Pr<strong>in</strong>cess Maha Chakri Sir<strong>in</strong>dhornto preside over <strong>the</strong> presentationceremony, which took place at <strong>the</strong>Chakri Throne Hall, Bangkok on30 th January 2013.This year <strong>the</strong> achievements of SirMichael David Rawl<strong>in</strong>s and Dr. UcheVeronica Amazigo were recognized,both of whom have dedicated <strong>the</strong>ircareers to medical and public healthservices, and were awarded <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>in</strong>ce<strong>Mahidol</strong> Award <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field of Medic<strong>in</strong>eand Public Health respectively.Sir Michael is widely acknowledgedas <strong>the</strong> pioneer <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> practice ofscientific and cl<strong>in</strong>ical-based evidence <strong>in</strong>evaluat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> efficacy of drugs,equipment and medical procedures. In1999, he established <strong>the</strong> NationalInstitute for Health and Cl<strong>in</strong>icalSir Michael David Rawl<strong>in</strong>s (front row, 2 nd from left) andDr. Uche Veronica Amazigo ( front row, 2 nd from right) ata celebratory luncheon hosted by <strong>Mahidol</strong> <strong>University</strong>.Excellence (NICE), which cont<strong>in</strong>ues toaffect medical decision makersworldwide, and improve <strong>the</strong> healthcareof millions of people.Dr. Amazigo is <strong>the</strong> world’s leader <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction and use of communitydirectedtreatment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> control ofdiseases (L<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g research withmanagement strategies; <strong>the</strong>rebyempower<strong>in</strong>g communities to distributemedic<strong>in</strong>e to affected populations).This approach has been particularlysuccessful <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> control of riverbl<strong>in</strong>dness (Onchocerciasis) and hashelped streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> health systems of500,000 communities across <strong>the</strong> 19countries covered by <strong>the</strong> AfricanProgramme on Onchocerciasis.As a result, it is estimated that 90million people will have receivedtreatment and 40,000 people wil havebeen prevented from develop<strong>in</strong>g thisdisease by 2015. Community-directedtreatment is now used to control o<strong>the</strong>rdiseases and has had major impacts <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> provision of essential healthcareservices throughout Africa. »NewsStudents Reflect Upon Their Road TripExperienceMy curiosity brought me to jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>Mahidol</strong><strong>University</strong>’s very first ASEAN Trip, and as aresult, I discovered lots of th<strong>in</strong>gs that I neverknew about. Through my eyes, I saw bothsimilarities and differences throughout <strong>the</strong>region. For example, <strong>in</strong> Cambodia, we sharesome similar words and aspects of our culture.However, <strong>in</strong> Vietnam we don’t share any common words as ourcultures are totally different. So I put extra effort <strong>in</strong>to try<strong>in</strong>g tounderstand more about both countries. When I understood, Irealized <strong>the</strong> importance of open<strong>in</strong>g our m<strong>in</strong>ds to o<strong>the</strong>r cultures.S<strong>in</strong>ce we will be liv<strong>in</strong>g with cultural differences with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ASEANCommunity <strong>in</strong> 2015, we have to try to understand each o<strong>the</strong>r.Though this we will achieve peace and prosperity for <strong>the</strong> community.I believe that we are strong when we are connected!As I am a new graduate, I see myself work<strong>in</strong>g and cooperat<strong>in</strong>gwith people from ASEAN countries. Good nutrition, especially <strong>in</strong> earlychildhood, is vital, as it allows peopleto grow and develop; <strong>in</strong> fact, it <strong>in</strong>fluencesmany, if not all aspects of a person’seventual livelihood. Unfortunately, due to<strong>the</strong> effects of poor nutrition, aroundone-third of <strong>the</strong> world’s children still neverrealize <strong>the</strong>ir full potential. Invest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>nutrition, particularly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1,000 dayswhich run from pregnancy to <strong>the</strong> age oftwo, is <strong>the</strong>refore a cost-effective way ofsupport<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> future.Dur<strong>in</strong>g early 2010, <strong>Mahidol</strong> <strong>University</strong>jo<strong>in</strong>ed over 100 <strong>in</strong>ternational organizationsto endorse <strong>the</strong> Policy Brief onScal<strong>in</strong>g Up Nutrition. The policy briefencouraged a collective effort of governments,organisations and <strong>in</strong>dividuals towork toge<strong>the</strong>r for an end to hunger andunder-nutrition <strong>in</strong> all its forms. Recogniz<strong>in</strong>gthis, <strong>the</strong> Scal<strong>in</strong>g Up Nutrition (SUN)Movement aims to support nationalleadership and collective action <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>scal<strong>in</strong>g-up of successful approaches toimproved nutrition (implement<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m ona larger, often national-scale). Individual countries <strong>the</strong>nset <strong>the</strong>ir own targets, depend<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong>irpriorities with regard to improv<strong>in</strong>gnutritional status of mo<strong>the</strong>rs and childrenthrough collective efforts of differentsectors. All countries share <strong>the</strong> commonaim of improv<strong>in</strong>g nutrition <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mostsusta<strong>in</strong>able manner. Key to thisapproach is that any policy developedshould be done so with <strong>the</strong> cooperationof national stakeholders (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>gcommunities, donors, private entities,and national and <strong>in</strong>ternational agenciesor NGOs), <strong>the</strong>reby creat<strong>in</strong>g a commonframework for results whereuponstakeholder consensus leads tocountries identify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir own specifictargets. In addition, <strong>the</strong> SUN movementprovides a platform through whichstakeholders can share lessons learnedand new knowledge with those <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rmember states and organizations. F<strong>in</strong>ally,SUN also <strong>in</strong>tends to assist countries <strong>in</strong>calculat<strong>in</strong>g how much it will cost toachieve <strong>the</strong>se targets, an activity that isvital <strong>in</strong> leverag<strong>in</strong>g resources.The Role of UniversitiesOutl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> many roles that a globaluniversity such as <strong>Mahidol</strong> <strong>University</strong>could contribute with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> movement,SUN representatives expla<strong>in</strong>ed howuniversities could provide technicalassistance or expertise for capacitydevelopment and track<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> efficiencyof policy implementation. They could alsohelp <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cost<strong>in</strong>g process or <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>collection of lessons learned and bestpractices. They can act as a centre ofknowledge through quality research andpolicy-relevant sciences.
