INTRODUCTION 11tion with Krishna, the most intense conception ofpain is separation from Krishna. Yet the pain feltfrom Krishna’s separation is far more intense thanthe ecstasy felt from His association. ßrÈmanMahÅprabhu says, “Can’t you understand thepainful situation you are in? Your senses must haveall been destroyed? Otherwise you would have diedfrom the pain of separation from Krishna. It isinconceivable. We belong to Him wholesale. He isall in all to us, but we can’t see Him. We areforcibly separated from Him. How can we toleratethis?” And Bhaktivinoda †hÅkura once said, “Ican’t tolerate separation from Krishna any longer. Ican go on for only three or four more days, andthen I shall have to leave this body.”To love Krishna means that we shall have to “dieto live.” In the beginning divine love seems like lava,death, but really it is nectar, life. Many persons in thisordinary world are also frustrated in love. They sometimesgo mad and commit suicide because they can’ttolerate the pain. But the pain which comes with separationfrom Krishna, although compared with lava, isnot injurious like lava. KavirÅja GoswÅmÈ explains:bahye vi›ajvÅla hayabhitore ÅnandamÅya,kÂ›â premara adbhuta carite“The wonderful characteristic of divine love of
12 THE GOLDEN VOLCANOKrishna is that although externally, it works like fierylava, internally it is like sweet nectar that fills theheart with the greatest joy.”Although he felt the greatest pain of separationfrom Krishna, still, within His heart, ßrÈ ChaitanyaMahÅprabhu experienced the deepest ecstatic joy.The ecstatic symptoms manifested by ßrÈ ChaitanyaMahÅprabhu have never been found in the historyof the world or even expressed in any scripture. InHim, we find the highest conception of theUltimate Reality. This is explained in my PremaDhÅma Deva Stotram (66):Åtma-siddha-sÅva lÈlÅ-pËrna-saukhya-lak›ana˜svÅnubhÅva-matta-nÂtya-kÈrtanÅtma-vanÊanamadvayaika-lak›ya-pËrâ-tattva-tat-parÅtpara˜prema-dhÅma-devam-eva naumi gaura-sundaram“This is the all-conquering conclusion. The highest conceptionof the Ultimate Reality must also be the highestform of ananda, ecstasy. ßrÈ Chaitanya MahÅprabhu isKrishna, ecstasy Himself, tasting His own sweetness anddancing in ecstatic joy. His own Holy Name is the causeof His ecstasy, expressed as dancing, and the Holy Nameis the effect of His ecstasy, expressed as chanting. Thecause is the effect. The dynamo is creating ecstatic energywhich makes Him dance, and His chanting distributesthat ecstasy to others.”In this way, by every word from His lotus mouth
