From researchers developing newtechnology to students winning first place in an international competition, the journey toachieve that excellence did not happen overnight. Day by day and month by month, milestonesmark achievements. Collectively these achievements take our University to a higher level.Throughout this year’s Report on Philanthropy you will read of the achievements and milestonesfrom departments all across campus. These events would not be possible without the generosityof our donors who continually give to ensure our University is able to fund programs that allowour students to excel in their field of study.State-mandated budget cuts were a big story throughout 2009. Although there was uncertaintyover what the future would hold, a plan was put in place and adjustments were made. Weemerge in 2010 a leaner, stronger University. Our donors have the unique but powerful opportunity to change the lives of those not just inAcadiana or Louisiana, but all around the world. Every donation has a far reaching impactthat affects the lives of many individuals. Because of our donors, we can continue to fulfill thedreams of students and professors, each following their own individual journey to excellence, while collectively bringing the University to a higher level. With sincere gratitude, we thankyou for your generosity and support.

D R . E . J O S E P H S A V O I E , P R E S I D E N TUNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA LAFAYETTEB A R R Y B E R T H E L O T, P R E S I D E N TUL LAFAYETTE FOUNDATION 2009 – 2011After receiving solid state funding for several years, colleges and universities were directed to cuttheir budgets in fiscal year 2008–’09. The reductions challenged the University of Louisiana atLafayette to reexamine its priorities. That reassessment sharpened our focus even more. We remainsteadfast in our belief that we must, above all, protect our core academic mission and continue toprovide quality educational opportunities for our students. Each year seems to bring new challenges, opportunities and rewards. Accordingly, our capacityas individuals and the institutions that we associate with must continue to grow, if we areto fulfill our obligations. The UL Lafayette Foundation Board of Trustees and its staff arededicated to our mission and good stewardship of the assets of the University that fall underour area of responsibility. Those budget cuts, along with subsequent reductions at the beginning of fiscal year 2009–’10 andagain at mid-year in December, underscore the importance of private gifts. We appreciate thegenerosity of donors whose names are included in this annual Report on Philanthropy. In many cases, donors’ gifts are matched by the state Board of Regents Support Fund to createendowed chairs, endowed professorships and endowed scholarships. Endowed funds are invested;only earned interest is used. So the principal remains a source of perpetual funding for salarysupplements that are used to attract and retain exceptional faculty members and for scholarshipsawarded to deserving students.Throughout the past year, UL Lafayette faculty and students showed they are worthy of all of thesupport we can offer. In October, for example, an extraordinary group of architecture, engineeringand business administration students and faculty members went to Washington, D.C., to competein the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon. UL Lafayette was one of only 20 universitiesfrom around the world chosen to design and build solar homes that were displayed on the NationalMall. Its Team BeauSoleil stood shoulder-to-shoulder with teams from universities such as Cornell, the University of Madrid and Ohio State. The BeauSoleil Louisiana Solar Home earned two majorawards during the Solar Decathlon: the first-place Market Viability Award and the People’s ChoiceAward. National and international media coverage of the event accurately conveyed that ULLafayette students and faculty are smart, disciplined and determined. In 2009 we upgraded our staff resource through key additions and continuing education;improved our accounting and financial reporting; and conducted an extensive evaluationof our external advisors that will improve our ability to manage the investment portfoliogoing forward. That portfolio has recovered much of the value lost during the serious marketdownturn brought on by the worldwide recession. These results are through the efforts of thededicated volunteers on our Board, our professional staff and the support of the University.Margaret Chauvin Steen Villemez, one of the founding members and the longest serving memberof our board, died this year at age 93. Margaret and her family have supported UL Lafayette andits students with scholarships and endowments at a significant level. We are grateful for herservice and generosity. As Foundation President, I am inspired by those who continue to give sogenerously to the University year after year. I know that this spirit will continue into the futureand produce great benefit for those that follow us. Thank you for your generosity. Also in October, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan cited Louisiana as the only state in thecountry that tracks the effectiveness of its teacher preparation programs. He praised UL Lafayettespecifically for including student test scores in its evaluations of its College of Education graduates.Within weeks, Washington Post and National Public Radio reporters were on our campus to learnmore about our success. So, we thank every donor whose support has enabled UL Lafayette to continue to excel. We aregrateful for every gift.2 3

U L L A F A Y E T T E F O U N D A T I O NULLAFAYETTEFOUNDATION.ORG | 337.482.0700Just about every program, department and organization on the campus of the University of LouisianaLafayette has been effected in some way by the UL Lafayette Foundation. A student is able to followtheir dream of studying music because of a scholarship received. A professor is able to research thelatest in technology because of a professorship he or she was awarded. A group of students is ableto compete in a national competition because of funds raised through the Foundation. There arecountless stories found all around campus that can be told.UL LAFAYETTE FOUNDATION promotes theeducational, social, moral and material welfare of ULLafayette by assisting in the acquisition of donationsand the investment of the endowment portfolio. These stories are able to unfold because of generous donors that selflessly give in order to take our Universityto the next level. Donors like Col. Philip and Jean Piccione who have established six professorships andare on their way to creating a million dollar chair in Statistics. Or businesses like Cox and Coca-ColaBottling Company who have generous corporate sponsorships with the Athletic Department. Individualsand businesses alike fuel our University to move it along on a journey of excellence. Each year we recognize those donors who go above and beyond at our Distinguished Donors Reception.A Distinguished Donor is one who gives at least $10,000 to the University. When a donor gives$50,000 or more, they are inducted into the University’s Hall of Honor. The Hall of Honor is foundat Martin Hall on the second and third floors. Plaques line the wall commemorating each donation. At the 2009 Distinguished Donor Reception, we were able to induct seven members into the Hallof Honor, which brings the total plaques to 292. Through the Athletic Department and UniversityArt Museum Walls of Honor and the Alumni Association Walk of Honor, the Univerisity is able torecognize the generosity of our donors all across campus.THE DISTINGUISHED DONORS RECEPTION is a yearly event at which theFoundation recognizes donors who go above and beyond to help the UniversityTHE UNIVERSITY HALL OF HONOR and UNIVERSITY ART MUSEUM WALL OF HONORAnother way we recognize our donors is through the Honor Roll. The UL Lafayette Foundation’sHonor Roll is an annual program that enables the Foundation to generate unrestricted gifts. Giftsare primarily used for operational expenses, development efforts, publications and to respond to theUniversity’s needs not met by state funding. Those who become members of the Honor Roll areeligible for consideration onto the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. With ever increasing budget and economic concern, private giving is a crucial component to keep ourUniversity moving towards excellence. Our donors are incredibly generous and genuinely care aboutseeing the University prosper and grow. We truly appreciate your support.Sincerely,Executive Director4 5
