62 BUDDHIST DIPLOMACY: HISTORY AND STATUS QUOAuthor BiographyJuyan Zhang is Assistant Professor at the Department ofCommunicati<strong>on</strong>, University of Texas at San Ant<strong>on</strong>io. He earned hisdoctoral degree from the School of Journalism, University of Missouriat Columbia. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree from School ofInternati<strong>on</strong>al Relati<strong>on</strong>s, Renmin University of China and his Master’sdegree from the School of Internati<strong>on</strong>al Studies, Beijing University.Dr. Zhang taught communicati<strong>on</strong> courses at M<strong>on</strong>mouth Universitybefore moving to the UTSA. He freelanced for Washingt<strong>on</strong> ObserverWeekly, an independent Chinese-language news magazine operatedby the Internati<strong>on</strong>al Media Divisi<strong>on</strong> of the World Security Institute, athink tank based in Washingt<strong>on</strong>, D.C. Through first-hand interviews,he reported extensively <strong>on</strong> Sino-U.S. relati<strong>on</strong>s, American foreignpolicies, socioec<strong>on</strong>omic development, and trends in U.S. politics, aswell as their implicati<strong>on</strong>s for the Asia/Pacific regi<strong>on</strong>. He has c<strong>on</strong>tributedto Nepal M<strong>on</strong>itor, an <strong>on</strong>line semi-scholarly journal that is dedicatedto analysis of media and public affairs in Nepal. Before moving to theUnited States, he worked as a journalist and editor for China’s first andthe largest commercialized news group, the Guangzhou Daily Group.Dr. Zhang has published close to twenty scholarly articles <strong>on</strong>public diplomacy and internati<strong>on</strong>al communicati<strong>on</strong> in peer-reviewedjournals such as Public Relati<strong>on</strong>s Review, Place Branding andPublic <str<strong>on</strong>g>Diplomacy</str<strong>on</strong>g>, and Internati<strong>on</strong>al Journal of Communicati<strong>on</strong>. Hepresented more than thirty articles at the c<strong>on</strong>ferences of Internati<strong>on</strong>alCommunicati<strong>on</strong> Associati<strong>on</strong>, Nati<strong>on</strong>al Communicati<strong>on</strong> Associati<strong>on</strong>and The Associati<strong>on</strong> for Educati<strong>on</strong> in Journalism and MassCommunicati<strong>on</strong> (AEJMC). Currently he is c<strong>on</strong>ducting a researchproject <strong>on</strong> engagement public diplomacy.As a CPD C<strong>on</strong>tributing Scholar in Faith <str<strong>on</strong>g>Diplomacy</str<strong>on</strong>g>, Dr. Zhangfocuses his research <strong>on</strong> a project entitled “Exploring Resurgence of<str<strong>on</strong>g>Buddhist</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Diplomacy</str<strong>on</strong>g>.”
