APUKyung <strong>Hee</strong> <strong>University</strong> (<strong>South</strong> <strong>Korea</strong>) <strong>Dual</strong> <strong>Degree</strong> <strong>Program</strong><strong>AY</strong> 2011 Spring Departure Recruitment InformationIn order to further enhance APU’s internationalization and provide our students with unique educationalopportunities, we hereby implement a <strong>Dual</strong> <strong>Degree</strong> <strong>Program</strong> with Kyung <strong>Hee</strong> <strong>University</strong> (KU) in <strong>South</strong> <strong>Korea</strong>.Students will obtain degrees from both APU and KU through this program.1. <strong>Dual</strong> <strong>Degree</strong> Framework(1) Overview1) Both parties shall transfer the credits obtained at the partner university making it possible forparticipating students to graduate within a minimum of 4-year period. Students will receive a degreefrom both universities.2) APU will only send students in the spring after completion of their 2 nd semester at APU. Second-yearAPU students (from their third semester) will spend 2 years at KU and complete the necessary credits atKU. Students will be able to transfer a maximum of 60 credits back to APU and spend the remainingone year on the APU campus.3) This program is essentially a two-year Student Exchange <strong>Program</strong>. APU participants will pay tuition toAPU only.(2) Application Requirements1) First-year students who enrolled in Spring 2010 (currently in their 2 nd semester)2) Students of any nationality (excluding <strong>Korea</strong>n students) may apply (KU Policy)3) Grades and Language Proficiency:*Students applying for enrollment in the KU College of International Relations will only be sent on anEnglish language basis. Applicants must have a TOEFL CBT score of 213 or higher or languageproficiency equivalent to a TOEFL score of 550 in addition to possessing a cumulative GPA of 2.8 orhigher and must be scheduled to complete 34 credits or more by the end of their 1 st year as conditionsfor a final nomination to KU. Students must be in superior academic standing. It is highlyrecommended that applicants have taken either <strong>Korea</strong>n I or II (or both), or have a <strong>Korea</strong>n languageproficiency equivalent to the level of those courses before studying at KU.*Students applying for enrollment in other KU colleges (Politics and Economics, BusinessAdministration, Humanities, and Hotel and Tourism Management) will be sent on a <strong>Korea</strong>n languagebasis. Applicants must have an advanced level of <strong>Korea</strong>n language proficiency in order to be able totake their courses in <strong>Korea</strong>n. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher and must bescheduled to complete 34 credits or more by the end of their 1 st year as conditions for a final nominationto KU. Students must be in superior academic standing. Standards in determining <strong>Korea</strong>n languageproficiency will be a completion of <strong>Korea</strong>n III prior to departure or a passing grade on Level 3 of the<strong>Korea</strong>n Language Proficiency Test (or a proficiency equivalent to this level).


(3) <strong>Program</strong> Overview (APU Students at KU)1) Credit Transfer❋APU students will study at APU for 1 year, spend 2 years on exchange at KU and return to APU intheir 4 th year. Up to 60 credits obtained at KU can be transferred back to APU. However, any creditstaken at other universities prior to/after enrollment at APU as well as language subject credit transfershall be included within the 60 credits.❋Credits obtained at the Kyung <strong>Hee</strong> <strong>University</strong> Institute of International Education (IIE) languageprograms (foundation subjects) will count towards graduation requirements at KU.❋Subjects taken at the IIE may be transferred back to APU as either Language Education Subjects orFoundation Education Subjects depending on the course content.❋Students will be eligible to receive an APU Bachelor’s degree if they have fulfilled the APU graduationrequirements.❋KU shall transfer the credits that the student has completed in their 1 st and 4 th years, and students willbe eligible to receive a KU Bachelor’s degree if they have fulfilled the KU graduation requirements.❋Credits will be transferred in accordance with both APU and KU regulations.2) Student Status❋Student status here at APU for APU students studying at KU during their 2 nd and 3 rd years will bechanged to “Study Abroad.” It will be possible for students to graduate within a four year period as theperiod of study at KU will be counted within the academic study period. However, there are caseswhere students are unable to graduate within four years due to a lack of credits at either APU or KUwhich is why it is necessary that students have a very clear and detailed study plan before they go.3) Number of Students❋Maximum 2 per year4) Accepting Colleges❋ College of International Relations, College of Politics and Economics, College of BusinessAdministration, College of Humanities, or College of Tourism and Hotel Management.❋All subjects in the College of International Relations are held in English; however, only 10% of classesin the other Colleges are held in English making it necessary that applicants have a proficiency in<strong>Korea</strong>n at a level where they are able to participate in classes without a problem.5) Accommodation❋Dormitory rooms shall be provided by KU, however, students will be responsible for the dormitorycosts.6) Selection of Students from APU❋APU shall recommend students to KU and KU will screen the applications. Application documentswill include the following or an equivalent of the following: 1academic transcript 2course


egistration confirmation sheet, 3statement of intent, 4certification of language proficiency.❋KU shall respect the recommendation of APU, but the final decision of successful applicants lies withKU.7) APU Student Tuition and Fees❋Tuition and fees will be the same as a regular APU student. As tuition fees at the host institution shallbe waived based on the Agreement, students will pay tuition fees (Tuition A and Tuition B) only toAPU for the 2 years spent at KU.❋APU’s International Student Tuition Reduction Scholarships are intended to be used by internationalstudents studying here at APU. The scholarship fund is composed of donations given by APU’sAdvisory Committee as well as by companies within the Supporting Group that agree with APU’s aimsand intentions. Recipients of these scholarships will have their scholarship temporarily suspendedwhile they are at KU as the scholarship is only to be used for study at APU. The scholarship will bereinstated from the semester that the student returns to APU for up to 4 years (8 semesters – theminimum length of time required to graduate). Please read “The Guide to Scholarships,” and directany questions to the Student Office. Those who are receiving an “Honors Scholarship” offered byJASSO will also have this scholarship temporarily suspended as one of the conditions of thisscholarship is that the student is studying at a university in Japan. In principle, all scholarships willbe suspended during the study abroad period. Please contact the organization providing thescholarship or the Student Office and undertake the necessary procedures before departure.❋KU costs such as the application fee for the transfer examination, admission fees, tuition fees and otherprogram fees shall be waived.❋The following costs shall be the responsibility of the student: accommodation, food, books and studymaterials, travel expenses, transportation costs in <strong>Korea</strong> and Japan, passport and visa fees, fees incurredin travel preparation, student health insurance, Risk Management Support System (J-TAS) fees,medical expenses, and any other personal expenses.8) Insurance❋It is mandatory for students to be covered by an Overseas Travel Accident Insurance policy designatedby the Ritsumeikan Academy in addition to coverage by the Risk Management Support System(J-TAS).
