The AGM voted tomake payments to suppliers andreimburse volunteer expenses byelectronic transfer rather thanbeing dependent on signingcheques.Education and researchSince our last meeting a successfulBuchanan lecture has takenplace at Liverpool University.Professor Wim Jansen gave alecture on ‘Basque and Esperanto– what we can learn from comworkof all involved, tangibleresults have been disappointing.No one used the 10% discountcode distributed at the event, andthe winner of the competitionhas not been in touch to usetheir EAB voucher.The second InternationalLanguage Festival took place inSheffield in March. EAB was oneof the main sponsors of the eventand ran a series of Esperantotaster courses during the weekend(see page 12).CongressAfter a successful congress inEdinburgh, we are pleased toannounce that the British Congress2013 will take place inRamsgate. Thanks are due toTerry Watts, Penny Bryant andMarteno MiniÕ, who have volunteeredto organise the event.Volunteers Bill Walker and Joyce Bunting again providing EAB’s muchappreciatedtravelling book service at the successful congress in Edinburghapprove the Management Committee’ssuggestion not to automaticallyreappoint KingstonSmith but to investigate thepossibility of using a differentindependent examiner. I amcurrently in the process ofobtaining quotes and am hopefulthat we will be able to obtainbetter service at a cheaper priceby using a smaller, more localfirm of accountants.We are also in the process ofopening a new bank accountwith CAF, an institution whospecialise in charity banking. Ourexisting Santander account willremain open for the foreseeablefuture, but this second accountwill give us the added flexibilityof online banking, enabling us toparing the incomparable’. We aregrateful for the hard work of theBuchanan committee (EdRobertson, Angela Tellier andPaul Gubbins), without whichthis would not have been possible.Angela Tellier has beenworking hard on a booklet whichwill present a summary of thefindings from the evaluation ofthe Springboard project. EAB willfinance publication of thisbooklet, which we hope will bepublished at some point over thesummer.PublicityDespite the very professionalorganisation of the October 2011Language Show and the hardNew trusteeFollowing the AGM in Edinburgh,we are delighted toannounce that Hugh Reid hasbeen elected as a new member ofthe Management Committee.Hugh is currently getting to gripswith the inner workings of theassociation and will complete hisinduction during our workingweekend in June. Of course, weare still hoping to recruit moretrustees for 2013. SOMERA FESTIVALOSUMMER FESTIVALSomera Festivalo 2012:New location, new traditionsWe are happy to announcethat Jack Warren, VivO’Dunne and Tim Owen havebeen busy scouting alternativelocations to host our traditionalSomera Festivalo. All three areextremely satisfied withShallowford House in Stone,Staffordshire, which is aroundfive miles away from Staffordtrain station. Viv has liaised withthe staff and even visited thevenue, reporting that “I can’t tellyou how lovely these people are.Nothing is too much trouble.”The Somera Festivalo will runfrom 13 to 17 August under thewatch of the very experiencedJack Warren. The activities will beappropriate for progresantoj andprogresintoj. Arrival time is from11.30 a.m. and the course willcommence with a lunch onMonday, the 13th.Visit to EAB office and librarySince Shallowford House is only9 miles away from EsperantoHouse, we’re hoping to build avisit to the Library and Officeinto the programme.
