This will not affect your registration with theStudent <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>.Likewise, if you are not registered with us forany reason, we can still see you in an emergency asan immediately necessary patient, if you cannot getto your own Doctor.NursesThe Nurses are very experienced and are availableto help on a wide range of medical problems andminor illnesses including:■ Sore Throats■ Eye infections■ Ear infections■ Skin infections■ CystitisPlus■ Health promotion■ Travel & Influenza vaccinations■ Contraception■ Cervical Smears■ Asthma and Diabetes checks■ Sexual Health ScreeningCounsellingThe Doctors and Nurses at the Student <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>work closely with the University CounsellingService.If you need help, you can seek it directly from theCounselling Service or your Doctor or Nurse maysuggest it to you.All information will be treated as confidential.Some Advice for New StudentsYour vaccinations should be up to date beforecoming to university. It is strongly recommendedthat you have had Meningitis C and 2 vaccinationsfor Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR). Yourcurrent Practice Nurse will be able to advise you.Please bring with you details of all your vaccinationswith you.If you are on regular medication, eg. for Diabetes,Asthma or Epilepsy, please bring sufficient suppliesto last you for the first month or so at college. Also,if you are on the oral contraceptive pill, please bringenough for your first month.If you change your address or mobile/contactnumber please make sure you notify us.Some Helpful HintsMinor ailments such as sore throats, coughs, coldsand flu symptoms are common at the start of theacademic year. These complaints should be treatedby you with simple medication such as paracetamol,aspirin or cough linctus (and by drinking plenty offluids). If however, after 3 days you are still unwell,you should seek treatment at the <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Centre</strong>.To help you treat yourself, we suggest you have thefollowing 'first aid kit' available.
