22 P&TR May/June 2012 Powerful and versatile industrial gear units SEW Eurodrive’s standard and bespoke industrial gearboxes are described by the company as both powerful and versatile. The heavy-duty X series range of helical and bevel helical units offers a choice of 23 finely graduated sizes, with torque ratings from 6.8 to 475kNm. This means that engineers can select a gearbox that is exactly right for their application, rather than having to specify one that’s too big because their requirement falls in the middle of two size options. Additionally, this ability to make an optimal selection for every task enables engineers to not only cut cost but reduce weight as well. Designed around a modular concept, with the availability of predefined accessories, the units are infinitely flexible and adaptable to suit a wide range of different applications. The reversible gear unit housing of the X series units allows for variable installations with a single version. This means there is a reduced number of variants for both operators and original equipment manufacturers alike. Other key features of the X series includes, operational safety, ease of maintenance, extremely robust gear unit housings, low noise operation and efficient cooling systems. SEW Eurodrive’s IG (Industrial Gearbox) range also includes the MC, ML and MD series of helical and bevel helical units with a torque capacity of up to 2,584kNm. The MC series offers compact units designed for applications where the space envelope is limited and with lower torque requirements up to 65kNm. The ML series is for customer-specific applications and tailor-made solutions for large machines and systems with torque up to 680kNm. The range also includes the P and XP series of planetary gearboxes with a torque range of 24kNm – 6,000kNm. The company is well known for its short delivery times on standard items and spare parts, and in line with this philosophy there is a design and manufacturing plant dedicated to industrial gears so that even large, bespoke units can be designed and manufactured quickly. Applications include use on agitators and mixers, conveying systems, bucket elevators, shredders and disintegrators, travel drives for cranes, crushers, grinders, toaster drives, and paper machine drives. The largest industrial gearboxes the company has manufactured were truly colossal units weighing in at over 50 tonnes. All SEW Eurodrive’s industrial gearboxes are ATEX approved and its X series range is certified to ATEX M2 for underground, mining applications. Visitors to igus had the opportunity of meeting the polymer experts to learn how to optimise processes and reduce costs through innovative use of plastic components. Available in five standard igus materials, the xiros range of bearings is ideal for a variety of applications, ranging from medical equipment, pumps and measurement machines, through to transport and conveying technology – particularly in the industrial sectors of chemicals, food, laboratory equipment and packaging. Lubricant and maintenance-free, xiros polymer ball bearings can endure temperatures of up to +150°C, are highly corrosionresistant, can be washed and cleaned, are non-magnetic and are light weight. The plastic ball bearings have excellent friction coefficients to give high performance and long service life, even in the most demanding of applications. As a result, users can make overall cost savings compared to conventional metal ball bearings. Also on show was a range of the company’s energy chains, including the fully-enclosed RX energy tubes. The igus RX range features smooth, domed outer contours for maximum … all’s well… that ends well! Last Issue(Issue 47), we reported; ‘Boxers bid farewell’ one of many major charity events organised, yet again by Russ Arrowsmith of Arrow Engineering Components Limited. The money raised from that farewell, white collar boxing event at the Willows, gained £14,800. The final cheque was presented to Salford City Red’s and Salford Lad’s Club. protection against debris and chips accumulation, as well as dust, dirt, oil, high humidity levels and temperature extremes. The RX e-tube is particularly wellsuited to short, self-supporting lengths such as those found inside machine tools. They can be delivered directly to the machine as ready-to-fit units, known as readychains, assembled to size and fitted with cables and hoses, suitable connectors and even including a new guide rail, which enables users to reduce assembly times and storage costs. A complete modular system, the igus robolink range of lightweight, maintenance and corrosion-free connection joints for humanoid systems will also be on display. Suitable for use in areas of general lightweight construction, handling, automation and camera applications, robolink can be configured and expanded to many designs and saves cost because there is no need for expensive milling, cutting or intricate assembly work. The system is driven by wires and four or five degree of freedom systems can easily be constructed by connecting joints together. The systems can even be supplied with NEMA 17 or 23 stepper motors in a housing unit.
