Introduction:1) Begin the activity by asking students, “What animal do you think the giant panda isclosely related to?” Then ask them about red pandas. Have them give reasons for theiranswers. Have students discuss the reasons why some scientists believed giant pandaswere more closely related to raccoons but now believe they are related to bears.2) Pass out the worksheets to the students. Have them make comparisons and complete theworksheets.3) Have students research both the giant panda and red panda to elaborate their answers onthe worksheets.Extensions/Going Further:1) Have students research the horseshoe crab. The horseshoe crab is actually more closely related toscorpions than it is to crabs. Have them research this relationship.2) Have students pick an animal and scientifically classify them.26
