From the Chairman of the Board
Dear Friends,
For music lovers worldwide, Carnegie Hall is the ultimate musical destination,
an international byword for excellence, and an institution whose rich
history chronicles the defi ning moments of so many of the world’s most
admired and beloved artists. For the leadership of this institution, this
legacy provides an enjoyable yet formidable challenge, as we work each
season to devise strategies that build upon the past in imaginative ways
and create essential new pathways for growth.
In many respects, embracing this challenge successfully was a hallmark of Carnegie Hall’s 2006–2007 season, as
the Board and staff took major steps forward in formulating plans to ensure that Carnegie Hall remain a beacon
of excellence and innovation for future generations of music lovers. Key to this process has been the creation of
public and private partnerships that are enabling Carnegie Hall to undertake bold new programmatic initiatives
on a much grander scale than was ever possible before.
Evidence of this can be seen in our January 2007 launch of The Academy—a program of Carnegie
Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department
of Education. Our aspirations for this program, described more fully later on in this Annual Report, are
to play a central part in transforming the fi eld of music education on a national level. Last season, we also
conceived ambitious plans for annual thematic festivals, beginning in 2007–2008 with Berlin in Lights, which
offer audiences the opportunity to undertake journeys of discovery across a broad cultural canvas, not only
through concerts at Carnegie Hall but also through an extraordinary range of artistic and educational experiences
at partner institutions throughout New York City. In each of these efforts, our goal is simple—to make certain
that Carnegie Hall remains a growing and vibrant institution, both attuned and responsive to the evolving needs
of artists and audiences.
The successful pursuit of this goal is predicated upon the effort, encouragement, and generosity of numerous
individuals. In particular, I would like to thank my colleagues on the Board of Trustees, whose devotion and
generosity to Carnegie Hall continue to set a model for non-profi t organizations to follow. I also salute departing
Trustees Sir Deryck Maughan and Alan G. Weiler for their exemplary service, and welcome new Trustees Nicola
Bulgari, Edward C. Forst, Marina Kellen French, Mark E. Kingdon, Lang Lang, and Sir Howard Stringer. It is with
great pleasure that all of us at Carnegie Hall congratulate Ralph M. Baruch, Felix G. Rohatyn, and
Nancy S. Rosenfi eld on their election as lifetime Honorary Trustees, and it is with great sadness that we mourn
the passing of longtime Honorary Trustees Brooke Astor and Kitty Carlisle Hart.
To our many friends in the city, state, and federal government, I express heartfelt appreciation for their continued
support. I extend a warm welcome back to Bank of America—returning as Carnegie Hall’s season sponsor—
whose generous support has been critical in helping to bring great music to our stages. And to the dedicated
staff, led by Clive Gillinson, I offer a round of applause for its unfailing effort, creativity, and commitment. Most of
all, my greatest thanks go to you, our generous donors and loyal audiences, whose love of music and dedication
to this wonderful house of music provide the rationale for everything that we do.
This is a stimulating period for all of us at Carnegie Hall as we build upon its exciting past to create a more exciting
future. It promises to be a remarkable journey, and as we embark upon it, we look forward to the pleasure
of your company every step of the way.
Sincerely,
Sanford I. Weill
Chairman of the Board
From the Executive
and Artistic Director
Dear Friends,
With our 2006–2007 season, Carnegie Hall reaffi rmed its longstanding
core values of musical excellence, diversity of programming, and integration
of education and artistic missions, while also expanding the scope
and range of its activities and developing innovative new initiatives that
brought great music to an increasing number of people.
