THE GATEWAYTHE BULLETIN OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF BOMBAYVol. 53 Issue No. 1 Mumbai July 5 to July 11, 2010 Pages 12 Price Rs. 3/-For Private Circulation OnlyYou can enrich your life by reaching withinand embracing humanityMy dear Fellow Rotarians,It had to be an Indian who would askthe world to ignore gloss and to lookwithin. Rotary International PresidentKalyan Banerjee has done just that. His Theme for the year, ReachWithin to Embrace Humanity, is asIndian as can be and bids well to helpthe world correct itself. As far as the 1.20 million Rotariansthroughout the world are concerned,he knows what we possess and whatwe can achieve. That’s why he wantsus to reach within and to unleash ouruntapped potential which will give usthe opportunity to serve and to embracehumanity at the same time.Privileged as we are by virtue of thestatus, position and wealth we enjoy,we as Rotarians are nevertheless boundby a responsibility to ensure that wereach out and touch the lives of themarginalised and underprivileged sectionsof society.Over the last three years, yourBoard has looked at (and will continueto look at) the programmes andprojects of the Club from three perspectives:(a) their need; (b) their viabilityand sustainability; and (c) theirimpact on the community.Keeping these in mind and awareof the fact that we need to keep ondoing far more than we are doing rightnow, your Club has worked out thebroad contours of a three-pronged approachthat should enable it to meetsome of these objectives.Let me start by saying that we have, quietly and inexorably (and withoutWelcome to the Club,DG Vijay JalanDistrict Governor Vijay Jalan willbe the chief guest at the firstmeeting of the new Rotary year tobe held on Tuesday, July 5(Please see Page 12)realising it), moved on to playing aneven greater role for the community inTalwada where we run our Kohinoorproject, the Hasanali Tobaccowala EyeCentre. We also have the outstandingADMC next door which offers regularmedical care to the residentsthrough its TB unit, dental department, pathology laboratory and paediatricsection.Apart from providing solar energyto the two Rotary-run hospitals andthe Ashramshala (the biggest governmentboarding school for local childrenin Maharashtra), it was felt thatsomething else needed to be done. Theanswer was found some years ago –the establishment of a junior collegebang in the middle of the village sothat children finishing high school donot have to forego higher education.Few can afford to travel long distancesto attend junior college.Completion of the junior collegein Talwada tops the social agendaof our Club this year.Bhavishya-Yaan, which is fast becominganother illustrious project ofour Club, is a mission to a brighterfuture. It is a skills-enhancementprogramme for under-privileged childrenin Bombay’s municipal schoolsand has fired the imagination ofClubs in the District; it has won everyDistrict award and has beenrecognised by Rotary International, too. It is proposed to expand this projectso that it covers one more municipalschool from this year (it already coversfour). It impacts children’s livesnot only in the field of academics, butalso in art, music, sports, Englishspeaking and other social and computingskills. The confidence this hasengendered in the children is worthgoing miles to see. Thanks are due tothe NGO Vidya in whom we havefound an able and diligent partner. Our non-structured education effortsin the area of Vocational Trainingand Night Study Centres will be anotherarea of thrust this year. TheRotary Vocational Training Centre, ajoint venture with the BombayYMCA since 1994, has been a silentbut immensely successful project thatcaters to more than 1,400 studentsannually, offering them job-relatedskills that help them to earn a decentlivelihood. We have dealt with the young, theailing and the tribal parts of our population. What about the ageing section?India will soon have a large number ofsenior citizens who will require to belooked after with tender, loving care intheir sunset years. Our Club plans toadopt an Old-Age Home in a Bombaysuburb as part of its initiative for seniorcitizens.Which brings me to the DistrictThrust areas; these are Water Conservation,Solar Energy and the Environment. Our Club will deploy resourcesin terms of funds, expertise and manpowerand walk the extra mile to makean impact in these areas. My dear fellow Rotarians, I inviteyou to live your lives to the fullestand, at the same time, to grab the opportunitythat your Club offers youto give back to society, especially toour less-fortunate brethren. We havenot lived a full and meaningful life unlesswe have knowingly done somegood to someone who may never bein a position to repay. Such a fulfillingand enriching prospect is available andis being offered to you.– Paul GeorgePresident, 2011-2012The Rotary Club of Bombaywww.rotaryclubbombay.orgWE’RE HONOURED!R.I. PresidentKalyanBanerjee toaddress thefirst meetingof the ClubRotary International President-Elect Kalyan Banerjee will bethe chief guest at the first meetingof the Rotary Club of Bombayfor the Rotary year 2011-12.The meeting, which will be held atthe regular venue, the Taj MahalHotel, from 12 pm on Tuesday,July 5, will be chaired by PresidentPaul George.Members are requested to attendthe meeting in large numbers tohear the inspiring address byKalyan Banerjee, who is thethird Indian to serve as the Presidentof Rotary International.District Governor Vijay Jalan, along with First Lady Kiran, willbe the guest of honour at themeeting. The Rotary Club of Bombay ishonoured to have in its midstthe two most prominent personsin the Rotary world –Kalyan and Vijay.Welcome to the Rotary Club ofBombay!

