THE GATEWAYTHE BULLETIN OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF BOMBAYVol. 53 Issue No. 31 Mumbai January 31 to February 6, 2012 Pages 8 Price Rs. 3/-For Private Circulation Only‘Padma Shri’ forDr. Mukesh Batra,Dr. Swati PiramalDr. Mukesh Batra, an activemember, and Dr. Swati Piramal,a former member (she is thespouse of the Honorary member,Mr. Ajay Piramal), havebeen conferred the Padma Shriin the awards list announced bythe President on the eve of RepublicDay, 2012.They join the long list of citizenswho have been honoured by theRepublic of India for outstandingservice to the communitythrough their labours andendeavours.Dr. Mukesh Batra has been honouredfor his contribution in thefield of “Medicine: Homoeopathy”.Dr. Swati, on the other hand, hasbeen decorated for her work inthe area of “Trade and Industry”.Hearty congratulations to both theawardees.Do ends justify the means? The debate continuesNobody sticks to rules if they canbe circumvented, bent or brokenfor benefit. Cutting corners, findingexcuses, blaming others, claiming innocence, feigning ignorance, these arethe traits of modern-day traders, businesspersons, industrialists, professionalsand others. In the circumstances, when theends always justify means, does themuch-vaunted Four-Way Test propagatedby Rotary International haveany relevance? Does it need to bemothballed and consigned to oblivion? An overwhelming majority in anygathering will respond to such a querywith a resounding “Aye!” But whatwould take its place? A motto thatexhorts one to “win at all costs”? Ifthat were the case, the Four-Way Testwould have been abandoned long ago. For, the above scenario is not typicalof the present times. Such scenes haveplayed out in every decade of the lastcentury and not only in the first decadeof this one.Yet, the Four-Way Test has stoodthe test of time and continues toguide, motivate and inspire professionalsand business persons in theyear 2012 as much as it did in theyear 1932 when it was first introduced.(For those who came in late, in1932 Herbert J. Taylor, then presidentof a nearly bankrupt Chicagocookware company, believing hisemployees were in need of an “ethicalyardstick”, wrote these four questionson a small piece of paper: Is itthe TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILLand BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Willit be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?(When those lines were penned, the USA was in the grip of the GreatDepression. Herbert Taylor went onto become President of Rotary Internationalin 1954 when he formallypresented to it the copyright to the24 words of the Four-Way Test.(By that time, it was already inwide use around the world and waseven acknowledged by Newsweekmagazine.)Proof of the fact that the Four-Way Test is relevant even in today’scut-throat world came at thelast meeting with the screeningof a Hindi film with English subtitlesbased on the Test and adaptedfrom a stage play penned by PPDadi Engineer; this play was firstperformed at the Club in 1978 andagain in 2009.(Continued on Page 2)www.rotaryclubofbombay.orgRI Theme for 2012-13is unveiledR.I. Rotary meets the$200 m ‘Challenge’;Bill Gates givesanother $50 mRotary International has succeededin meeting the Bill &Melinda Gates Foundation’s $200million match in funding for polioeradication, raising more than $202.6million as of January 17.“We’ll celebrate this milestone, but it doesn’t mean that we’ll stopraising money or spreading the wordabout polio eradication,” RotaryFoundation Trustee John F. Germtold Rotary leaders at the InternationalAssembly in San Diego, California,USA. “We can’t stop untilthe entire world is certified poliofree.”The fund-raising milestone wasreached in response to $355 millionin “Challenge” grants awarded toThe Rotary Foundation by theGates Foundation. All funds havebeen earmarked to support polioimmunisation activities in affectedcountries where the vaccine-preventabledisease continues to paralysechildren.“In recognition of Rotary’s greatwork and to inspire Rotarians in thefuture, the (Gates) foundation iscommitting an additional $50 millionto extend our partnership,” saidMr. Jeff Raikes, CEO of the GatesFoundation.“Rotary started the global fightagainst polio and continues to setthe tone for private fund-raising,grassroots engagement and maintainingpolio at the top of the agendawith key policymakers,” said Mr.Raikes while addressing Rotary leadersat their International Assembly. The new $50 million grant fromthe Gates Foundation is not a challengegrant.FOUR-WAY TEST FILM TOBE UPLOADED ON‘YOUTUBE’; MAY BECOPIED ON PEN DRIVES(Continued from Page 1)The film version of the Four-WayTest, titled “Kya Yeh Sach Hai?” wasmade by Chairman Suresh Jagtiani. He wrote it, produced it, directed it,photographed it on his digital cameraand even handled the entire post-productionwork, including the editing, synchronisation, music and so on.One of the unique features of thefilm was the karaoke section towardsthe end that enabled the audience tosing the title song as it was renderedon the screen in the mellifluous voiceof Sudha Malhotra Motwane.Adding to the thrill of the momentwere scores of Rotaractors from H.R.and other colleges, some of themsporting red t-shirts; they emergedfrom the shadows to sing the chorus,“Kya yeh sach hai, kya yeh sahi hai”.It was a fitting finale to the premiereshow of the film. The plot, in brief, was as follows:A firm bagged an export order that itknew it could not fulfil within therequired time. So it got a lawyer todraw up an agreement with one importantclause, that of “force majeure”which, it believed would enable it tocite circumstances beyond its controland to get away with any delayin delivery. However, it soon realised that thegoods prepared would not be approvedby the buyer, so it allowedthe working conditions in its factoryto deteriorate, forcing the workers togo on a strike. Citing the strike assomething beyond its control, thefirm bought time, got a new consignmentprepared and then exported it –to the satisfaction of all concerned. But was this approach truthful? Was it ethical? Although it appearedto have benefited everybody, did itbuild goodwill and foster friendships? These were the questions posed bythe narrator of the