Central to Carnegie Hall’s existence is its richly varied concert schedule, packed with performances by the world’s
greatest artists. Offering the best in music in all its forms—classical, jazz, world, folk, and pop—the 2006–2007 season
also pointed to the future with 20 Carnegie Hall commissions by composers ranging from leading fi gures such
as Elliott Carter, Kaija Saariaho, and John Adams to ten emerging composers at the start of their careers. It was a
year of great programmatic exploration, including 70th-birthday tributes to Steve Reich and highly personal Perspectives
concerts with Pierre-Laurent Aimard, David Byrne, Thomas Quasthoff, and the Emerson String Quartet. After
four memorable years as the holder of Carnegie Hall’s Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair, it was also time
to thank our friend John Adams for sharing his inventive and imaginative musical viewpoints with our audiences.
The Weill Music Institute continued to play a central role in making extraordinary music accessible to as many people
as possible with its multifaceted education programs. Serving audiences from all walks of life, The Weill Music
Institute connected high school students with their counterparts in Africa as part of a yearlong Global Encounters focus
on the music of Mali; provided talented young musicians with access to world-class artists like Paquito D’Rivera,
Yo-Yo Ma, Osvaldo Golijov, and Dawn Upshaw through Professional Training Workshops; engaged tens of
thousands of children nationwide in active music-making through LinkUP! programs; and reached residents
throughout the city through Neighborhood Concerts. In the coming year, these programs will expand their reach
internationally as we embark on our new partnership with Tokyo’s Suntory Hall.
The creation of The Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute
in partnership with the New York City Department of Education—was a major accomplishment in 2006–2007.
Offering two-year fellowships to the fi nest young post-graduate musicians from around the US, The Academy has
provided extensive performance opportunities and intensive training in the area of music education to the fi nest
young post-graduate musicians from around the United States, refl ecting our belief that the artist of tomorrow will
require both the ability to perform at the highest level and the capacity to give back to the community. Now in its
fi rst full season, this program is already attracting national attention. We are thrilled at the enthusiastic response
we have received from our fi rst class of fellows and the productive relationships they have developed with teachers
and students throughout New York City’s public school system, creating opportunities to spark interest in music in
young people throughout our city.
I am always moved by the ongoing dedication of so many people—artists, audiences, volunteers, and staff—who
bring the musical legacy of Carnegie Hall to life each day. Looking ahead, we will continue to build on Carnegie
Hall’s historic strengths, seeking to develop ever more creative and compelling musical journeys for our audiences.
Most notably, the 2007–2008 season’s Berlin in Lights represents the fi rst of what will be many major international
festivals at Carnegie Hall. Each festival will have its own theme, drawing upon our artistic and educational resources
to create large-scale programming initiatives, including collaborations with leading New York cultural institutions.
With its rich history, loyal audiences, access to the world’s greatest artists, and deep commitment to its public mission
and extraordinary education programs, I have no doubt that Carnegie Hall is on the right track as it proceeds
through the 21st century.
We look forward to having you with us as we enter another exciting year of musical excellence and exploration.
Sincerely,
Clive Gillinson
Executive and Artistic Director
2006–2007 Concert Season

2006–2007
Concert Season
In its 116th season, Carnegie Hall continued to expand its programming, with more
than 200 diverse performances offered by some of the fi nest musicians from around
the world, ranging from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra to the Mongolian
Buryat Band, from Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra to Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
Carnegie Hall again showed its strong commitment to the future of music. Interspersed
throughout the 2006–2007 season were performances of 20 Carnegie Hall
commissions by both well-established fi gures and talented young artists. Many of
the commissions were intertwined with the educational activities of The Weill Music
Institute, which included among its programs eight Professional Training Workshops
that spanned jazz, world, and classical music.
In October, Carnegie Hall took part in Steve Reich @ 70, a monthlong citywide
tribute to composer Steve Reich in honor of his 70th birthday. Carnegie Hall’s
contributions to this cross-institutional festival included a Making Music concert, a
Professional Training Workshop, symposiums, and other performances of Reich’s
most compelling works, collectively showcasing his talents as a composer, teacher,
and performer.
