Tap TalkMany people do not know that the state of Victoria has moremicro-breweries than any other state, with just short of 50breweries. We even beat Western Australia in the brewerytally, the state that was traditionally seen as the home of craftbeers. We are spoilt for choice in Melbourne and it is hard to havejust one favourite brew. There are seasonal beers, beersthat are suited to match food, sessional beers and one offsmall batch beers, then we have to break it down again intodark lagers, stout, amber, I.P.A., wheat beer, porter, pale ale, pilsner, sour beers. We are seeing more and more beer events, such as the 2 ndannual “Good Beer Week” that took place in May, with eventsall over Melbourne and country Victoria. The week startedwith the Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular (GABS) at theRoyal Exhibition Buildings, hosting over 60 breweries fromAustralia and New Zealand and saw over 10,000 visitorscome through the doors.Events such as these are a great way to try new beers, meetthe brewers, drink beer, try some more beer and drinkbeer (next year I will try to get the week off). This year I tried(amongst others) a Japanese beer made from Sweet Potato(from Coeda Brewery which was surprisingly enjoyable!), haddinner with Chuck Hahn (everyone knows who Chuck Hahnis- but for those who don’t, Chuck established a little breweryby the name of Hahn Brewery) and shared a frothy withbrewers from Moo Brew and Feral Brewery. This is my secondGood Beer Week and I am eagerly looking forward to its3 rd year (May 18 th to May 26 th , 2013). This event had humblebeginnings and in just over a year grew to over one hundredevents. I cant wait to see what next year brings…- Colin RossVenue Manager, Club KilsythComing to the TapMatilda Bay Brewery has recently moved to abigger brewery and “brewers door” in a convertedchocolate factory in Port Melbourne. The brewerycan be heralded as the brewery that started thecraft beer revolution in Australia during 1984.Redback was the first craft beer to come out inbatches from the small brewery in the Sail & AnchorPub (Fremantle, W.A.) and sold directly to theirpatrons. Their maiden brew was the Redback wheatbeer – the first of its style made in Australia and stillwinning awards today, most recently best Wheat Beer at the2012 Australian International Beer Awards. Redback waslaunched in the mid-80s to coincide with the AmericasCup defence in Fremantle, so try the beer that started arevolution.{ }“ A fine beer maybe judged withonly one sip, butit’s better to bethoroughly sure. ”RedbackStyle: HefeweizenStrength: 4.7%Redback is Australia’s original wheatbeer, brewed from both maltedwheat and malted barley, and ablend of Saaz and Pride of RingwoodHops.
