Depending on the plasticused, the UV-B part of the wavelength of320 nm induces a more or less strongmolecular decomposition that is responsible<strong>for</strong> a considerable restriction of the plastic'smechanical property profile. even theproperties of imprints and labels cansustain damage to a greater or lesserextent due to this UV radiation. The properties ofthe plastic and the legibility of the imprintsand labels are checked after the test.If plastics and their imprints and labelsare often subjected to day/night cyclesoutdoors, condensation may appearon the surface in the <strong>for</strong>m of waterdroplets, which can act in a similarway to magnifying glasses when thesunshine returns, thus intensifying theradiation effect. DIN EN 61010-1Labels and imprints must be resistant tothe standard cleaning agents used in theindustry. There<strong>for</strong>e, at <strong>Phoenix</strong> <strong>Contact</strong>,labels and imprints are rubbed using a softcloth with water, isopropanol, petroleumether, and n-hexane. The labels andimprints must still be legible after the test.<strong>Phoenix</strong> <strong>Contact</strong> marking materials meetstringent requirements with regard toabrasion and wipe resistance and can thusbe used in all applications.Abrasion and wipe resistanceDIN EN ISO 1518Scratch resistanceLabels and imprints must also be resistantto external, point and/or linear mechanicalloads. For this reason, <strong>Phoenix</strong> <strong>Contact</strong>tests all labels and imprints <strong>for</strong> scratchresistance in accordance with thea<strong>for</strong>ementioned standard. The test iscarried out by applying a scratching toolwith a hemispherical tip (Ø 1 mm) to thetest objects. Depending on the printingprocedure, a <strong>for</strong>ce of between2 N and 6 N is applied. Adhesive strength testbased on FINAT test method No. 2The purpose of this test is to comparethe adhesive strength of labels on variousbasic materials. To this end, a strip oflabels (25 mm x 175 mm) is applied to therespective basic material with a specified<strong>for</strong>ce. After a defined storage period, thestrip is removed from the basic materialat an angle of 90° and with a speed of300 mm/min. The adhesive strength isspecified in N/25 mm.