Carnegie Hall also celebrated John Adams’s 60th birthday throughout the year,
a season that marked his fourth and fi nal year as holder of the Richard and
Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair. An all-Adams program with the American
Composers Orchestra and Adams’s third annual genre-bending In Your Ear festival
provided audiences with adventurous and engaging musical experiences.
At the heart of the season, Carnegie Hall’s Perspectives artists—pianist Pierre-
Laurent Aimard, singer-songwriter David Byrne, bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff,
and the Emerson String Quartet—were invited to share their musical interests
and viewpoints in the form of specially created personal concerts and workshops.
Also among the season highlights were performances by Daniel Barenboim, both
as pianist and conductor, marking the 50th anniversary of his Carnegie Hall debut,
as well as a three-day survey of Shostakovich’s song cycles.
Providing a grand fi nale to Carnegie Hall’s season was an eight-concert traversal of
the complete Beethoven string quartets by the Emerson String Quartet. Concerts
and master classes by the Emerson String Quartet, pre-concert recitals by other artists,
and a special Discovery Day offered a stimulating look at these landmark works,
their infl uences, and the works they infl uenced. The programming also juxtaposed
Beethoven’s quartets with complementary repertoire drawn from the last two and
a half centuries and extending to the present day with a world premiere commissioned
by The Carnegie Hall Corporation.

The Weill Music Institute
at Carnegie Hall
This year, The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall continued to expand the range
of its programs, reaching over 100,000 children, students, teachers, parents, young
music professionals, and adults in the New York City metropolitan area, across the
United States, and around the world.
The 2006–2007 season marked the fi rst full year of the Perelman American Roots
program, which combines music and social studies for middle school students. Having
begun with a small pilot group, the program now enjoys the participation of ten
schools. A similar growth in participation marked Carnegie Hall’s LinkUP! Program,
which reached a record number of listeners this season—with over 20,000 students,
parents, and teachers attending eight concerts at the Hall.
Global Encounters concerts—refl ecting The Weill Music Institute’s goal of engaging
diverse populations and musical traditions—focused on the musical traditions of
Mali, in West Africa, and were integrated with free Neighborhood Concerts outside
the Hall. Featured Malian artists included renowned griot singer Abdoulaye Diabaté,
balafon virtuoso Neba Solo, and chanteuse Oumou Sangare. Complementing these
activities was a cultural-exchange and distance learning event that connected New
York City high school students with their counterparts in Bamako, Mali, via satellite
videoconference.
Finally, among the season’s highlights was the fi rst Professional Training Workshop
focusing on Latin jazz, featuring the Cuban reed master and composer Paquito
D’Rivera along with his band. Professional Training Workshops also partnered with
the Bard College Conservatory for a workshop with composer Osvaldo Golijov and
soprano Dawn Upshaw. Eight young composers and 12 singers took part in this
extensive, two-part workshop, which resulted in a record number of commissioned
new works.

CarnegieKids concerts introduce preschool children (aged
3–6) to basic musical concepts as well as the four instrument
families of the orchestra. The focus of this past
season was on the string and woodwind families. In fall
2006 and spring 2007, the 45-minute presentations in
Carnegie Hall’s Kaplan Space featured songs, music,
instrument demonstrations, and an animated fi lm featuring
live music. Approximately 6,112 children and adults
attended these events.
MUSICAL EXPLORERS
The Musical Explorers program introduces second- and
third-grade students to the instrument families of the
orchestra through reading, composing, singing, and
playing music. Teachers and students use a specially
designed curriculum during the school year and end each
unit with an interactive concert in Zankel Hall.
In its fourth season, Musical Explorers focused on the percussion
and the woodwind instrument families. The fall
concerts introduced 3,020 students and 43 teachers to the
percussion family, and the spring concerts introduced 3,237
students and 58 teachers to the woodwind family.
LINKUP!
