• Improving writing skills—Half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ameri<strong>Corps</strong> members <strong>and</strong> a little less than half <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> VISTAs received this. Few <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coordinators did, only 18%. The training came mostlyfrom an “o<strong>the</strong>r” source.• How to support children’s reading <strong>and</strong> promote family literacy—The majority <strong>of</strong>members received training in this area (87.5% for VISTA, 75% for Ameri<strong>Corps</strong>), as did56% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> key area coordinators. <strong>National</strong> service <strong>and</strong> “o<strong>the</strong>r” were <strong>the</strong> primary providers.• Management <strong>of</strong> volunteers—100% <strong>of</strong> VISTAs had received this training. Slightly morethan half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ameri<strong>Corps</strong> members <strong>and</strong> coordinators also had (56.3%). In most cases,national service had provided this training.Ameri<strong>Corps</strong> <strong>and</strong> VISTA InvolvementThe results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> key area coordinator survey suggest that Ameri<strong>Corps</strong> <strong>and</strong> VISTA membersgenerally play a leading role in <strong>the</strong> following areas:• Recruiting volunteers—Respondents said that <strong>the</strong>ir national service members wereextremely active in this area, showing a 100% involvement rate. Members ei<strong>the</strong>r take <strong>the</strong>lead here (62.5%) or are very involved (37.5%).• Providing partners/businesses materials or incentive for <strong>the</strong> program—This isano<strong>the</strong>r area where VISTA <strong>and</strong> Ameri<strong>Corps</strong> members are 100% engaged, with 43.8%taking <strong>the</strong> lead, 31.3% being very involved, <strong>and</strong> 18.8% involved.• Conducting community service projects such as book drives—Ano<strong>the</strong>r area <strong>of</strong> fullmember involvement, with 31.3% taking <strong>the</strong> lead, 43.8% very involved, <strong>and</strong> 25% involved.• Developing a plan for sustaining community involvement in <strong>the</strong> program—77.5% <strong>of</strong>members are working with sustainability in some way, with 25% taking <strong>the</strong> lead, 31.3%very involved, <strong>and</strong> 31.3% involved.• Organizing <strong>and</strong> promoting family literacy events—Members show 100% involvementin this area, with 37.5% taking <strong>the</strong> lead, 31.3% very involved, <strong>and</strong> 31.5 involved.• Recruiting parents as tutors—This was ano<strong>the</strong>r area where members are fully engaged.43.8% are taking <strong>the</strong> lead, 43.8% are very involved, <strong>and</strong> 12.5% are involved, for a 100%involvement rate.• Developing or preparing reading materials for students to read at home—Nearlythree-fourths <strong>of</strong> members are involved here, with 12.5% taking <strong>the</strong> lead, 43.8% veryinvolved, <strong>and</strong> 18.8% involved.59
