capitalareafoodbankAnnual ReportFiscal Year 2007-2008July 1, 2007-June 30, 2008

2a letter toour friendsThis year, our nation is facing tremendous economicchallenges. People have been hit with job losses, decreasinghome values, foreclosures, dwindling retirement accountsand increased food and utility costs—all of which requiretightening of household budgets. In our experience, whenbudgets get tighter, the food allotment is the most flexibleand often gets reduced the most; and that results in increaseddemand on the food bank and our 700 partner agencies. Our partner agencies have reported seeing increases from 30to over 100 percent. They report having longer lines and seeingnew faces. They are decreasing portions and running out offood faster than ever before. People who once donated are nowin need. This is why the services that the Capital Area FoodBank provides are so important and why your support makesa significant difference. Our financial, food, and in-kind donors, as well as volunteers, provide critical resources that help the food bank continue itsoperation and for that, we are grateful. You have continuedto support us through this tumultuous time, many evenincreasing their commitments. In the 2007-2008 fiscal year, the food bank distributed over 23million pounds of food into the Washington, D.C. MetropolitanDue to the state of the economy, agencies are reporting increases in theneed for food as high as 200 percent.Area. However, we recognize that addressing hunger requiresmuch more than providing food; and we have continued todevelop new ways of outreach. The CAFB strives to createaccess to fresh produce in underserved areas; to educate thecommunity about nutrition and health; and to advocate onbehalf of those in need. We are fielding a hunger study withFeeding America and Mathematic Policy Institute to betterunderstand hunger. We are continuing to implement programsin these areas that will help us empower the community.Last year, the USDA increased federal poverty levels, so for afamily of four, the annual household income is $22,050 to beconsidered “in poverty” and receive federal funding for variousprograms. The Wider Opportunities for Women’s report onSelf Sufficiency found that a family of four living in D.C. wouldneed $60,339 a year in household income to meet just basicneeds; in Montgomery County, $69,636; in Prince George’sCounty, $56,463; in Alexandria, $66,153; and in Fairfax County,$71,833. The gaps between what the government defines as

poor and what a family needs to earn for basic needs isenormous, leaving those whose incomes fall in betweenwith few options to meet basic needs. There is much morework to be done.As we look to the new administration for solutions to theeconomic crisis, we must not stop working for those lessfortunate. We must continue to donate food, donate funds, write letters, volunteer, continue the online discussions andhelp where needed. We appreciate your unwavering supportand look forward to working beside you in the future.insideAbout Us...................................... 4Special Events............................. 5Our Donors...............................6-9Til No One is Hungry............ 10-11Food Drive Donors.................... 12In-Kind Donors.......................... 13Agency Partners..................16-19Fresh Produce Sites.................. 193Brown Bag Sites........................ 19Programs.............................20-21Financial Statement.............22-23How You Can Help..................... 24Lynn J. 10‘til no oneis hungryWhen the food bank’s leaders began the ’Til No OneIs Hungry capital campaign in order to build a new,state-of-the-art distribution facility, we took on oneof the most ambitious goals in the organization’s history. Weembraced the challenge because we knew that a larger foodbank would enable us to distribute millions more pounds ofdesperately needed food to our community. We also knewthat we could do more to address the root causes of hungerby expanding our education programs and increasing thecapacities of our 700 partner agencies. With the economy pushing more working and middle-classpeople to the brink of hunger, the imperative to increasethe food bank’s capacity has never been greater. As moreindividuals lose their jobs and food prices continue toincrease, our partner agencies are calling on us to help themserve those who can no longer afford to feed themselves andtheir families.our partner agencies; rooms for education, outreach, andadvocacy programs; more places to utilize our 12,000 annualvolunteers; and warehouse space that will allow us to bothaccept food that we must currently turn away and creativelymanage new sources of food.We are moving full speed ahead with fundraising and projectplanning in order to achieve our vision as quickly as possible. In October 2008, we held a groundbreaking ceremony at thesite of the new food bank and anticipated that constructionwould be complete in 2009. However, in the months followinggroundbreaking, it has become clear that our project, likeso many others across the country, will not be untouchedby the detrimental impact of the financial and real estatemarket crises. In order to exercise prudence with our donors’investments during this time of economic instability, wehave temporarily delayed construction as we ensure that allnecessary financing for the project is secure and in place. Our vision remains crystal clear: with the community’ssupport, we will help more people find their own pathsaway from hunger, and towards stability and hope. Weare committed to constructing a food distribution centerwith expanded “shopping” areas and other resources forCampaign co-chairs Donald E. Graham, J.W. Marriott, Jr.,Abe Polllin, and Bennett Zier, along with all of our many otherdonors and friends, have proven to us that even in uncertaintimes, this region will stand by the essential mission of thefood bank. We are deeply grateful to have your support, and

emain confident in the power of our community to bringhope and nourishment to those who, now more than ever, need our help. 20FY 2007-2008programsAgency Relations is the front door of the Capital AreaFood Bank. The CAFB partners with 700 agencies eachyear by engaging them in initiatives that reach clients withfood, nutrition education, advocacy and outreach. Agencymembership provides area nonprofit organizations such asemergency food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and seniorand youth centers, with access to donated and low-cost purchasedfood and for use in their distribution programs. Theseagencies are the first responders when families and individualsare facing a food crisis.Feeding HopeIn addition to the millions of pounds of food distributedthrough partner agencies, 7 million pounds of fresh producereaches those in need each year. Partner agencies pick uplocal, sustainably grown produce from Clagett farm. Morethan 1,600 children are fed healthy meals and snacks thatinclude fresh produce in afterschool programs daily. Freshproduce also makes its way into underserved communitiesthrough more than 80 Fresh Produce Distributions eachmonth throughout the region.
