<strong>Admissions</strong> GuidelinesThis booklet is ONLY for applicants who are residing outside Japan, Korea and China, and do not possess Japanesenationality of any form. Applicants who belong to institutions under recommendation agreements and applicants astransfer students should not use this <strong>Admissions</strong> <strong>Handbook</strong>. If you do not belong to the application categories in thisbooklet, please contact the <strong>Admissions</strong> Offi ce for the method of application.1 <strong>Admissions</strong> PolicyBased on the education beliefs of “Freedom, Peace and Humanism”, “International Mutual Understanding” and“Creating the future of <strong>Asia</strong> Pacifi c”, <strong>Ritsumeikan</strong> <strong>Asia</strong> Pacifi c <strong>University</strong> (<strong>APU</strong>) gathers diversifi ed students frommany countries and regions, and hopes to fulfi ll the mission of fostering future elites by the exchange of language andcultures. After completion of their studies, <strong>APU</strong> graduates should be equipped with intercultural communication abilities,and have an international horizon to adapt to changing values.To fulfi ll this mission, <strong>APU</strong> has set its target to recruit domestic and international students who are aiming to be activeleaders of the 21 st century international society in the <strong>Asia</strong> Pacifi c region, and the following colleges are established withthe purpose of developing future talents.College of <strong>Asia</strong> <strong>Pacific</strong> StudiesThe College of <strong>Asia</strong> Pacifi c Studies (APS) was established for the understanding of the politics, economics, socialand cultural issues of the <strong>Asia</strong> Pacifi c region, and for the purpose of developing students who will resolve theproblems in the region through acquisition of basic and specialized knowledge in areas such as International Society,Environmental and Sustainable Development and Tourism. In addition, language profi ciency, communication andproblem-solving skills are enhanced to help contribute to the future development of the region upon graduation.College of International ManagementThe College of International Management (APM) was established for the understanding of the politics, economics,social and cultural issues of the <strong>Asia</strong> Pacifi c region. The college hopes to produce students with fundamental andprofessional knowledge in Business Management and other areas in business. With the learning of corporate strategyand planning, management and intercommunication skills, the graduates are expected to understand the diversifi edinternational business arena and contribute to the globalized corporate activities.<strong>APU</strong> hopes to realize the above goals by recruiting students from all over the world.2 Number of Accepted StudentsIn the 2010 academic year, the number of enrollees is, 650 for the College of <strong>Asia</strong> Pacifi c Studies (APS) and 600 for theCollege of International Management (APM) respectively. The number of acceptances for the admission of internationalstudents is illustrated in the following table.1

5 Application DocumentsThe application form is in a separate booklet. It can alsobe downloaded at http://www.apu.ac.jp/admissionsIMPORTANT1. Applicants should complete the application form and related documents by themselves. English-basis studentsshould write in English, while Japanese-basis students should write in Japanese.2. Depending on the education system, the documents required for submission might differ according to applicant.For details, please refer to P.8 .3. It is a regulation to submit original certifi cates. For documents that are neither written in English nor Japanese,please attach an offi cial translation with the translator’s name, contact details and signature. ONLY translationsby the document-issuing organizations, translation companies and certifi ed translators will be accepted.4. Submitted documents will not be returned. However, original documents that cannot be reissued will be returnedto the applicants upon request. Please attach a request letter with the details of the addressee, if you wish to askfor the return of documents.5. However, higher emphasis is placed on test score resultsduring application screening.Applicants from the United States, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealandand Singapore, who have undertaken their official education in the English language forthe most recent 6 years are not required to submit the above documents.If you have documents that prove your Japanese or other language proficiencies, pleasesubmit the required certifications.It is COMPULSORY for applicants from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Mongoliato submit the required standardized test score results.5. Photograph X 02(Identical)After acceptance and completion of the enrollment procedures, <strong>APU</strong> will apply onbehalf of the applicant for the “Certifi cate of Eligibility (COE) for Status of Residence”at the Japanese Immigration Bureau. The COE is necessary to apply for a “CollegeStudent” visa. Accepted students are expected to submit documents that match theinformation given in the questionnaire. Please make sure that all given informationare accurate and correct.Depending on the country/region, there might be a need to submit documents related to theapplication of the Certificate of Eligibility during application. Additional documents whichprovide other information not included in the questionnaire might also be requested if deemrequired.Two identical photographs taken within 3 months, showing a front view above chestlevel with a plain background. No cap or hat is allowed. The photograph size MUSTbe 4 centimeters high by 3 centimeters wide. Photographs may be in color or blackand white. 10 Certificate of Eligibility (COE) and College Student Visa ObtainmentIn order to enter Japan as a college student, the following procedures are required in general.Application for “Certificate of Eligibility” at Japanese Immigration Bureau After being issued with the COE, applicants must proceed to apply for the “College Student”visa at a Japanese embassy or consulate in your country or region.Regarding the COE application, it is possible for <strong>APU</strong> to apply for the COE on behalf of the applicants if the followingrequirements are met.Applicants who are residing outside Japan, and require the COE to obtain a “College Student” visa.Applicants who have paid the necessary enrollment procedure fees, inclusive of admission fee, tuition fee, APHouse entrance fee, Comprehensive Renter’s Insurance and money deposit (if applicable) by the stipulateddeadline.Applicants who have submitted all the required documents by the stipulated deadline, and able to prove suffi cientfi nances for their period of studies.Confi rmation of the successful applicants’ intention of enrollment is necessary for <strong>APU</strong> to apply for the COE on theirbehalf. Confi rmation is determined upon payment of all enrollment procedure fees. For applicants who wish to have<strong>APU</strong> apply for the COE on their behalf, please check “Yes” in Q18 of the Certifi cate of Eligibility (Resident Status)Application Questionnaire after reading the above information.7

Enrollment Procedure FeesFor enrollment procedures, the payment of the Admission fee, Tuition fee, AP House entrance fee, ComprehensiveRenter’s Insurance and money deposit (if applicable) is necessary. After confirmation of the payment offees, the application for the COE will be made on behalf of the applicant by the university.6 Living ExpensesRegarding the living expenses in Japan, it costs approximately 900,000JPY per year.15


Scholarship System<strong>APU</strong> provides various scholarships for outstanding students. The following scholarships are targeted for students whowill obtain the “College Student” visa as described in the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act. If you donot possess the “College Student” visa, you will not be eligible to apply and receive scholarships, medical benefi ts andother privileges for international students.Scholarship Available Before Enrollmenta. <strong>APU</strong> Tuition Reduction ScholarshipIndividuals who will obtain the “College Student” visa at the time of admissions are eligible to apply for the <strong>APU</strong> tuitionreduction scholarship. The scholarship evaluation will be conducted together with the application screening. Those whowish to apply for this scholarship are to complete the designated <strong>APU</strong> scholarship application essay.This scholarship is made available by the fi nancial contributions of domestic and international companies andindividuals, with the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) that support theideals of <strong>APU</strong>, and its purpose is to help reduce the fi nancial burden for outstanding international students. Studentsawarded with this scholarship are expected to serve as role models.The scholarship will remain valid until graduation, provided that the recipient manages to maintain a good academicrecord and avoid any misconduct unbefi tting that of a scholarship recipient. In case of inappropriate behavior or conductthat tarnish the reputation of the university, the scholarship will be revoked. Interested applicants are to submit theirscholarship application upon understanding of the above matters.
