group reports & publicationsexperimental particle physics (EPP)Several of the students are now involved in thedevelopment of the next generation pixel detectorfor synchrotron application. The intention is toultimately refine the technology to the point whereit can be used in medical application. Much of thiswork is being done in collaboration with ChristianBroenniman (DECTRIS), Graeme O’Keefe (AustinPET Centre) and the CRC for Biomedical imaging. With an energy resolving detector, it will be possibleto obtain energy specific xray images in clinicalenvironments, and ultimately pave the way for tissuespecific imaging of the human body.Complementing this program is the acceleratorresearch being undertaken in conjunction with MarkBoland and the accelerator physics group at theAustralian Synchrotron Light Source (ASLS). Herethe group’s focus is directed towards an improvedunderstanding of the beam dynamics of the highenergy electron beam at the facility. Building uponthe expertise gained during commissioning of thefacility, the group is now developing a dynamicfeedback system for compensate for beaminstabilities. As the facility grows, there will be moredemands insertion devices. Meeting this demandwill only be possible with real-time, turn-by-turncontrol of the circulating electrons. The researchbeing undertaken by the students in the PhDprogram will be critical for the future growth of thefacility. This year has been a busy one, with two PhDsand one MSc completion. We are pleased tocongratulate Bryn Sobott, Viliami Takau and GarethJones on the completion and submission of theirtheses. All three are actively employed, Gareth at theAustin hospital PET centre, Viliami at the ASLS andBryn as a postdoc within the CRC-BID.Publications:Artuso M, Barberio L & Stone S. 2009. B mesondecays.