The 2006–2007 season marked the 22nd year of LinkUP!,
which teaches students in grades 4–6 the basic elements
of music through reading, writing, composing, listening,
and performing. Participating students received their own
workbooks, CDs, and recorders. At the end of the school
year, teachers and students came to Carnegie Hall for an
interactive concert that explored melody (which they had
studied throughout the year), playing recorders and singing
along with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. Approximately
18,500 students and 350 teachers participated.
In the 2006–2007 season, The Weill Music Institute continued
to bring the LinkUP! program to communities nationwide,
supporting in-depth collaborations among orchestras,
university music schools, statewide arts organizations, and
local area teachers and students. Teachers from Hawaii to
Mississippi received professional development opportunities
with Carnegie Hall staff, along with recorders, workbooks,
and CDs; their students performed in a LinkUP! concert in
their community from March to May 2007. Over 26,000
students and teachers participated this season.
The Blues and the Great Migration
In the 2006–2007 season, Perelman American Roots
expanded to ten schools, with over 300 students participating.
The program is founded on the belief that studying
various strains of traditional American music can enrich a
student’s understanding of American history, culture, and
society. Teachers receive curriculum guides and participate
in a Professional Development Workshop. In this, its second
year, the program used the blues to examine the “Great Migration”
of African Americans from the rural South to cities
in the North and West that began during World War I.
In addition to classroom instruction from their teachers,
students worked with teaching artist and blues musician
Toby Walker, writing blues lyrics and songs. The program
concluded with two concerts in Zankel Hall featuring blues
singer Shemekia Copeland.
GLOBAL ENCOUNTERS
May 8 and 9, 2007 | Zankel
Sounds of Mali
Focusing on a different region of the world each year, the
Global Encounters program integrates the study of global
music, history, and culture into high school social studies
and music classes. In 2006–2007, Global Encounters explored
the varied music and culture of Mali, West Africa,
concluding with four concerts by balafon virtuoso Neba
Solo and his ensemble on May 8 and 9. Prior to the concert,
teachers received training with classroom materials
in workshops at Carnegie Hall, and teaching artists visited
schools to further student learning within the curriculum.
Over 2,200 students from 31 public, magnet, and private
high schools citywide participated in the program.
DISTANCE LEARNING EVENT
December 19, 2006 | Zankel
From Bamako to the Bayou
The 2006–2007 Global Encounters program kicked off with
a distance learning event connecting New York high school
students and musicians with their counterparts in Bamako,
Mali, via satellite videoconference. During the event, musical
performances were supplemented by video segments
introducing geography and culture specifi c to each region,
and students took part in a question-and-answer session.
Malian singer Oumou Sangare traveled to New York, and
Louisiana native Terrance Simien traveled to Mali with his
zydeco band; hosting the event were performer and lecturer
Heather Maxwell in New York and actor Boubacar Diallo
in Bamako. Over 500 New York City public school students
attended the event in Zankel Hall, linked with nearly 300
students at the Centre Culturel Français in Bamako.

a yearlong educational program featuring a series
of rehearsals and a fi nal concert at Carnegie Hall, this year
focusing on Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms and Poulenc’s
Gloria. Participating choral directors were fl own to Salt Lake
City, Utah, for a professional development weekend with
Dr. Jessop, who later visited the selected high schools for
CARNEGIE ARNEGIE HALL / CITI NEIGHBORHOOD
CONCERT O C SSERIES S
October–December 2006 and March–June 2007
In its 31st season, the Neighborhood Concert Series collaborated
with museums, universities, and libraries; community,
cultural, and religious centers; and Police Athletic
League sites to produce nearly 75 free live-music presentations—with
music ranging from classical to salsa—in all fi ve
boroughs. The series also featured concerts specifi cally for
senior citizens and residents in city-run homeless shelters
as well as interactive concerts for preschoolers and for children
aged 7–14. Concerts by two Malian musicians—singer
Oumou Sangare and balafon virtuoso and blues vocalist
Shemekia Copeland—linked the themes of the secondary
school programs Global Encounters and Perelman American
Roots to the Neighborhood Concert Series.
