In 1900 when the university was first established, an initial investment was made. The leaders
who established Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute may not have known exactly what
kind of impact that investment would have, but they did envision what they hoped the university
would become. Today, nearly 17,000 students attend UL Lafayette and the university is in a position
for tremendous growth. A growth that would not be possible without the generosity of our donors.
Our donors recognize the importance of investing in higher education. An investment to UL Lafayette
involves much more than a dollar figure. It is an investment in the students who attend the university
today and in the future. It’s an investment in the faculty, to ensure top tier educators and researchers
come to Lafayette and stay. It’s an investment in athletics and the coaches who will take our teams
to the next level.
No matter what the investment is, it has an impact. Whether the degree of the impact is small or
large, it has a far reaching effect. An effect that allows us to envision a university with thousands
of new students, professors recognized for their breakthrough research and an athletic program
with national rankings and conference titles.
110 years ago, there were only 100 students and eight faculty on campus. It is amazing to see the
impact an investment can have.

DR. E. JOSEPH SAVOIE
PRESIDENT - UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA LAFAYETTE
Dr. E. Joseph Savoie
President - University of Louisiana Lafayette
The University of Louisiana Lafayette has embarked on an aggressive
$148 million construction initiative that will reenergize a section
of campus over the next few years. Student residences will be built
and existing dormitories will be renovated. A parking garage will be
constructed and the Student Union will be renovated and expanded to
better suit students’ needs.
A project of this magnitude may seem like a bold step, since higher
education in Louisiana has experienced state budget cuts that have
totaled about 20 percent in the past two years. It is a bold step. But
it is needed to enable UL Lafayette to achieve its goals of increasing
enrollment and improving its graduation rate.
Along with new campus housing, the university will introduce
living-learning communities, which will bring together students with
common interests. For example, freshman who are enrolled in firstyear
seminar and have some of the same classes may live in the same
section. Research shows that living-learning communities improve
student retention rates and academic achievement.
Most of the existing Student Union will be demolished, with the
exception of the section that now houses the bookstore, Bayou Bijou
and ballroom. The new energy efficient facility will incorporate those
areas and wrap around Cypress Lake. There will be an inviting new
entrance from McKinley Street and most of the dining and public
areas will face the lake.
This substantial construction initiative is possible because it
is funded through room rental and self-assessed student fees through
Ragin’ Cajun Facilities Inc., a separately incorporated nonprofit
organization established to assist the university with its building
plans. That means that donors’ contributions are as crucial as ever
for UL Lafayette’s continued advancement.
With this Report on Philanthropy, we express our gratitude to all
alumni and friends who entrusted their gifts to UL Lafayette in the
past year.
that values higher education and is willing to express
its appreciation in a tangible way.
UL Lafayette could not have reached its status as a significant
research institution, and the second-largest university in Louisiana,
without the help of donors, such as the ones whose names are
listed in this Report on Philanthropy.
We are grateful for all gifts and will continue to use them wisely.
BARRY BERTHELOT
PRESIDENT - UL LAFAYETTE FOUNDATION
This ever changing world continues to bring new challenges to each
of us individually as well as the institutions which we serve. We have
seen a continuation of a weakened local and national economy which
has impacted funding to the University from all sources. Throughout
this time period, we remain viable and strong. Our strength comes
from the generosity of our donors, alumni and volunteers.
Our donors truly transcend the current challenges and once again
have demonstrated that they value UL Lafayette through their active
support. We honored nine new contributors of $50,000 or more at
this year’s successful Distinguished Donors event. This brings the
number of plaques in the Hall of Honor at Martin Hall to 299 and
builds the Foundation’s endowments to a value of over $103 million
and a total asset value of $119.5 million.
Each year we ask the Trustees of the UL Lafayette Foundation to
serve as leaders to affect positive change for the benefit of the
organization. These volunteers have dedicated their time and talent
in many areas. Most notably, we were able to revamp our asset
management programs and policies to reflect the demands of today’s
investing environment. Because of their work, our portfolio has
recovered significant value and is achieving market returns through
appropriate investment strategies. I am honored to serve with them
for the good of our university.
Over the past 50 years, philanthropic support to the University of
Louisiana Lafayette Foundation has grown considerably. This year
was no exception. Our donors are dedicated in their generosity to the
university, even throughout the uncertainty of the U.S. economy.
We are truly grateful for that commitment.
