BY DUNCAN NIXON CORRESPONDENT The Fluvanna Flying Flucos boys basketball team won a second consecutive Region II, Division 3 title Saturday (Feb. 25) by scoring an impressive 64-57 win over a talented John Handley High team from Winchester. The Flucos are now 23-3 and go to the state tournament on this coming weekend (March 2 or 3) were they will play James Monroe High from Fredericksburg. The Flucos were led in this victory as they have been all season, by senior guard Ya Ya Anderson who scored 31 points, and recorded six rebounds and eight assists. Freshman guard Vinnie Agee had 16 points and six rebounds, while senior post player Taylor Lintecum had 10 points and fi ve rebounds. Handley, a team that handed the Flucos one of their three losses to date, fi elded a squad with impressive front court size and a couple of sharp shooting gunners in the back court. The Judges of Handley were 18-5 on the year, and they opened the game in a confi dent fashion. Utilizing their size on the inside, and their three point shooting on the outside, the Judges ran off to a 13-4 lead midway through the 10 | FLUVANNA REVIEW | March 1, 2012 opening quarter. It did not look good for the Flucos. However, the Flucos were not giving up that early. They strung together three baskets: a rebound put back by Agee, a lay-up by Lintecum on an Anderson feed, and a nice driving lay-in by Anderson, to get back in the game. The quarter ended with Handley up 17-13. The Flucos opened the second quarter strong. Anderson had a tip in and a spectacular drive, and one, for a three point play. The Flucos took the lead 21-20 on two free throws by Lintecum. The Judges responded late in the quarter with back to back three pointers, and the Flucos were down by four at the break 32-28. Anderson had eight in quarter and 16 in the half. Coach Munro Rateau advised after the game that his half time message to his team was simply “keep your composure and play our game.” The message was effective. The Flucos came out strong in the third quarter. They moved the ball crisply for open shots and their aggressive team defense shut down the Judges. Vinnie Agee led the way with nine in the quarter including two key three pointers. The Flucos won the quarter 20-14 to take a 48-46 lead into the fi nal stanza. Handley opened the quarter with a basket to tie the game, but Anderson responded with three point basket, and the Flucos never trailed thereafter. Anderson and junior guard Brad Bullock both made impressive blocks on inside attempts by Handley big men, and senior post player Jake Smith hit a key turn around shot from the lane to put the Flucos up 55-50. The Judges were forced to foul late in the game and Anderson hit fi ve three throws, as time wound down, to secure the win. The Flucos reached the Region II Division 3 fi nals by winning their quarter fi nal game over Warren County High by a decisive 83-56 score (on Feb. 21), and by narrowly edging Charlottesville 47-46 in the semi-fi nal (on Feb. 23). The Charlottesville game was very similar to the win over Handley. The Flucos started slow and were down by four after the fi rst quarter. Charlottesville maintained and built its lead in the second quarter and the Flucos went to the locker room down 29-22. Anderson had 12 of the Flucos’ 22 and Bullock was the only other Fluco with more than one basket. He had four points at the half. The Flucos turned the game around in the third quarter, as Agee had eight, including two three pointers, and Anderson sank six free throws. The Flucos outscored the Black Knights by 10 in the quarter and took a 38-34 lead to the fi nal stanza. The Flucos defense was outstanding as it held Charlottesville to a mere fi ve points in the third quarter. Charlottesville opened the fourth quarter with six points to go up 40-38. Anderson responded with a powerful drive to the basket to tie it back up. Charlottesville immediately went back on top due to a three pointer. Anderson scored again and Agee put the Flucos back on top 44-43 with 3:45 left in the game. A rebound put back gave the Black Knights the lead again. Both teams played deliberately from that point on and neither team was making its free throws. With forty-six seconds left and Charlottesville leading 46-44, Anderson was fouled on a drive to the basket, and he went to the line with a chance to tie the game. He hit the fi rst, but missed the second. Anderson was not to be denied, however. He aggressively grabbed the rebound off his miss, and snaked in for a lay-up to put the Flucos on top. Despite the fact that they trailed by a point, the Black Knights held the ball for the last shot. A three point attempt for the corner was just long, and the Flucos were on to the fi nals, and into the state tournament.

March 6, 5 p.m. at Siegel Center (VCU) Tickets $10 In their quarter fi nal game, the Flucos faced the thoroughly outmatched, eighth seeded, Wildcats from Warren County. With Anderson scoring 12 in the fi rst quarter, the Flucos ran to a 23-13 lead after eight minutes. They boosted their lead to 21 at half time 42-21, and coasted to an 83-56 win. Coach Rateau was able to give his young bench players some valuable play-off experience in the fi nal stanza. Anderson had 26 in the game, while freshmen Vinnie Agee and Jalen Harrison had 16 and 11 respectively. Although Anderson obviously led the way through the regionals for the Flucos with 26, 25 and 31 points in the three games, Coach Rateau correctly emphasized after the win over Handley that the whole season has been a team effort. This team moves the ball well, fi nds the open man well, and defends extremely well. Rateau also lauded his entire team, including those who see little playing time, as they “push our starters hard every day in practice.” Finally, Rateau lauded the Fluco crowd. At the college level some small and raucous gyms became famous as the homes of elite teams that were simply unbeatable in front of their faithful. Those gyms are mostly gone now, replaced by larger more antiseptic facilities. If elite college teams were unbeatable in that type of facility, it stands to reason that elite high school teams like the Flucos would also be extra ordinarily hard to beat in such a place. The Flucos wish the Shoebox a fond farewell. All-region honors Ya Ya Anderson has been named the Division 3 Player of the Year in Region II. Coach Munro Rateau has been name Division 3 Coach of the Year in Region II.