SOUND INSIGHTS
Now in its third season, Sound Insights is a program for all
concertgoers, both music afi cionados and those wishing
to learn more. In 2006–2007, the program featured two
Discovery Concerts—multimedia presentations, affordably
priced, blending lively commentary and visual enhancements
with orchestral demonstration, allowing a broad
range of audience members to experience music making
in an innovative way. This season’s Discovery Concerts
featured in-depth explorations of Bartók’s The Miraculous
Mandarin with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra—led by
Pierre Boulez and joined by narrator Gerard McBurney—
and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 with the New World
Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas.
PROFESSIONAL TRAINING WORKSHOPS
Silk Road Ensemble | September 6–17, 2006
This workshop was designed to nurture the creation of new
work and mentor a new generation of musicians and composers
in the performance practices of the Silk Road region.
In the second of a two-part, two-year workshop, participants
explored relationships between musical tradition and
innovation. For this workshop, Carnegie Hall commissioned
four established composers—Hossein Alizadeh, Gabriela
Lena Frank, Osvaldo Golijov, and Evan Ziporyn—and two
emerging composers, Christopher Adler and Angel Lam, to
write works for indigenous Silk Road instruments. The Silk
Road Project also commissioned Jacqueline Kim and Dmitri
Yanov-Yanovsky to write new works. Sessions took place at
the Tanglewood Music Center and New York City, with performances
in Zankel Hall on September 16 and 17, 2006.
Reich on Reich: Steve Reich @ 70
October 13–19, 2006
During a six-day workshop, participants had the opportunity
to learn music directly from one of the most important composers
of our time—Steve Reich. As part of his 70th birthday
celebration, Reich led a workshop focusing on several of
his seminal works: Music for Pieces of Wood, Triple Quartet,
Sextet, and City Life. Conductor Brad Lubman, percussionists
Russell Hartenberger and Bob Becker, and violinist Elizabeth
Lim joined the composer in coaching the participants
in preparation for a performance of these works at Zankel
Hall on October 19, 2006.
The Carnegie Hall Choral Workshop
Helmuth Rilling: Johann Sebastian Bach’s
St. Matthew Passion | January 8–13, 2007
Founded in 1990 by the late Robert Shaw, the Carnegie Hall
Choral Workshop has become a highlight of Carnegie Hall’s
presentations and an anchor in The Weill Music Institute at
Carnegie Hall’s Professional Training Workshop series. Each
year’s event gathers choral directors and singers from around
the country to prepare a vocal masterwork. The singers are
selected through a competitive, nationwide application process,
with this year’s chorus hailing from 26 states, Canada,
England, Germany, Italy, and Puerto Rico. Helmuth Rilling,
renowned for his interpretations of Bach’s choral works, led
the performance of Bach’s great oratorio. Participants spent
the week in rehearsals with longtime Rilling collaborator
Kathy Romey, who selected and prepared the chorus.
27
The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall
Designed for professional musicians in all genres—with special emphasis on young artists—The Weill Music Institute’s Professional
Training Workshops offer a valuable opportunity for young musicians to be coached and trained by today’s master
artists in an intimate setting. The workshops cover a wide range of topics with an exceptional roster of internationally
renowned artists as faculty. All workshops lead to a public performance presented at Carnegie Hall. Participants are chosen
through a competitive application, including a taped audition. Workshops are open to auditors to observe.
Professional Training Workshops
Paquito D’Rivera: Latin Jazz Workshop
March 14–19, 2007
During a four-day Latin Jazz Workshop, participants had
the opportunity to learn music directly from Grammy
Award winner Paquito D’Rivera along with special guest
coaches percussionist Pernel Saturnino, bassist Oscar
Stagnaro, drummer Mark Walker, pianist Alon Yavnai, and
trumpeter-trombonist Diego Urcola. D’Rivera was also
joined for a lunchtime discussion with jazz commentator
Phil Schaap. Participants worked in private coaching sessions,
in small ensembles, and as a Big Band on arrangements
representing different Latin traditions in preparation
for a Zankel Hall performance on March 19, 2007.
