HISTORY OF THEUNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA UPSTATEThe history <strong>of</strong> USC <strong>Upstate</strong> is a chronicle <strong>of</strong> remarkabledevelopment. USC <strong>Upstate</strong> was established primarily to averta serious health care problem when Spartanburg GeneralHospital announced it was phasing out its diploma programfor registered nurses. A citizens’ committee investigated thesituation and ultimately requested that Spartanburg be includedin the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> system. The SpartanburgRegional Campus, as it was first known, opened its doors in thefall <strong>of</strong> 1967 to 177 students on the first floor <strong>of</strong> the SpartanburgGeneral Hospital nursing residence. Enrollment continued toincrease, which resulted in the school becoming a four-yearuniversity in 1975.Now in its 45th year, the <strong>University</strong> continues striving toward itsvision to become one <strong>of</strong> the <strong>South</strong>east’s leading “metropolitan”universities ... a university which acknowledges as its fundamentalreason for being its relationship to its surrounding cities, theirconnecting corridors and expanding populations. It aims to berecognized nationally among its peer metropolitan institutions forits excellence in education and commitment to its students, forits involvement in the <strong>Upstate</strong>, for its operational and managerialeffectiveness, for its civility and common purpose and for theclarity and integrity <strong>of</strong> its mission.The <strong>University</strong> was known as USC Spartanburg until July 1, 2004,when its name was changed to USC <strong>Upstate</strong> to better reflect itsfulfillment <strong>of</strong> a metropolitan mission.nursing and teacher education, and master’s degrees in education.Among the fastest growing universities in <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong>, USC<strong>Upstate</strong> is a diverse and dynamic community <strong>of</strong> 5,500 studentsfrom across the <strong>Upstate</strong>, 36 states and 51 countries.Today’s thriving campus, which includes 330 acres, newroadways, an athletic complex, residential housing for 1,000, anenrollment <strong>of</strong> 5,500 students, a minority enrollment exceeding30 percent and a Health Education Complex is much differentfrom its early, rather humble beginnings. USC <strong>Upstate</strong> hasa Greenville campus for commuting junior and senior levelstudents, which enrolls more than 1,000 students each year. TheGeorge Dean Johnson, Jr. College <strong>of</strong> Business and Economicsin downtown Spartanburg opened in <strong>May</strong> 2010 and is home tonearly 850 students.The USC <strong>Upstate</strong> Spartans now compete on the NCAADivision I level as a member <strong>of</strong> the Atlantic Sun Conference.The Spartans field 17 varsity sports – basketball, soccer, tennis,golf, cross country, and track and field for both women and men;baseball for men; and s<strong>of</strong>tball and volleyball for women.More than 20,500 students have earned their degrees from USC<strong>Upstate</strong> and are now representing the <strong>University</strong> as alumni.Nearly 85 percent <strong>of</strong> our alumni choose to remain in the <strong>Upstate</strong>to build their lives and careers, making a significant impact onthe region’s economy and quality <strong>of</strong> life.USC <strong>Upstate</strong> has experienced phenomenal growth in the past 45years. Today, USC <strong>Upstate</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers more than 40 bachelor’s degreeprograms in the liberal arts and sciences, business administration,The growth and accomplishments <strong>of</strong> this institution have beena direct response to the needs <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Upstate</strong> – a tradition thatbegan with the <strong>University</strong>’s creation.17
