ln one oI tnerr mosf successlulseasons ever. the Wits CricketClub captured both trophiesin the Transvaal League. Bywinning the Premier Leagueas well as the Dion's SundayLeague, Wits became the firstclub to win both titles in thesame season.The season was characterisedby a number ol' close finishes,with Wits generally coming outon top. Only two del'eats weresuffered in the league in the entireseason. The team's success waslargely due to the spirit and willto win displayed by the players.The club's professional coach,Richard Ellison. had an outstandingseason, topping bothbatting and bowling averages. H ewas an inspiration to the side inhis performances on the field, aswell as in his attitude towards thegame.However, he was by no meansthe only player to turn in goodperformances, and the seasonsaw the emergence of many otherfine players. Bruce McBride andKevin Kerr, both Tvl B regulars,played matches in the TransvaalTeam. while Mike Rindel alsoplayed in the Tvl B team. BruceMcBride. a former NorthernI ransvaal wrcKet-Keeper, had agood season behind the stumps,and was rewarded with a SAUcap. With the advent ofthe unofficial season in Aprill98l Wits University scored alirst in being the first body inSouth Africa to run an indoorsoccer league.However, now that the noveltyof Indoor Soccer appears to haveworn off, virtually every team inthis year's league has had experiencein this extremely fast (andextremely tiring) form of soccer.In fact four teams, namely Law,Portuguese, Spanners and Commercehave participated in theleague since its inception.These teams, together withBaqt, Italians, Miners andMindomob play matches insidethe Old Mutual Sports Hall everyFriday night (weather and internationalevents permitting) withspectators and fanclubs welcomeand encouraged.The Wits Indoor Soccer ClubAway (T)AwayAway (T)HomeHomeHome (T)HomeHomeAwayAway (T)AwayHome (T)Away (T)Home (T)Away (T)Hockey loses but winsThe men's Hockey club ismade up of 9 teams, whichplay every Sunday morningfrom the beginning of April tomid August. The club plays inthe STHA leagues. Wits lstteam plays in the top premierleague. The 9th team plays inthe bottom league, so the clubcaters for all levels of hockeyplayers.This year the club has had arecord number of new membersof which 4 are ex-SA schoolplayers. At present the club hashad limited success on the hockeyfield. This should however improvein the future. At a recentis also attempting to negotiatethe holding of an Intervarsitytournament at Wits.tournament the lst team showedtrue Wits spirit by losing most oftheir rnatches but walking offwith the social prize. Elevenplayers have been selected torepresent Southern Transvaal atthe SA U2l tournament.Anyone interested in playinghockey for the club should godown to practises at the hockeyfields, in front of GR Bozzoli, onTuesdays and Thursdays between5.30-6.30pm.News FlashAt the PRONUTRO SPORT-ING GREATS competition heldin Johannesburg this week. twoWits and ex Wits sportspeoplewere nominated as being amongSouth Africa's top sPortspeoPle.Those nominated were:Bruce Fordyce (marathon)Mark Plaatjies (marathon) currentlya Wits student.TennistournamentThe annual Wits closedTennis Tournament will beheld this year from May 12 toJune 2.The prize money for this eventhas been increased substantially;and for the first time in manYyears, trophies will be presentedto the winners of the differentevents. Another first for thetournament is that men andwomen players will receive equalprize money.Play takes place on SaturdaYsand Sundays, commencing on l2May, and ending with the finalson June 2.The entry fee for the tournament,covering all events, is R8,and the closing date for entries is2.fi)pm.
