24Fifth RochaAwardfor <strong>CSIR</strong><strong>CSIR</strong>researcherto representSouth Africaon IUGGDr Lindsay Linzer, senior researcherat <strong>CSIR</strong> Mining Technology, hasbeen appointed as the South Africanrepresentative on the InternationalUnion of Geodesy and Geophysics(IUGG). Linzer was the recipient ofthe prestigious Rocha Medal in2003 and was presented with the<strong>CSIR</strong> Research Excellence awardin the same year.Established in 1919, the IUGG is aninternational, non-governmental,non-profit scientific organisationwith the objective to promote andcoordinate studies of physical,chemical and mathematicalproperties of the Earth and itsenvironment in space.
