cast 

coalmines throughout Europe, 

the system has no reservoir re-fill 

requirement, only a grease keg 

which needs changing periodically. 

With large plant often needing 

grease reservoirs to be refilled 

every 3 days, using the Interlube 

system means the grease keg 

only needs replacing every 7 to 

10 days, and – crucially - the 

changeover can be done at the 

working site location without 

interruption to the plant lubrication 

facility. 

One satisfied customer has 

installed 14 units on site and is 

reporting large savings, both in 

costs and downtime.

Drives have major role 

in RSC Automation 

The four-year, £112 million 

transformation of the Royal 

Shakespeare Theatre in Stratfordupon-Avon 

has included a major 

project to automate the movements 

of back-drops and scenery as well 

as the complex system of lighting 

arrays. At the heart of the project, 

designed and installed by Dutch 

theatre automation company 

Trekwerk, there are around 100 

AC drives and servo motors from 

Control Techniques. The contract 

was awarded by Trekwerk to Control 

Techniques’ Rotterdam Drive Centre. 

Trekwerk was responsible for 

the renovation of the overstage 

installation, including the 

development, design, manufacture 

and installation of 60 winches plus 

hoists for 30 light arrays. Trekwerk 

has used Control Techniques’ 

drives exclusively for many years 

in mechanised rigging systems 

for theatres across Europe. They 

have also developed and refined 

their TNM control system and the 

advanced ‘SynchroDisk’ winch 

systems used at the RSC, which 

provide virtually silent operation. 

The original theatre featured a 

proscenium-arch stage and a 

seating capacity of about 1,400 

people. The renovated theatre 

now has a 1040 seat thrust stage 

auditorium that brings actors and 

audiences closer together, with 

the distance of the furthest seat 

from the stage being reduced from 

27m to just 15m. The experience 

is much closer to how it would have 

been when Shakespeare’s plays 

were first produced – but with stage 

remodelling and lighting effects 

that can only be achieved with the 

cutting-edge electronics offered by 

Trekwerk and Control Techniques. 

Often different productions are 

performed in the matinee and the 

evening and the RSC has just two 

hours to complete the changeover. 

With the new automation system 

in place, this is now achieved with 

ease! 

“The winch system is very advanced 

and gives us much greater flexibility 

in set design and operation,” says 

RSC’s Head of Automation Adam 

Harvey. “Safety is paramount, of 

course, and this is inherent in the 

whole project. It is very important 

to maintain the theatrical illusion 

and the reliability of the many 

winches involved in each production 

is crucial. We haven’t had a single 

drive fail which is a great result.” 

All of the winches are fitted with 

Control Techniques 15kW Unidrive 

SP AC drives operating in servo 

mode and twinned with Unimotor 

190 fm servo motors fitted with 

double encoders for precise 

positioning and speed control. 

A total of 46 drives are fitted to 

60 winches with at least half of 

these being positioned above the 

thrust stage. Any of these can 

be configured for different duties 

from lifting of scenery to controlling 

the ‘flying’ of actors. Sixteen of 

these winches are positioned 

in the ‘slot area’ specifically for 

stage reconfiguring and 14 unique 

Trekwerk SynchroDisc winches give 

silent five-line lifting of ‘flybars’ for 

rapid changeover of scenery during 

productions. 

Each winch drive is fitted with an 

SM-Applications Plus module that 

is programmed to control all of 

the winch motions, with the load 

being calculated internally, based 

on the current being drawn by the 

motor and checked against a load 

cell signal for additional safety. 

Each motor is fitted with both an 

incremental encoder for speed 

control and a Sin/Cos absolute 

encoder for position feedback. All 

winches are capable of lifting at 2 

m/s. Sixty of the winches are of a 

unique design called SynchroTwin. 

This allows one drive to control two 

2 m circumference winch cable 

drums either independently or 

synchronised together. This versatile 

arrangement saves valuable space 

in the busy, over-crowded plant area 

above the stage. 

The SynchroDisc theatre winch 

design is extremely compact, 

being just 395mm wide, with 

lifting capacities of up to 400kg 

in total. The winches can be fitted 

with two identical drums with 

6-mm steel wire rope (SWR) (i.e. 