We are constantly striving to provide maximum return on our
investments with minimal risk. And while we’ve had some significant
market fluctuations, we faired better than other university
endowments. We are optimistic about our new direction, and I am
confident this will allow us to be more resilient than ever.
The Foundation currently manages approximately 1,700 active
funds, with assets totaling $119.5 million. In 2010, we made
several changes to our investment strategy including selecting a
new investment advisory firm. With their guidance, the Foundation
investment team has implemented new strategies working toward
a more diversified asset allocation with greater return potential.
By diversifying our investment portfolio, we are on target for an
allocation of approximately 55% global equities, 29% global
fixed income and 16% real assets and diversifying strategies. To
view complete financial information, please visit our website at
ullafayettefoundation.org.
We have also modified how funds for endowed accounts are spent
each fiscal year. In the past, we have allowed up to 5% of the
endowment principal to be awarded for a fund. However, in order
to preserve the fund’s sustainability, we have revised our payout
percentage to a more reasonable range of 4-4.5%. The amount is
calculated by analyzing earnings over a three year rolling average.
Many universities have already incorporated this trend. According to
the NACUBO-Commonfund Study of Endowments (NCSE) one in four
universities have adjusted their spending rate.
The Foundation takes additional steps to increasing the endowment
principal on all endowed accounts. Each year, as long as funds are
available, a percentage of earnings is transferred into the principal
portion of the account. By increasing the amount of the endowment
principal in the account, over time, this will also increase the amount
available each year.
It is my honor and privilege to serve the UL Lafayette Foundation
and Board of Trustees. I want to personally thank you for your
continued support and dedication to the University of Louisiana
Lafayette. Your donation impacts the lives of students and faculty
today and in the future.
Sincerely,
Julie Bolton Falgout, M.B.A.
UL LAFAYETTE FOUNDATION & ACADEMICS
INVEST.
Donors can create a lasting
legacy through the
establishment of an endowed or
non-endowed scholarship
UL LAFAYETTE ACADEMICS
LOUISIANA.EDU/ACADEMIC/ | 337.482.0000
Scholarships can change a student’s life and open doors that may
have never been available. With the creation of a scholarship, donors
can ensure that higher education remains available to exceptional
and deserving students regardless of their financial circumstances.
Although the university has been able to avoid tuition increases
for many years, that will change in 2011. Previously, approval from
Legislature was needed to raise tuition. However, with the passing of
the GRAD act (Granting Resources and Autonomy for Diplomas), state
universities now have limited authority to raise tuition in exchange
for improved performance in key areas, including graduation rates.
With tuition increasing, giving to and creating scholarships has
become even more important.
earnings is added back into the principal for perpetual growth. This
ensures a donors legacy continues well into the future.”
Another option is a non-endowed scholarship. Donors who wish to
make a non-endowed gift for student scholarships may do so on a
one-time, periodic or annual basis with a gift of $500 or more. These
funds are fully expendable and available for immediate use.
Many companies offer matching gift programs to employees, retirees
and employee spouses. To see if your company takes part, visit with
your human resources office or call the Foundation at 337.482.0700.
IMPACT.
A student without the financial
resources may now be able to
achieve their educational goals
In early 2010 the university began the silent phase of a scholarship
campaign. The goal is to raise $4.5 million and create 120 new
scholarships. This is a first campaign of its kind at the university.
When Dr. Savoie announced he wanted to increase enrollment at
the university, the Development Office took action. They wanted to
establish a scholarship campaign to keep the number of scholarships
available in line with the increasing number of students on campus.
ENVISION.
The scholarship campaign carries two objectives: to invest in the
future and transform lives. Scholarship endowments are permanent
investments in UL students. With a gift of $10,000 or more, a donor
may select a particular college and/or department they wish to
dedicate their endowment. Each year, the Foundation makes available
a portion of the endowment earnings for the purpose the donor
selected when the endowment fund was established.
“Funding an endowment allows a donor to make a permanent mark on
the university,” said Julie Bolton Falgout, Executive Director of the
Foundation. “We are constantly striving to protect that endowment
and help it grow. As a result, each year, part of the endowment
The Foundation currently has over 700 scholarship funds. Some
carry a small balance while others carry a balance of over $1 million.
Regardless of size, every individual fund has the capability to make
a student’s educational dreams come true. We are truly grateful for
your generosity and support.
