A10BROOKLYN WELCOMES THE BARCLAYS CENTERSEPTEMBER 21–27, 2012Disney magicMickey’s setting his sights — and skates — on BarclaysBY COLIN MIXSONYour favorite Disneycharacters will be comingto the Barclays Center— and they’ll be bringingtheir skates.Brooklyn’s newest entertainmentdestination willbe hosting “Disney on Ice”from Jan. 23 through Jan.27 — news that’s sure to delightfamilies looking forkid-friendly fun that’s a lotcloser than Long Island orNew Jersey, show organizerssay.“We’re very excited tobe adding the BarclaysCenter to the mix,” saidSteve Yaros, vice presidentof event marketing andsales at feld entertainment,which is producing Disneyon Ice. “Otherwise, folks inBrooklyn would have to goto New Jersey!”The Disney on Ice showevolves annually to includedifferent acts and differentcharacters. This year’sshow is entitled “Rockin’Ever After,” and will featuresome of Disney’s fairestladies in waiting, includingPrincess Meridafrom the recent Pixar film,“Brave.”Of course, the show willfeature Mickey and MinnieMouse, Donald Duck and ahost of traditional Disneystars, Yaros said.The spectacular will includeplenty of eye-dazling(Clockwise from above) Characters from “Brave,” “Tangled,” and“Beauty and the Beast” will sing and glide across the Barclays Centerwhen it hosts “Disney on Ice.” Courtesy Feld Entertainmentpyrotechnics and will emulatethe format of moderntalent shows similar to“American Idol,” only insteadof grumpy Simon Cowell,Mickey will act as judge.“The premis of the showis it’s a talent contest, andMickey’s not in his traditionalgarb, he’s more modernand edgy, and he’s theMC for the whole show,”said Kyle Rougeau, a tourcoordinator for the show.Each princess will gether shot at the spotlight,as they all perform favorednumbers from their respectivefilms to win Mickey’sapproval.“It’s like the greatesthits, for us to put all thosestories in a two-hour production,we pick the biggestscenes with the best music,and then translate that toan on-ice performance,”Yaros said.As much as kids will delightin seeing their favoriteDisney songs performedlive, fans of ice skating willbe equally enraptured bythe show’s on-ice excellence,Yaros explained.Skaters for the showcasehail from across the globe,proving once and for all thatit really is a small world, afterall, organizers said.“Everybody on the showis a world-class skater, peoplefrom all over the worldrepresenting six differentcountries,” said Rougeau.“Skating is their life.”“Disney on Ice” at theBarclays Center [620 AtlanticAve. at Flatbush Avenuein Downtown, (212) 359–6387, www.barclayscenter.com] from Jan. 23 to Jan.27.
