New York, where they took
part in what is now known
as the "Battle of Saratoga,"
in 1777, one year after the
outbreak of the American
Revolution.
Now, history fans,
descendants and residents
alike are invited to relive
this chapter of American
program, beginning
at 7 p.m. on Monday, May
18 at the United Church of
Christ, located 295 Atlantic
Avenue, North Hampton.
The program, which is
free and open to the public,
provides a "colorful history
of the North Hampton
militia," that "marched 318
miles to deliver critically
needed cannons and face
the most powerful army in
the world." It will be presented
by Jenny Landman
and Penny Holbert.
The Battle of Saratoga
is actually a generic reference
to a pair of battles that
occurred in September and
October, 1777, near Saratoga,
New York. The British
troops, led by General John
Burgoyne, were invading
from Quebec in an attempt
to march through New York
and, in essence, split New
England apart from the rest
of the colonies.
