September 23rd, 1936 Page 2Letters to the EditorDear Editor,Today, I was shockedto discover that two of ourown Maycomb childrenhad been spotted at FirstPurchase Church. Out of thegoodness of my heart, I willnot name names in orderto preserve what honor anddignity the family has left inthis small town.As you all know, FirstPurchase is a African churchand it is not a place foryoung children. It is simplynot proper for two whitechildren to attend Masswith bunch of coloreds! Thechurch is located outsideof town ,out of the goodeyesight of kind Maycombcivilians, and issurrounded by people whomay not have the best intentionsin their minds. Thereforesubjecting poor innocentchildren to that kind ofheathen upbringing is notin their best interests andnot of Maycomb stature andculture. These two culturesare not meant to mesh insuch a public and informalway.Sincerely,Miss.
