group reports & publicationsmicro-analytical research centre (MARC)The diamond group receives considerable nationaland international recognition for its work ondevelopment of optical centres in diamond forpotential applications in quantum computing andfor its work in engineering of diamond structures.In 2009, a particular highlight was the recognitionof the group’s work in discovering a new ultrabrightsingle photon source in diamond based on Cr. Thework was published in the high impact journal NanoLetters: Aharonovich, I., Castalletto, S., Simpson,D. A., Stacey, A., McCallum, J., Greentree, A.D., and Prawer, S., Two-Level Ultrabright SinglePhoton Emission from Diamond Nanocrystals, NanoLetters, 9, 3191-5, (2009). The group’s work onMeV and focused ion beam processing of diamondto form free-standing membranes, waveguide,photonic and cavity structures has lead to stronginternational and industry linkages in this importantarea of development for future quantum optical andengineering applications of diamond. The group’srecognized expertise in engineering of diamondstructures was also instrumental in it being part ofthe consortium that secured $42M funding fromthe Australian government to develop the bioniceye. The diamond group’s task is to engineer anelectrically-conductive diamond electrode arraywhich will interface to the optic nerve. They havealready made considerable progress toward thedevelopment of these structures.In addition to the bionic project funding, MARCgroup members were successful in attractingresearch funding from a number of sourcesfor research programs commencing in 2010.One particular highlight has been the EducationInfrastructure Fund/Superscience Heavy IonAccelerator Project which is jointly fundedbetween ANU and University of Melbourne andwill provide $1.3M over the next three years todevelop equipment and resources for the Pelletronlaboratory. This is a great funding boost for this partof our core infrastructure. The end of 2010 marks theend of the funding cycle for CQCT and during 2010a new centre bid which expands on the activitiesof the Centre will be formulated.
