houses a restaurant. d Havelchaussee
Onkel-Tom-Siedlung
The “Uncle Tom’s Hut” settlement,
developed in 1926–32
according to designs by Bruno
Taut and others, was intended to
create a modern housing estate
for workers, unlike their old narrow,
dark tenement blocks.
d Argentinische Allee
Free University
The campus of Berlin’s largest
university, founded in 1948 as a
rival to East-Berlin Humboldt
University, covers large parts of
Dahlem. It is worth looking at
the 1950s Henry-Ford-Bau and
the so-called Rostlaube (rusting
hut), at present being redesigned
by Sir Norman Foster. d Garystr.
Teufelsberg
Both the hill and the lake,
the dark green Teufelssee, are
popular destinations for a day
out at the weekend, for flying
kites, biking and sunbathing.
St-Peter-und-Paul-Kirche
This charming stone church,
built in 1834–7 by F A Stüler,
resembles Russian-Orthodox
churches. It is a popular venue
for marriage ceremonies.
The German playwright Kleist
The 14th-century Gothic
church. Attractive murals depict
scenes from the life of Saint
late-Gothic figures of saints and
a Baroque pulpit. d Königin-Luise-