200 kg lift per rope), or one drum 

with 8 mm SWR for lifting up to 

24 m. With permanent magnet 

servo motors and high frequency 

18 kHz switching, no braking noise 

and damped magnetic braking, 

the devices are virtually silent in 

operation, even when lifting at 1.8 

m/s. 

Thirty light clusters are controlled by 

1.5 kW Unidrive SP drives and size 

115 Unimotor fm servo motors with 

double-brakes. This facilitates the 

flying of lights in and out at a speed 

of 1 m/s, using the ‘Light-Lock’ antiswing 

device, patented by RSC’s 

head of lighting, Vince Herbert. The 

movement of individual lights can be 

synchronised with the movement of 

the cluster, each of which has fourcable 

lifting on two drums. 

A single DC bus fed by two rectifiers 

feeds all drives. During braking, 

recovered energy is recycled via 

the drives to the DC bus, producing 

some energy-savings. 

All drives that communicate 

with each other using Control 

Techniques’ own high-speed network 

CT Net, also communicate via 

CT Net with the Trekwerk control 

system. Three TNM control desks 

are pre-programmed with all critical 

movements for each performance 

and over-ride joy-stick control can 

be used to provide manual speed 

up / slow down control to maintain 

synchronicity. The TNM control 

system executes instructions to 

the drives. With the detailed motor 

movements being programmed 

within the SM-Applications 

Plus module in each drive. All 

programmed movements can be 

reviewed in the 3D graphics within 

the control system to flag up any 

potential problems, eliminating any 

chance of collisions. 

The Unidrive SP ‘Solutions Platform’ 

AC variable speed drive range spans 

0.37 kW right up to 1.9 MW. It 

is configurable into five operating 

modes – open loop, RFC (rotor flux 

control), closed loop vector, servo & 

regenerating modes. With a range of 

plug-in option modules, its onboard 

PLC can be supplemented with 

programmable, specialist feedback 

and communication modules. 

The SM-Applications Plus module 

transforms the Unidrive SP drive into 

a powerful automation controller 

that adds PLC functionality and can 

connect to the CT Net drive-to-drive 

network. This gives all the benefits 

of a fully distributed control system 

including better performance, 

reduced cost and smaller electrical 

panel sizes. 

Unimotor fm has seven frame 

sizes from 55 mm through to 

250 mm and ranges from 0.72 

Nm up to a massive 136 Nm. 

With IP65 protection, a wide 

range of shaft variants and flange 

dimensions including IEC and Nema 

configurations, a choice of feedback 

options and other options; the fm 

range is probably the most flexible in 

the market. 

Trekwerk, established in 2000, 

has worked closely with Control 

Techniques Netherlands to develop 

unique lifting and control systems 

for theatres. Around 30 TNM control 

systems and over 1,000 SynchroDisk 

winch systems have been installed 

in The Netherlands alone. The TNM 

System is also a favourite installation 

in other countries.

Festo launch low-cost pneumatic valve 

terminals and digital I/O modules 

Festo has launched a series of 

low-cost modular pneumatic valves, 

together with a complementary series 

of low-cost digital I/O modules, for its 

successful CPX automation platform. 

These latest additions further extend 

the platform’s suitability for diverse 

automation control applications, 

bringing a new level of system 

configuration flexibility to OEMs 

and machine builders. The new 

MPA-L valve terminals feature subbases 

manufactured from polymer 

instead of metal to save cost and 

weight, and can be configured – 

and retrofitted in the field – one 

valve at a time. The terminals are 

intended primarily for cost-sensitive

number of valve sub-bases are 

simply clamped together between 

two aluminium end-plates, and 

secured by three tie rods of the 

appropriate length. This arrangement 

results in a very robust and stable 

terminal, needs no special tools for 

assembly, and can be expanded at 

any time – up to 32 valve modules 

can be accommodated in a single 

block. The complete terminal can be 

mounted on a DIN rail, but this is not 

mandatory; wall and panel mount

external outlet, allowing the terminal 

to be located in a clean environment 

such as a food processing area.

On stand E19 at IWEX 2012, Atlas 

Copco Compressors exhibitied a 

wide array of energy efficient blower 

technologies for the water and effluent 

treatment industry, including the latest 

additions to the company’s ZS range 

of oil-free, positive displacement screw 

blowers. 

Also, and of special interest to waste 

water plant operators, will be Atlas 

Copco’s expanded low pressure 

blower range which is the result of the
