TRUST’S CARERS
WORK CONTINUES
The Standing Commission on Carers (SCOC) recently
visited nine areas across the UK as part of their
government-initiated fact-fi nding mission. Bradford,
alongside Thameside near Manchester, were the only
northern cities included in the group’s itinerary.
Following the SCOC visit, carers’ lead Ruth Dixon
was invited to London to hear the commissioners’
feedback alongside Bradford’s other representatives,
deputy director of NHS Airedale Bradford and Leeds
Ali Jan Haider, carer Lisa James, Adult Social Care team
manager Margeret McEvilly and joint commissioning
manager for carers in Bradford district, Ian Brooke-
Mawson. Here she explains more…
The purpose of SCOC’s London
conference was to discuss what
they had found during their
Bradford visit and to bring back key
points to develop services for carers in
Bradford and Airedale.
One of the commissioners who visited
the BRI described the initiatives from
our carers work stream as “enthusiastic,
encouraging and full of energy”.
We’ve also since received interest from
Westminster Carers Network and also
Luton & Bedfordshire NHS who wish to
emulate some of the work being done
here at Bradford Teaching Hospitals.
The purpose of the carers work stream
which I lead is to deliver aspects of the
national and local carer strategy as well as
developing and implementing processes
which will enable carers of all ages to;
■ Be identifi ed and recognised
■ Be valued as partners in hospital
discharge, and
■ Be signposted to services in the
community.
As part of this vital work, a support
worker from Carers Resource visits the
BRI and St Luke’s every week to provide
information and face-to-face support for
carers who are visiting their relative or
friend in hospital.
The number of carers in Bradford is
rising in line with national trends due
to the increasing elderly population.
Bradford also has higher than average
rates of illness and disability among
children which leads to more carers of
children with disabilities, and caring
relationships which continue as those
children reach adulthood. These carers
are very often parents but may also
include grandparents, sibling young carers
and other family, neighbours and friends.
There are 48,000 unpaid carers in
the Bradford district and around 500
ROYAL COLLEGE HONOUR
The Royal College of Physicians has presented the Foundation
Trust with a plaque to celebrate their tenth anniversary.
without the support of the examination
centres and examiners in hospitals.
“To mark the tenth anniversary of the
PACES examination, MRCP (UK) wishes
to thank in particular those centres who
consistently dedicated their facilities to the
examination by assessing more than 100
candidates / hosting the examination for
seven days or more over the last three years.
“The presentation of this plaque is in
recognition of your continuing commitment
to PACES.”
Over the last decade, MRCP (UK)
has assessed over 22,800 candidates in 256
examination centres in 11 countries.
