ln one oI tnerr mosf successlulseasons ever. <strong>the</strong> Wits CricketClub captured both trophiesin <strong>the</strong> Transvaal League. Bywinning <strong>the</strong> Premier Leagueas well as <strong>the</strong> Dion's SundayLeague, Wits became <strong>the</strong> firstclub to win both titles in <strong>the</strong>same season.The season was characterisedby a number ol' close finishes,with Wits generally coming outon top. Only two del'eats weresuffered in <strong>the</strong> league in <strong>the</strong> entireseason. The team's success waslargely due to <strong>the</strong> spirit and willto win displayed by <strong>the</strong> players.The club's pr<strong>of</strong>essional coach,Richard Ellison. had an outstandingseason, topping bothbatting and bowling averages. H ewas an inspiration to <strong>the</strong> side inhis performances on <strong>the</strong> field, aswell as in his attitude towards <strong>the</strong>game.However, he was by no means<strong>the</strong> only player to turn in goodperformances, and <strong>the</strong> seasonsaw <strong>the</strong> emergence <strong>of</strong> many o<strong>the</strong>rfine players. Bruce McBride andKevin Kerr, both Tvl B regulars,played matches in <strong>the</strong> TransvaalTeam. while Mike Rindel alsoplayed in <strong>the</strong> Tvl B team. BruceMcBride. a former Nor<strong>the</strong>rnI ransvaal wrcKet-Keeper, had agood season behind <strong>the</strong> stumps,and was rewarded with a SAUcap. With <strong>the</strong> advent <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> un<strong>of</strong>ficial season in Aprill98l Wits <strong>University</strong> scored alirst in being <strong>the</strong> first body inSouth Africa to run an indoorsoccer league.However, now that <strong>the</strong> novelty<strong>of</strong> Indoor Soccer appears to haveworn <strong>of</strong>f, virtually every team inthis year's league has had experiencein this extremely fast (andextremely tiring) form <strong>of</strong> soccer.In fact four teams, namely Law,Portuguese, Spanners and Commercehave participated in <strong>the</strong>league since its inception.These teams, toge<strong>the</strong>r withBaqt, Italians, Miners andMindomob play matches inside<strong>the</strong> Old Mutual Sports Hall everyFriday night (wea<strong>the</strong>r and internationalevents permitting) withspectators and fanclubs welcomeand encouraged.The Wits Indoor Soccer ClubAway (T)AwayAway (T)HomeHomeHome (T)HomeHomeAwayAway (T)AwayHome (T)Away (T)Home (T)Away (T)Hockey loses but winsThe men's Hockey club ismade up <strong>of</strong> 9 teams, whichplay every Sunday morningfrom <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> April tomid August. The club plays in<strong>the</strong> STHA leagues. Wits lstteam plays in <strong>the</strong> top premierleague. The 9th team plays in<strong>the</strong> bottom league, so <strong>the</strong> clubcaters for all levels <strong>of</strong> hockeyplayers.This year <strong>the</strong> club has had arecord number <strong>of</strong> new members<strong>of</strong> which 4 are ex-SA schoolplayers. At present <strong>the</strong> club hashad limited success on <strong>the</strong> hockeyfield. This should however improvein <strong>the</strong> future. At a recentis also attempting to negotiate<strong>the</strong> holding <strong>of</strong> an Intervarsitytournament at Wits.tournament <strong>the</strong> lst team showedtrue Wits spirit by losing most <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>ir rnatches but walking <strong>of</strong>fwith <strong>the</strong> social prize. Elevenplayers have been selected torepresent Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Transvaal at<strong>the</strong> SA U2l tournament.Anyone interested in playinghockey for <strong>the</strong> club should godown to practises at <strong>the</strong> hockeyfields, in front <strong>of</strong> GR Bozzoli, onTuesdays and Thursdays between5.30-6.30pm.News FlashAt <strong>the</strong> PRONUTRO SPORT-ING GREATS competition heldin Johannesburg this week. twoWits and ex Wits sportspeoplewere nominated as being amongSouth Africa's top sPortspeoPle.Those nominated were:Bruce Fordyce (marathon)Mark Plaatjies (marathon) currentlya Wits student.TennistournamentThe annual Wits closedTennis Tournament will beheld this year from May 12 toJune 2.The prize money for this eventhas been increased substantially;and for <strong>the</strong> first time in manYyears, trophies will be presentedto <strong>the</strong> winners <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> differentevents.
