62 BUDDHIST DIPLOMACY: HISTORY AND STATUS QUOAuthor BiographyJuyan Zhang is Assistant Professor at the Department ofCommunication, University of Texas at San Antonio. He earned hisdoctoral degree from the School of Journalism, University of Missouriat Columbia. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree from School ofInternational Relations, Renmin University of China and his Master’sdegree from the School of International Studies, Beijing University.Dr. Zhang taught communication courses at Monmouth Universitybefore moving to the UTSA. He freelanced for Washington ObserverWeekly, an independent Chinese-language news magazine operatedby the International Media Division of the World Security Institute, athink tank based in Washington, D.C. Through first-hand interviews,he reported extensively on Sino-U.S. relations, American foreignpolicies, socioeconomic development, and trends in U.S. politics, aswell as their implications for the Asia/Pacific region. He has contributedto Nepal Monitor, an online semi-scholarly journal that is dedicatedto analysis of media and public affairs in Nepal. Before moving to theUnited States, he worked as a journalist and editor for China’s first andthe largest commercialized news group, the Guangzhou Daily Group.Dr. Zhang has published close to twenty scholarly articles onpublic diplomacy and international communication in peer-reviewedjournals such as Public Relations Review, Place Branding andPublic <strong>Diplomacy</strong>, and International Journal of Communication. Hepresented more than thirty articles at the conferences of InternationalCommunication Association, National Communication Associationand The Association for Education in Journalism and MassCommunication (AEJMC). Currently he is conducting a researchproject on engagement public diplomacy.As a CPD Contributing Scholar in Faith <strong>Diplomacy</strong>, Dr. Zhangfocuses his research on a project entitled “Exploring Resurgence of<strong>Buddhist</strong> <strong>Diplomacy</strong>.”
