Anne hascompleted 41 handicaps during her “very intermittent”membership since joining in 1992. She normally runs inthe Thomas series but had not been too well so decided todo the walk anyway. She found the course ‘very interesting’and was very surprised when she realized she was in factthe first to finish. Anne does not consider herself a ‘sporty’person and only ever jogged to keep fit, even before Vets. She used to do dragon boat racing and now does a ‘bit ofbush walking’. Originally from Queensland Anne nowworks with the Dept of Health. She hopes to be moreregular at the handicaps in 2010 because her partner,Hugh Moore, is making it a part of his return to runningand so Anne has decided she does want to be left behind.Second place gave the gold medal to Tammy Gerrard, and she was very surprised. There was a major motivatingfactor for Tammy, and that was that her ‘cheeky bugger’husband had said he would beat her home because he isfaster than her. Tammy was determined to prove himwrong, and she did! She also found herself a bit miffedwhen Will Foster passed her going down the hills, soTammy pushed herself a bit harder and was able to passhim up the hills and then again in the home straight.Evidence that she pushed herself was sore muscles forabout a week afterwards. She says maybe her strength hasbuilt up because three days a week she pushes a doublepram with her two youngest children, Lachie and Angelaon board for about 2km and most of it is uphill. She lovedthe course although found the surface a bit ‘rolling', but shelikes most of the courses and being in the Vets. She enjoysthe social atmosphere, the encouragement and is especiallyreally grateful for the child minding facilities. Will Foster was third over the line for a silver medal, his second medal this year. Will was very surprised to beplaced since his re-handicapping after his last win, but wasstill very pleased. He did find it a bit hot and sultry on theday, saying his legs got tired going through the wet grass, but he was able to get away quickly because the course isnice and wide. However he admits he was ‘buggered’ at theend. On the whole though Will says it is a good course. Amember since 1984 Will has completed 171 handicaps andwon three gold, two silver and three bronze medals.Margaret Latham was possibly more surprised thanshe was last month to learn she had won a medal, this timea bronze, for being fourth over the line. After her win lastmonth Margaret thinks maybe with the excellent coachingfrom her daughters, Megan and Karen, she is perhapsbecoming ‘a bit more competitive’. She does always try herhardest though, and at Stromlo she was very pleased withher effort after 2km, and thinking it was a 3km event feltshe some energy left for the last km. Then she realised thecourse was actually 4km! But she pushed on anyway. Thiswas Margaret’s second medal in her seven handicaps andnow she has her eye firmly on a gold medal!Neil Gentle was not surprised to finish in the middle ofthe pack because he says he has done little training of lateas he has been busy house hunting and getting his currenthouse ready for sale. Neil said the conditions were verypleasant, although he noticed the humidity and the softsurface made the going a bit harder. Neil is not used to softsurfaces because he and his wife, Noeline Gentle (whohas competed in the Waddell series in previous years),spend many hours each week enjoying practicing, takinglessons or participating in ballroom dancing. In 20 th position Rod Gilchrist set a new course recordof 0:27:20 for the M60. Obviously out to show his daughterBelinda Bounty and his wife Jenny Gilchrist, bothdoing the Thomas, that the handicaps are serious business.Sally McCabe won the wooden spoon, and like all trueathletes was not prepared to accept total responsibility. She said her new baby – not due to be born till July – heldher up! Even so Sally says it was a good course and sheenjoyed it. The new unborn baby does not stop her going tothe gym three times a week and walking around LakeTuggeranong twice a week. Sally joined three years agowith Julie Triggs and has completed 17 handicaps.Through the week she works in aged care.T-ShirtsRAD LEOVIC: 50Rad’s debut handicap was at Lake Tuggeranong inOctober 1999 and all have been on the long course but he isyet to win a medal.Although Rad only joined in 1999, his association withveterans’ athletics goes back to 1972 when he was amember of the Australian team participating in the firstinternational athletics meets for men over 40 conducted atCrystal Palace and Cologne.Continued Page 14
