possible.
The availability of more information on the effectiveness of interventions should
encourage more clinicians and drivers to participate in the assessment process. There
are several potential ways to increase the likelihood of participation:
• Publicize/disseminate information on known risk factors for crashes or driving
cessation and potential assessment strategies;
• Publicize/disseminate information on interventions for these risk factors, including
the strengths and weakness of available evidence;
• Where evidence is lacking, pursue research initiatives to gather data that will
help answer outstanding questions;
• Simplify roles as much as possible and clearly define the responsibilities of all
parties involved;
• Publicize reporting requirements/policies and the process by which reporting
occurs;
• Make things as transparent as possible to all involved by enumerating steps in
the process and individual responsibilities;
• Publicize information on available resources to assist with assessment or
remediation in a given locality;
• Address reimbursement issues for assessment and remediation;
• Address potential barriers to reporting, including confidentiality and immunity
from breach of confidentiality;
• Publicize information on resources and resource people to facilitate transitions to
driving limitations or cessation for people who choose or need to do so;
• Publicize existing transportation options and develop new ones where needs are
not currently being met;
• Improve communication and coordination among different elements of the
process;
• Emphasize patient autonomy in the process and encourage individual and family
involvement in setting goals and priorities for how best to meet transportation
needs safely;