On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded in the
Gulf of Mexico, approximately 50 miles off the Louisiana coastline,
causing the largest oil spill in U.S. history. As oil began gushing into
the Gulf, faculty and staff at UL Lafayette were quickly assessing how
they could help in the recovery and response.
The state quickly realized they needed access to university
expertise. They created a 20 person panel entitled ‘Horizon Science
and Engineering Review Team’ (HSERT) to provide technical input.
Four researchers from the university including the Dean of the
College of Engineering Dr. Mark Zappi, Engineering Professors
Dr. Don Hayes and Dr. Ehab Meselhe and Associate Professor of
Renewable Resources Dr. Jenneke Visser served on the panel making
recommendations and sharing knowledge on response, remediation,
and restoration.
UL Lafayette’s Vice President for Research, Dr. Robert Twilley led
the panel of university experts and Dean Zappi worked with the
cleanup subcommittee. Zappi made recommendations, reviewed work
plans, offered suggestions on meeting with federal officials and met
with companies on behalf of the governor’s office. “At UL Lafayette,
we have been studying the coastline for so long, our expertise
was so valuable to everyone,” Zappi said. “Our role in the recovery
and cleanup shows we are key players and that UL Lafayette is a
top research institution.”
When Governor Bobby Jindal activated the Louisiana Business
Emergency Operation Center (BEOC), Ramesh Kolluru and the UL
Lafayette National Incident Management Systems and Advanced
Technologies (NIMSAT) Institute got to work. They were tasked with
presenting ideas on how to cap the well and remediate the coastal
wetlands. They solicited ideas from the private sector and presented
the best solutions to the appropriate agencies. “Often the individuals
in the private sector are the ones directly impacted by the disaster,”
Dr. Ramesh Kolluru, Executive Director of NIMSAT said. “By allowing
them to contribute their ideas and solutions, we are helping them
provide their services to government and as a result, may be helping
them stay in business.” NIMSAT also is providing statistical analysis
of the economic impact of the disaster itself and the deepwater
drilling moratorium.
The input of these faculty was just a small part of research being
done by UL Lafayette employees. Researchers at the university
received three National Science Foundation (NSF) grants to study the
effects of the oil spill. Dr. Darryl Felder and Dr. Suzanne Fredericq
received an $185,608 Rapid Response Research (RAPID) grant
to visit banks and pinnacles where offshore seaweeds and macro
crustaceans have previously been documented. Dr. Azmy Ackleh, Dr.
Nabendu Pal and Dr. Natalia Sidorovskaia received a $912,197 RAPID
grant to assess the immediate impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil
spill on near by resident populations of endangered whale species.
In addition, Dr. Bob Grambling of the Sociology Department is
collaborating as a Co-Principal Investigator on a $57,306 NSF grant
to study the impact of the media stories on the oil spill by
completing a content analysis of the media accounting and designing
and implementing a survey to measure residents’ understanding
of the event.
Shortly after the oil spill, BP announced a commitment of up to
$600 million for the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GRI) to study
the impact of the Deepwater Horizon incident and its effects on the
environment; as well as developing new technology in deepwater
oil exploration. Dr. Twilley along with three other Louisiana university
Vice Presidents/Vice Chancellors joined to develop an initiative
named the Gulf Research Institute for a Resilient Louisiana (GRI-
RL). GRI-RL will compete for the BP dollars to perform research.
“We are excited about our universities working collaboratively to
secure funding for research that will yield immediate short-term and
medium-term solutions for the on-going remediation and recovery
effort,” Twilley said. “We believe this will position Louisiana on
a roadmap for strategic and long-term sustainable development.
Obtaining even just a portion of these research dollars could make
a huge impact on our university.”
Taking an active interest in current
UL LAFAYETTE ALUMNI
LOUISIANAALUMNI.ORG | 337.482.0900
In 1984, the Alumni Association established its first endowed
scholarship. Today, they have 11 endowed scholarships; one for each
of the nine colleges, one for a Student Alumni Association member
and one for a first generation student in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Ray
Authement. This commitment to philanthropy comes with a desire to
build a relationship with the students.
the Washington D.C. area has one of the most active alumni groups
outside of Lafayette. The group hosts two fundraisers a year with the
money raised going toward the UL Lafayette Baltimore/Washington
D.C. Ragin’ Cajun Club Scholarship. The club is currently working on
raising enough funds to endow their scholarship at the $10,000 level.
