Redundancy Switch 1:1 for IP ModemsRSCI1This version of a WORK Microwave 1:1 RedundancySwitch is specifically designed for IP modems and IPdemodulators. Besides this type also a standard1:1 Redundancy Switch RSCM1 is available, whichcan be used for modulators, demodulators andmodems with ASI transport stream inputs and outputs.The 1:1 Redundancy Switch RSCI1 includes for theGigabit Ethernet traffic interfaces a special type ofform C (SPDT) Ethernet switch with RJ45 interfaces,to allow switchover from one IP modem or IPdemodulator to the redundant one. This operatestogether with MAC address announcing methods,initiated automatically by the Gigabit Ethernet trafficinterfaces: The IP Modulator who detects that a port isa getting active (after switchover) sends a broadcastmessage that the MAC Address has changed.Equipment receiving this message, typically the nextrouter, needs to react to this message and update itsARP resolution table. This is in IPv4 an extension toRFC 826 and is called Gratuitous ARP. For IPv6 it isdefined by RFC 4861, clause 7.2.6 and is calledUnsolicited Neighbor Advertisement. The downtimeafter switchover is approximately less than 5 sec,typically only 2-3 sec and depends mainly on theEthernet auto negotiation time.Both IP modems or IP demodulators need to beconfigured in the same way, have different MACAddresses, but the same IP Address.For the RF transmit signal a transfer relay is included.For the RF receive signal also a transfer relay orpreferably a signal splitter is available, which can bemounted externally to the unit. For L-Band receivesignals also a special signal splitter with integratedswitch is available, which allows to provide DC and a22 kHz tone signal always from the active unit to theLNB.The 1:1 Redundancy Switch accepts alarm signalsfrom the two IP devices. The unit can operate inautomatic mode, were an automatic switchover to thestand by unit is performed upon detection of an alarmof the active unit.For configurations including a splitter on the receivesignal side, where both IP devices can receive the RFsignal, also monitoring of the receive conditions ofboth units is implemented. A switchover is performedin case that, with automatic mode enabled, the activeunit indicates a non consistent receive problemcompared to the standby unit.Also a manual switchover to the standby unit can beinitiated.The units can be controlled from the front panel orremotely via RS 232, RS422/485 or Ethernet.
