The <strong>in</strong>ternationalevent, <strong>the</strong> first of its k<strong>in</strong>d, was presidedover by Dr. Ede Surya Darmawan, <strong>the</strong>Vice Dean from <strong>the</strong> Faculty of PublicHealth, <strong>University</strong> of Indonesia and Dr.Ratna Rosita, Secretary General ofM<strong>in</strong>ister of Health, Indonesia.From 12 th - 13 th December 2012, <strong>the</strong> ASEAN Institute for Health Development (AIHD),<strong>Mahidol</strong> <strong>University</strong> was <strong>the</strong> proud host of <strong>the</strong> International Conference - The First InternationalConference on Health Equity <strong>in</strong> Asia 2012, also known as ‘COHEA 2012’.In summary, COHEA 2012 provideddelegates from a wide-range ofdiscipl<strong>in</strong>es an opportunity to explore <strong>the</strong>relationship between people’slivelihoods and <strong>the</strong>ir physicalsurround<strong>in</strong>gs.Special guests <strong>in</strong>cluded Dr. AliGufron, <strong>the</strong> Vice M<strong>in</strong>ister of Health,Indonesia and Mr. Robert Yates,Economist and WHO representative,who delivered lectures on UniversalHealth Coverage and Health Equity <strong>in</strong>Sou<strong>the</strong>ast Asia respectively. As <strong>the</strong> second largesteconomy <strong>in</strong> ASEAN, <strong>Thailand</strong> has aprom<strong>in</strong>ent role <strong>in</strong> trade between <strong>the</strong> tworegions. This issue, amongst manyo<strong>the</strong>rs, was exam<strong>in</strong>ed at a one-daysem<strong>in</strong>ar ‘The 4 th <strong>Mahidol</strong> - IndianEmbassy Annual Sem<strong>in</strong>ar on IndianIdeas and Thoughts’ held at <strong>the</strong>Research Institute for Languages andCultures of Asia (RILCA), <strong>Mahidol</strong><strong>University</strong> on 12th December 2012.Under <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me ‘India – ASEAN:Situat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Thailand</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Grow<strong>in</strong>g NewEconomic Opportunities’, highlights of<strong>the</strong> sem<strong>in</strong>ar <strong>in</strong>cluded a keynote addressby Dr. Niti Bhas<strong>in</strong> from <strong>the</strong> Delhi Schoolof Economics - a lead<strong>in</strong>g Indianeconomist and commerce analyst andan Interactive Group session, attendedby Thai government and traderepresentatives. There were also severalcultural performances - part of amonth-long exhibition promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ASEAN-INDIA-THAILAND network.Welcome speech by Prof. Rajata Rajatanav<strong>in</strong>,President of <strong>Mahidol</strong> <strong>University</strong>The sem<strong>in</strong>ar also marked <strong>the</strong> officialrelease of a new book by BhikkhuniDhammananda, a renowned author <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> field of human rights, gender issuesand <strong>the</strong> monastic order. The book,entitled ‘Letters from India 1962-1965’ isedited by Assoc. Prof. Dr. AmarjivaLochan from Delhi <strong>University</strong> and is acollection of correspondence by Ms.Dhammananda written dur<strong>in</strong>g her timeas a young student <strong>in</strong> India. H.E. Mr. AnilWadhwa, Ambassador of India to<strong>Thailand</strong>, formally released <strong>the</strong>publication and read a passage to <strong>the</strong>assembled audience.8 • Spectrum | Vol.20, No. 1 | January - April 2013
