INTRODUCTIONßrÈ Chaitanya MahÅprabhu preached the fullfledgedtheistic conception given in ßrÈmad-BhÅgavatam. ßrÈmad-BhÅgavatam mainly deals withthe comparative study of theism and the ontology ofKrishna consciousness. It surpasses all other Vedicliterature, even the PurÅâs. The Brahma-vaivartaPurÅâ and Padma PurÅâ represent the importanceof devotion to Krishna through narration and historyto some extent, but fall short of the philosophicaland ontological standard set by the MahÅpurÅâ,ßrÈmad-BhÅgavatam. ßrÈmad-BhÅgavatam can satisfy allVedantic scholars, for it represents Krishna consciousnessin its fullest dignity. ßrÈmad-BhÅgavatamexpounds as the highest attainment of theism notconsciousness, intelligence, or ontology, but ecstasy,beauty, and harmony—rasa. In ßrÈmad-BhÅgavatam,rasa is all-important. It is a unique treatise, for ittakes theism from the plane of intellectual juggleryto the domain of rasa.7
8 THE GOLDEN VOLCANOI once began writing a book which was to be asummary study of the eighteen thousand verse ßrÈmad-BhÅgavatam. Bhaktivinoda †hÅkura condensed thewhole BhÅgavata principle into one thousand versesin his BhÅgavatÅrka-marÈci-mÅlÅ. I had a mind toconsolidate it even more, to represent it within threehundred verses. I began that book, but could not finishit.ßrÈmad-BhÅgavatam is a vast treatise in theSanskrit language, filled with essential information,historical reference, and expositions on the majorschools of philosophy. In ßrÈmad-BhÅgavatam, manyminor points of history and geography are also mentionedwhich, although nonessential, support itsconclusions. Whatever is unnecessary in ßrÈmad-BhÅgavatam is eliminated when its meaning reachesits purest and most intensified glory in the teachingsof ßrÈ Chaitanya MahÅprabhu. So, if we are to considerthe very gist of ßrÈmad-BhÅgavatam, we muststudy the life and precepts of ßrÈ ChaitanyaMahÅprabhu. Just as the teachings of the greatauthor of ßrÈmad-BhÅgavatam, ßrÈla VyÅsadeva, werepercolated by the realizations of ßukadevaGoswÅmÈ, the essence of ßrÈmad-BhÅgavatam hasbeen percolated by the life and precepts of ßrÈChaitanya MahÅprabhu.Therefore, because the teachings of ßrÈmanMahÅprabhu represent the gist of ßrÈmad-BhÅgavatam,