Osvaldo Golijov and Dawn Upshaw Workshop
November 6–10, 2006
The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall, in partnership
with the Bard College Conservatory, presented a two-part
workshop co-led by composer Osvaldo Golijov and soprano
Dawn Upshaw. Carnegie Hall commissioned eight young
composers to write new works for voice and small ensemble.
Four of the singers in the workshop were selected through
an application process and eight from the inaugural class of
the graduate program in vocal arts at The Bard College Conservatory
of Music. This workshop ended with two concerts
in Weill Recital Hall on April 14 and 15.
Kronos Quartet: Signature Works | April 22–29, 2007
Kronos Quartet, drawing on its long career of expanding
the defi nition of the string quartet, led a six-day workshop
for string quartets, training young players on its signature
repertoire. Coaching four young quartets on works written
for Kronos by composers including Steve Reich, Terry Riley,
Alexandra du Bois, and John Zorn, the Quartet passed along
fi rsthand experiences of commissioning and performing
new works. The week’s schedule also included discussions
on artistic vision, collaborating with composers, and artistic
management. A culminating concert took place in Zankel
Hall on April 28.
The Emerson String Quartet Workshop:
Beethoven Quartets | May 14–24, 2007
As part of its Perspectives concerts and in connection with
its own complete Beethoven quartet cycle, the Emerson
String Quartet returned to Carnegie Hall to lead its third
workshop—this on Beethoven’s string quartets. Three ensembles
were selected to study these cornerstones of the
string quartet literature. As part of the week’s training sessions,
members of the Emerson String Quartet—violinist
Philip Setzer and cellist David Finckel—led a public master
class focusing on selections from the workshop repertoire.
The workshop’s culminating Young Artists Concerts took
place in Weill Recital Hall on May 23 and 24.

The Academy

The Academy
A program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School,
and The Weill Music Institute in partnership with
the New York City Department of Education
A major new initiative was launched in the 2006–2007 season: The Academy,
designed for outstanding post-graduate musicians embarking on their careers.
Initiated by Clive Gillinson, Carnegie Hall’s Executive and Artistic Director, and
Joseph Polisi, President of The Juilliard School, the program refl ects a shared belief
that the artist of tomorrow will require both the ability to perform at the highest
level and the capacity to give back to the community, inspiring the next generation
of musicians and music lovers. The innovative two-year fellowship combines
extensive performance opportunities with intensive music education training,
leading to hands-on experience working with students in New York City public
school classrooms.
Sixteen musician fellows selected from recent graduates of The Juilliard School
and participants in The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall’s Professional
Training Workshops took part in the pilot phase of The Academy from January
through June 2007. As Ensemble ACJW, fellows came together in seven concerts
and public master classes at Carnegie Hall and Juilliard. Fellows also went into
classrooms in four boroughs of the city, working with students on areas such as
instrumental teaching and general music knowledge, depending on the needs of
the school.

The Board and staff of Carnegie Hall express their deep appreciation to the many
individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies whose contributions,
totaling more than $21 million last season, constituted a vital affi rmation
of Carnegie Hall’s mission to present extraordinary music to the widest possible
audience and to foster the future of music through the cultivation of new works,
artists, and audiences.
Individual giving in 2006–2007 featured dynamic growth in the Patron program, refl
ecting new opportunities to support Carnegie Hall’s international festivals and The
Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music
Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education. Corporate
and Foundation giving also increased, highlighted respectively by the return of
Bank of America as season sponsor and by a major grant from the New York State
Music Fund for the commission and distribution of new works.
