GIFFORD CORRESPONDENT Many at Lake Monticello will be affected by the Comcast Digital Migration known as Xfi nity. Simply put, Comcast is upgrading its network to include only those channels available as part of the Expanded Basic channel lineup. In others, they are upgrading both the Expanded Basic and Limited Basic channels to all digital. Many Lake residents have received letters in the mail explaining which applies to them. To participate in the upgrade, every customer would either have to have a Digital Set-Top Box or Digital Adapter. However, one problem has arisen at Lake Monticello that no one seemed prepared for – the local Lake Monticello channels would disappear. After speaking with two representatives and one technician, according to Comcast, the signal may only come through on those who have the HD cable boxes and receive channels 977 and 978, the equivalent of channels 10 and 14. Those wishing to keep access to broadcast HD channels, would have to receive the Limited Basic channels (including broadcast HD) without Comcast equipment. This would include those who care very little about what is on TV and who choose not to upgrade. The Digital Adapter does not support HD signals. The Expanded Basic channels or higher channel levels wouldn’t be accessible. According to a Comcast technician, Lake Monticello would have to upgrade their digital equipment. Co-chair of the Broadcast Committee, Jerry Steffel stated, “Our studio equipment is 12 -15 years old and is all analog, not digital. No one from Comcast has ever contacted us to say that we needed to change in any way. Comcast uses our Since 1992 We offer a wide range of veterinary services to keep your companions feeling their best! “Our studio equipment is 12 -15 years old and is all analog, not digital. I had a Comcast technical representative here last week, and he didn’t say anything about having to update our gear.” “We talked at length about this at our monthly meeting,” said co-chair Ron Krausse and host and one of the producers of This Week At The Lake. “It appears that the channels 10 and 14 we’ll be getting are Charlottesville’s 10 and 14, not ours.” Cliff Altschull, Board Treasurer, recently drove to the Comcast offi ce in Charlottesville since their phone number at the local offi ce had been disconnected for incoming calls. “My calls to their “800” number proved to be less than informative,” said Altschull. “The two customer service representatives on duty were very uninformed. However, they did tell me that every TV, whether old or new, would require a separate box to be able to receive any cable signal effective March 6, because on that date all of the signals would be scrambled. So if you go to Best Buy tomorrow and buy a brand new 2012 model TV you will still need a box attached to it to be able to receive a signal,” added Altschull. “Beyond that detail everything else they attempted to tell me was in one way or the other confusing. After one hour they fi nally said they would have a rep call me. I am still waiting for that call.” Altschull adds Comcast knew nothing about the LMOA local channels or what would happen to them on March 6. Altschull did follow up and is waiting to also hear back from Comcast technician that lives at the Lake. But now the entire matter has been turned over to the new general manager and the fate of the local channels will be determined by what Ms. Neelley fi nds out from Comcast. “The Best Care for Your Best Friends” Fork Union Animal Clinic Sam Babbitt, DVM DeNae Babbitt, DVM Kendra Philman, DVM Ashley Rethemeyer, DVM 434-842-8387 Mon.-Fri. 8:00am - 6:00pm Sat. 8:30am-12:00 noon Sun.Closed 6690 James Madison Hwy, Fork Union, VA forkunion@nvanet.com www.ForkUnionVets.com Services Laser Surgical Anesthesia / Pain Control Orthopedic Surgery Digital Radiology Advanced Dentistry Laboratory Microchipping Laser Therapy Ultrasound Dietary Counseling
