Vascular surgery and interventional radiology SSUWorkplace-based assessment requirementsTrainees must complete two mandatory mini clinical evaluation exercise (mini-CEX) assessments tofinish this specialised study unit.Trainees are also required to select and complete a minimum total of 6 case-based discussions(CbDs) from the specialised study units (SSU Optional CbDs), 2 of which must be done in basictraining and 4 in advanced training. One of these may come from the Vascular surgery andinterventional radiology SSU.2

Vascular surgery and interventional radiology SSULearning outcomes – ANZCA Roles in PracticeThe non-medical expert roles of communication, collaboration, manager, health advocate, scholarand professional are a part of all aspects of the clinical fundamentals and specialised study units andshould be incorporated into the teaching and assessment of the Vascular surgery and interventionalradiology SSU.These learning outcomes are relatively generic in their nature and as such have been organised inone location – the ANZCA Roles in Practice. For details and reference these may be found in SectionOne of the Anaesthesia Training Program Curriculum Document available online through the ANZCAwebsite.Examples of how these may be directly applied to this SSU are provided below.7


Vascular surgery and interventional radiology SSUSpecialised Study Unit Review (SSUR)It is your role as supervisor of the Vascular surgery and interventional radiology SSU to review withthe trainee their progress against the required WBAs and VOP Cases and/or Procedures for this SSU.If incomplete you should help them identify the outstanding requirements that they will need tomeet during future clinical placements. If there are any issues with progress this should also bediscussed with the trainee and SOT as early as possible and well before the end of the clinicalplacement.If the trainee has met all the requirements of the SSU they will then provide you with the evidencethrough access to their training record on the Training Portfolio System (TPS). You will provide afeedback summary and complete and submit the online SSU Review Form. This is verified by the SOTelectronically and credit for the SSU given to the trainee.8