Special events generated signifi cant support for the Annual Fund last season with
their customary glamour and élan. The Opening Gala of Carnegie Hall’s 116th season
on October 4, 2006—always a highlight of New York’s social season—featured
The Cleveland Orchestra with soloist Dorothea Röschmann. On January 29, 2007,
the second annual Carnegie Hall Medal of Excellence Awards gala was held, honoring
Richard S. Fuld Jr., Chairman and CEO of Lehman Brothers. CNN News Journalist
(and amateur cellist) Paula Zahn hosted the Discovering Music luncheon on
May 8, 2007, at the Rainbow Room, raising funds for the education and professional
training programs of The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall. We are proud
to acknowledge, with heartfelt gratitude, the leadership of these events on
the following pages.
Carnegie Hall is grateful for its continuing partnership with the City of New York in
the care and operation of this publicly owned landmark building. City support includes
general operations, energy subsidy, and capital funding for major infrastructure
improvements. We thank in particular Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg; Kate D.
Levin, Commissioner of Cultural Affairs; Christine C. Quinn, New York City Council
Speaker; Dominic Recchia, Chair of the City Council Cultural Affairs Committee;
and Council Member Daniel R. Garodnick.
We also wish to acknowledge the state and federal governments for their ongoing
support of Carnegie Hall’s artistic presentations, education programs, and outreach
efforts, especially United States Senators Charles E. Schumer and Hillary Rodham
Clinton; Representative Carolyn B. Maloney; Governor Eliot Spitzer; State Senator
Liz Krueger; and State Assembly Member Richard N. Gottfried.
We extend our thanks to all of these partners in government for their extraordinary
work on behalf of this organization and the arts in our city and state.

Carnegie Hall’s programs were expanded in fi scal year
2007 with the implementation of the pilot phase of The
Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard
School, and The Weill Music Institute in partnership with
the New York City Department of Education—a two-year
fellowship for outstanding post-graduate musicians with
a dual emphasis on performance and education. In addition,
signifi cant groundwork was laid for major festivals—a
new and integral component to Carnegie Hall’s
future concert programming, designed to transform the
way in which audiences experience the performing arts
through cross-disciplinary exploration. This growth in
programming will present exciting new creative as well
as funding opportunities to management.
During fi scal year 2007, a total of 804 events took place in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage Stage, Weill Recit
al Hall, and Zankel Hall; this included both Carnegie Hall presentations and outside rentals. Carnegie Hall’s
own concert presentations totaled 194, up slightly from the previous year. Box-offi ce receipts and other
concert-related revenue increased to $14,976,000 from $14,160,000, which refl ects strong audience support
for Carnegie Hall’s concert presentations. Carnegie Hall also continued to experience steady demand
for its performance spaces from outside renters, who represented a wide range of musical genres.
Total annual operating and fundraising expenses were held to a modest increase of 2.4%—from $68.9
million in fi scal year 2006 to $70.6 million. Revenues from mission-related activities (concert presentations
and hall/building rentals) covered 50% of total annual expenses in fi scal year 2007.
Carnegie Hall continued to receive signifi cant annual donor support, totaling $24.8 million in fi scal year
2007, which covered 34% of total expenses. Annual contributions from individuals, corporations, and
foundations, including special-event revenues, increased 10% over the previous year’s level. The City of
New York, through the Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York City Council, again provided
$1.8 million in direct operating and energy support and also continued its signifi cant support for capital
projects, which Carnegie Hall acknowledges with gratitude.
Carnegie Hall’s balance sheet as of June 30, 2007, shows net assets of $399 million, up 18.2% from
June 30, 2006. Endowment investments increased 40% to $271 million, refl ecting a 22.7% return on
investments for fi scal year 2007 and the fulfi llment of pledges. Unfulfi lled pledges to the endowment
amounted to $30 million at fi scal year end.
Carnegie Hall’s fi nancial statements refl ect a high standard of stability and strength. Carnegie Hall’s
achievements would not be possible without the generous support of our donors and the dedication of
our staff—the keys to the sustained success of Carnegie Hall. We are deeply grateful.
