The View from the Boardroom - CEO Study on Corporate Social Responsibility in Trinidad and TobagoMethodologyThe CEO report on Corporate Social Responsibility in Trinidad and Tobago wasconducted over a six month period between April and September 2011. The targetsample included 50 CEOs with questionnaires and interview requests sent out toa total of 142 companies. This meant that in order to achieve the target sample,over-sampling of more than 100% was necessary. A total of 53 CEOs participatedin the survey and interviews. ChemicalsThe participating companies were chosen from among both Small and MediumEnterprises (SMEs) as well as from the group of larger national and multinationalcompanies. Despite its predominant focus on private companies, four CEOsrepresented companies that are either wholly or partially owned by the state. Thisdecision was made in recognition of their importance for the national economy.The study used the categorisation of the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Labourand Small and Micro Enterprises (MLSME) to determine company size. This localtemplate was chosen in order to reflect the specific structure of the local PrivateSector which, based on total numbers of employees, is dominated by SMEs.14

This questionnaire included a sections regardingcompany data, and dealt with a broad range of sustainabilityaspects such as charitable giving, CSR and human resourcemanagement, drivers for CSR and corporate volunteering toname but a few.Based on the classification of the MLSME, 62.9% of allCEOs participating in the survey led companies in the ‘large’segment followed by 22.9% of small companies and 14.3% ofmedium size companies.
