VARSITY MIDDLE SCHOOL GOT OFF TO A ROCKYSTART TO THE SEASONThe varsity middle school team started the season off with a few jitters.They lost their first game 5-25 to a great North Oldhamteam. The second game however showed the jitters were fading awayand they were ready to play and can have a great season. They lostthe second game 18-25 but they put forth a great effort and battleduntil the very end.CAL 6TH GRADE VOLLEYBALL WINS FIRST GAME OF THE SEASONThe 6th grade volleyball team opened its season with a win on Thursday, August 16th. The girls came outready to play against North Oldham Middle School. Despite the nerves that come with the first game of theirmiddle school careers, the team was able to take the win in two sets (21-18 and 21-10).North Oldham did not hand CAL the victory, they had to work for the win. The first set was a real nail biterwith the score going back and forth. Strong digs by Gracie Shadburne, Olivia Curran and Heather Skidmorekept the Centurions in the game. Defensive saves and blocks by Isabel Clem and Kathryn Chandler assuredthe team got the points they needed. By the second set, CAL was feeling more comfortable on the court, andtook the win confidently. In the end, it proved to be a game for the team that could execute theirserves. Emily Amin, Casey Mann and Megan Thompson came out strong and consistent with their serves onThursday. TWO WEEKS; TWO DIFFERENT OUTCOMESCAL’s 3 rd and 4 th football team opened their season on August 11 th at J-Town HS against the Louisville Raiders.CAL kicked-off to the Raiders to open the game. After stoppingthe Raiders on 4 th down CAL took over just inside its own 40yard line. A lost fumble on second down gave the ball back tothe Raiders on CAL’s 35 yard line. The Raiders’ first two snapsresulted in tackles for loss. After a modest gain on 4 th down,CAL’s Brandt Babin came up with another tackle for loss to giveCAL the ball on its own 30. At the end of one quarter the scorewas 0-0.CAL started the second quarter with its second offensive possession. After a fumble and recovery, the offensecould only muster short gains and turned the ball back over to the Raiders on CAL’s 30 yard line.With 3:40 in the 1 st half, 3 stops by the defense led to a 4 th down. The Raiders went for it, only to fumble andhave it recovered by William Paar. The offense, again, could only come up with modest gains and rain theclock out to close the first half. Score 0-0.The Raiders kicked to open the second half and Brock Ruckreigel scooped up the ball and carried all the wayinside the Raiders’ 50 yard line. After three consecutive runs for loss, the offense’s modest gain on 4 th downwas not enough and the Raider’s took over on the CAL 42.With the defense still walking out of the huddle and not set when the officials started the play, the Raiders’QB snapped it quickly and easily ran for a big score as the players could only watch. The extra point was nogood and with 5:06 left in the 3 rd the Raiders went up 6-0.The offense started its next drive on the 27 and went threeand out.