“We want to connect with students while they are still here,”
said Dan Hare, Executive Director of the Alumni Association. “If
we connect with them through a scholarship, hopefully they will
remember that and pay it forward by creating their own scholarship
after they have graduated and are in a position to do so. We want
them to become more than just a member of the Alumni Association.
We want to encourage them to become stewards for the university.”
IMPACT.
Graduates become active stewards
and give back to the university.
Now that they have met their initial goal of establishing a scholarship
for each college on campus, the Alumni Association has taken
their endowments to the next level. “When we initially created our
scholarships, they were endowed at the $10,000 level,” Hare said.
“Since then, we have tripled the endowed funds to increase the value
of each award so the impact is stronger.”
If you would like more information on the Alumni Association,
please visit www.LouisianaAlumni.org
In 2010, the Alumni Association gave over $100,000 in scholarship
dollars to the Foundation and was inducted into the Distinguished
Donor Hall of Honor. The funds were raised through a variety of
sources including the Alumni Annual Fund and the UL License Plate
affinity program.
Nearly ten different clubs and chapters of the Alumni Association
have established additional scholarships for students and these
constituent groups host their own fundraising events to maintain and
increase their respective funds. With a roster of over 1000 members,
IMPACT.
The university is able to hire high
profile coaches with a proven history
of winning and renovate and build
new athletic facilities
UL LAFAYETTE ATHLETICS
RAGINCAJUNS.COM | 337.482.5393
In the spring of 2009, the Ragin’ Cajun Athletic Foundation officially
kicked off and since then, Ragin’ Cajun Athletics has not been the
same. From the hiring of new coaches to the improvements of athletic
facilities, nearly every sport is feeling the positive effects
of RCAF.
Before RCAF was officially launched, it took a lot of time and
research to set up the Foundation correctly. Board members and
stakeholders met with other universities to determine best practices
on building a successful program. “We thought it would be humble
beginnings,” said John Bordelon, RCAF Board Chairman. “We just
really want to put the message out there and encourage as many
people as possible to get involved.”
Since its inception, the RCAF annual fund has raised over one million
dollars. In 2010 alone, approximately 580 individuals contributed
to the fund. Considering there are over 100,000 alumni of UL
Lafayette, there is plenty of room for growth. “The number of people
contributing is as important as the amount being contributed,”
Bordelon said. “If 30-40,000 alumni give $100 a year that could
make a significant difference. People in the Cajun community are not
used to giving to athletics on an annual basis. We need to change
that mindset.”
cuts,” he said. “Working together, we can concentrate on the
university’s core mission of academic excellence while continuing
to move our athletics program forward.”
One way RCAF has been able to make an impact is through the hiring
of top tier coaches like basketball coach Bob Marlin, football coach
Mark Hudspeth, and women’s tennis coach Greg Harkins. “A benefit
of RCAF is that funds are available to supplement in addition to what
the university is able to offer, making a salary package much more
attractive” Bordelon said.
Scott Farmer agrees. “Two years ago we would not have been able to
do this,” Farmer said. “When we are talking to potential coaches and
we share our budget and our resources with them compared to their
peers in the Sunbelt, it’s impressive. RCAF helped us achieve that.”
ENVISION.
First class athletic facilities,
conference titles and
national rankings
Although the athletic department has been fund raising for years, an
annual fund drive is a much different approach. Previously, money
was raised as a need arose, but now, it is raised on a continual basis.
As a result, the annual fund drive provides dollars to supplement
the athletic budget and its programs while providing a sustainable
revenue source year after year. “With RCAF, we can plan ahead,”
Interim Director of Athletics Scott Farmer said. “It allows us to plan
and let the Athletic Director do what he needs to do to advance the
department. The faster the annual fund grows, the faster the athletic
department can grow.”
Dr. Joseph Savoie, UL Lafayette’s President, supports the strategic
approach to raising funds needed for athletics. “The RCAF’s
involvement is especially important in light of recent state budget
Other ways RCAF has made an impact is assisting in the overhaul
of the softball, baseball and track facilities and setting up a new
infrastructure in the athletic department. New operational positions
in football and basketball have taken over day to day administrative
tasks to allow the coaches to focus on coaching.
“Athletics is the face of many universities and we can have
successful athletic programs that will bring attention to
our university,” Bordelon said. “If we attract high caliber faculty
and students to the university because of athletic recognition,
it’s a win-win.”