Helping the youth, adding value to their lives;Paul George lets his work speak for himThe President and the First Lady. Paul and Sheila at home. Paul has an abiding interest in the environment; he loves nature trails, often goes trekkingand has done his bit to enhance the tree coverSome people call him Santa Clausin a business suit; a Santa Clauswho is visible all through the yearand not just around Christmas time.Others say that he reminds them ofa benign uncle with a beatific smileand a benevolent mien, who has asharp memory and loves to spreadlaughter and joy.As far as members of the RotaryClub of Bombay are concerned, hehas, for the last ten years, been seenas a man who lets his work speakfor him and who prefers silence tothe sound of his voice.Admitted to the Club on February27, 2001, and loaned the ClassificationSocial Service: International,Paul plays a key role in theconduct of YMCA institutions allover the city. That’s a role whichrequires him to interact with youngpeople all the time. But did you know that Paul, who joined the YMCA movementat the age of 22 (he’s 51 now), isan all-out Mumbaikar? Yes, hewas born and brought up inBombay. After obtaining his B.Com. degreefrom Bombay University and earninga Diploma in Business Management,he underwent a year’s formaltraining in theology and became aDeacon at St. Thomas’s Cathedral. For those who came in late, theRotary movement was founded in1905 by a great man called Paul Harris. And, what do you know, theYMCA movement was foundedmuch earlier, in 1844, by anothergreat man called George Williams. Therefore, one can say at a cinchthat Paul + George (or Paul Georgeto the rest of us) will lead the RotaryClub of Bombay in the newRotary year 2011-2012!This fruitful association betweenRotary and YMCA goes back morethan eight decades, when the RotaryClub of Bombay was chartered in1929. One of the Charter memberswas H.W. Bryant who representedYMCA. He served as Vice-Presidentfor two consecutive terms, first underSir Phiroze Sethna (1931/32) andthen under President Dr. W. Nunan(1932/33).Rotary and YMCA started workingtogether on the Night Study Centresin 1971; these unique institutionshave won acclaim for welcomingstudent with open arms. Theycharge no fees, require no uniformsand have no bells to signal the end ofclass. Their only requirement is aburning desire to learn and to gainknowledge.Paul has played a key role in thesmooth conduct of all the collaborativeventures between the YMCAand the Rotary Club of Bombay. As President of the Club, he can beexpected to strengthen the partnership.Besides, his experience at YMCAwill stand him in good stead as he navigatesthe ship of the Rotary Club ofBombay. He will certainly make surethat the Club and its members ReachWithin to Embrace Humanity.Paul is married to the charmingSheila who is an IT professional ofrepute and the Head of IT at LoopTelecom. The couple has two children, Rebekahand Reuben. Rebekah is a formerCathedralite who has just completeda double major in psychologyand economics from Cornell Collegein the USA. Young Reuben, onthe other hand, is also a former Cathedralitewho loves playing the tablaand the clarinet and is at presentpursuing his undergraduate studiesat St. Xavier’s College.Paul has an abiding interest in theenvironment; he loves nature trails, often goes trekking and has done hisbit to enhance the tree cover. One happy family.
