from thePRESIDENT’S DESK<strong>The</strong> year <strong>2012</strong> dawned amidst global economic and political upheaval.Never have I been happier to be in South Africa.Christopher Sparks“Keep it Straight and Simple” was the slogan ofthe 1994 “KISS” party; and may well be our key tosustainable stock farming in this country. Well adaptedlivestock will certainly ride the wave of unpredictableweather patterns.<strong>Cattle</strong> numbers are growing and the <strong>Brangus</strong> Officeappears to be running like a well oiled machine; withadministrative structures now firmly in place and officestaff as enthusiastic as ever.<strong>The</strong> ARC’s removal of their “Intergis” out from underthe control of Studbook has led to the strengthening ofits ties to “BreedPlan” and the “LRF”. Our contributionto the national database will increase as a result andshall require dedication from all with regard to datacollection. Little do we realise how much our databank has contributed to the growth of our Society. <strong>The</strong>upgraded “Breedplan” system with its monthly groupruns and genomically enhanced EBV’s will surely putthe Society in the forefront of livestock improvement inSouth Africa.Production Sales are on theincrease with very good pricesbeing attained. Despite the fact thatour 2011 National Sale saw bull pricesreaching new record highs; there were also qualitybulls sold to buyers with more moderate budgets. Oursituation in the marketplace is indeed very healthy.<strong>The</strong> <strong>Brangus</strong> in South Africa has come a long way sinceits inception in 1963. I believe that no effort has beenspared by breeders over the years, in nurturing this breedinto the new millennia. <strong>The</strong> 50 year edition of our journal(2013) should include tribute to those breeders precedingus, and material input will therefore be required from ourcurrent members.Congratulations to our newly appointed selectors whowill greatly lighten the current selection workload.I thank my dynamic council for their efforts in thatwhich they do; and wish every member of my <strong>Brangus</strong>family a successful and exciting year.<strong>BRANGUS</strong><strong>Journal</strong> <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Joernaal</strong>5
