The life science companies in the BioregionRegensburg work in at least one of these fields.What is interdisciplinary?Interdisciplinary means the use of approaches, ways of thinking or atleast methods from different fields of study. Several location analyses(see IA-Biotech) identified companies in the region in the fields ofmechanical engineering, metal construction, glass production andelectrical engineering, which have products and developments fromthe life sciences field.Our MissionOur mission is the advancement ofbiotechnology in the region. Thisincludes the constant expansion ofthe network of the BioRegion Regensburgand the Technology and StartupCentre. With support from the State of Bavaria, theGerman Government and the European Union, the BioPark waserected for 42 million € in three construction phases in 2001,2006 and 2011 directly on the grounds of the University.The multifunctional buildings offer in total 18,000 sqm state ofthe art laboratory, office and storage facilities for companiesand institutes in the field of biotechnology, medical technologyand associated services. In addition to use of the universityinfrastructure and small distances between buildings on site,Regensburg’s own motorway connection facilitates direct andrapid connections to Munich, Frankfurt and Berlin. Currently 32leaseholders with 550 employees are active in the BioPark.­6

In this period over 254 million € have been investedin the development of the “life sciences”, of this solely 102 million € in venture capital. 37 companies have been foundedsince 1999 and the number of employees has increased more than seven-fold to 3000. The BioPark companies haveregularly received awards of excellence for their innovative business ideas, e.g. the German Foundation Prize (AntisensePharma) or the European Biotechnica Award (Geneart, today partof US Life Technologies Inc.). AMGEN Research GmbH is the firstresearch center in Europe that is from one of the largest Biotechcompanies in the USA. In 2006 application of the BioPark for Bio­Regio Regensburg to be accepted as a biotech network in the federalinitiative “Competency Networks Germany” was successful. In2008 BioPark Regensburg was awarded “Landmark” by the FederalInitiative “Germany – Land of Ideas”. In 2008 the research network “BayImmuNet” has commenced its activities inRegensburg. The goal is the development of new therapies and medicines for infectious diseases,tumor diseases, autoimmune and rheumatic diseases.In 2011 followed the establishment of Pro-Retina, a new endowed chair for retina researchUniversity Hospital Regensburgand development of novel diagnostic methods for the prevention of blindness. Additional theCentre for Interventional Immunology (GKC) started up and links existing medical and scientificexcellence in the field of immunotherapy and transplantation medicine in East Bavaria. The GKCintends to later branch out as an external university institution and in the long term become establishedas the first institute of the Leibniz Association in Regensburg.­10

In regular location analyses, the potential for development of Bio­Regio Regensburg has beenanalyzed and founded the Agency IA-Biotech to realize this. In the applied fields of molecular diagnostics andbiochips, as well as biofunctional surfaces, regional companies in the areas from the glass industry,engineering, electronic technology, textiles and nutrition were brought together via workshopswith the companies from BioRegio Regensburg. Through this new network spanning thesetechnologies, the dynamic in the Cluster was able to be increased by a further 11 regionalcompanies. A further extension is the Sensor Technology cluster platform. In additionto the successful company PreSens Precision Sensing GmbH (Chemo- and Biosensors),now the cluster management of the Sensor Technology Strategic partnership islocated in the BioPark and founded in 2009 the new network optical technologies inphotodynamic. The goal is to implement medical applictions such as tumour dignosticsor tumor control with the aid of novel optical technologies.­11