film. The film had Sitaram Shah playingthe main role, that of Mr. Chopra, the man who insisted that the endsjustified the means. His character assertedthat by allowing the workersto go on strike, he had protectedmany jobs, ensured that the firm didnot suffer a loss, earned the gratitudeof the board of directors and of theshareholders and so on.Shyyamniwas Somani enacted therole of the general manager, a manforced against his wishes to toe theline being taken by Mr. Chopra. WhileMadhusudan Daga looked every inchthe works manager at the factory,Suresh Jagtiani was quite smooth asthe legal brain that drew up the agreement. And PP Kalpana Munshi wasconfidence personified as the narrator.Suresh thanked Meera Kumar forher assistance in translating the originallines into Hindi and Sudha for singingthe theme song. He had a specialword of praise for Baji Bilimoria whohad inspired him to make the film.He said later that the film wouldbe uploaded on YouTube so other RotaryClubs could download it forscreening. Those interested in a highresolutionprint could approach himfor a copy of the film on a pen drive.R.I. Theme for 2012-13is unveiled(Continued from Page 1)Peace had different meanings for differentpeople, said Sakuji.“No definition is right and no definitionis wrong. However (in whicheverway) we use the word, this iswhat peace means for us. No matterhow we use, or understand the word,Rotary can help us to achieve it,” headded.Sakuji, a businessman from thegreater Tokyo metropolitan area, revealedhow becoming a Rotarian broadenedhis understanding of the world. After joining the Rotary Club of Yashioin 1975, he said, he began to realisethat his life’s purpose was not to makemore money but to be useful to otherpeople. He said the Japanese tradition ofputting the needs of society above theneeds of the individual helped his countryrebuild after the tsunami and earthquakein March, 2011.“This is a lesson that I think thewhole world can learn from, in a positiveway. When we see the needs ofothers as more important than our ownneeds – when we focus our energies ona shared goal that is for the good of all– this changes everything. It changesour priorities in a fundamental way.And it changes how we understandthe idea of peace.”Sakuji said he would ask Rotariansand the incoming leaders to focus onsupporting the three priorities of theR.I. Strategic Plan and on promotingthe three Rotary Peace Forums to beheld in Hiroshima, Japan; Berlin; andHonolulu, Hawaii, USA.“In Rotary, our business is notprofit. Our business is peace... Our rewardis not financial but the happinessand satisfaction of seeing a better, morepeaceful world, one that we haveachieved through our own efforts,” headded. The man behind the movie is Four-Way Test Chairman Everybody loved the film. They participatedin the drive organised by the RotaryClub of Bombay along with theRotaract Club of H.R. College (a reporton this appeared in The Gatewaydated January 17).Another highlight was the interactiveprogramme held on February 11,when senior personnel of the TrafficPolice answered questions posed tothem by young boys and girls.Among the Interact Clubs that heldtheir own drives outside their premiseswere those at Bharda New High School(they did so on January 5), HVB Academy(January 6), St. Anne’s School(January 7) and Fort Convent and St.Mary’s (on January 10).When District Governor Vijay Jalanmade his Official Visit to the RotaryClub of Bombay on January 17, thePresidents of the Interact Clubs at theabove schools conveyed informationabout their activities to him.The Interact Club of Green LawnsHigh School, sponsored by the RotaryClub of Bombay Worli, wonderedwhether they could also take part inthe drive to propagate the need forroad safety. When invited to do so,the Club sent 40 members to WorliIsland, near the Worli-Bandra Sealink,on January 12; they, too, held aloftbanners emphasising safe driving.Printed on the banners that theyheld up were the following slogans:“No road safety – Know injury,” “Lifedoesn’t have a reset button: Drivesafely,” “Follow traffic rules – Saveyour future” and “Your family is waitingfor you: Drive safely.”Before the interactive programmeat H.R. College on January 11, 50Rotaractors of the college displayedplacards outside the two institutions, viz., H.R. and K.C., conveying the needfor road safety to college-going youth. When the formal programme washeld in the premises of H.R. College,District Governor Vijay Jalan, PresidentPaul George, President-ElectNowroze Vazifdar, District AvenueChair N.D. He had alsogiven permission for street plays onroad safety at the Gateway of India,Inox cinema at Nariman Point, R-CityMall, Phoenix Mall and so on. He haddeputed senior officers at the venuesand also facilitated participation in theMumbai Marathon.President Paul, who welcomed thegathering, stressed the need for roadsafety because many precious humanlives were unnecessarily lost on roads. He was pleased to note that Rotaractorsand Interactors were takingkeen interest in promoting the cause.Rotaractor Dinesh, who representedH.R. College, said it was verytragic that every year over 200,000people died in road accidents in India. In Maharashtra alone, around 18,000people, many of them very young inage, died. The young generation hadnow taken up the cause very seriouslyand would propagate it by taking partin rallies and by distributing postersand pamphlets in societies, schoolsand colleges.District Governor Vijay Jalan saidit was tragic that so many valuablelives were being snuffed out in roadaccidents which occurred because oflack of road safety. Several RotaryClubs in the District had initiatedawareness programmes; the distributionof stickers and posters had beentaken up not only in the city, but alsoin the suburbs of Thane and Deonar. He thanked Mr. Phansalkar and hisdepartment for helping Rotary Clubsto spread mass awareness throughoutDistrict 3140.In a brief speech, (Dr.) Indu Shahanisaid she always got upset when shelearnt about people, especially theyoung, dying in road accidents. Shesaid the Rotaractors of H.R. Collegewere enthusiastically participating inthe noble task of spreading the messageof road safety.Mr. Vivek Phansalkar complimentedthe Rotary Club of Bombayfor taking the lead in propagating roadsafety measures, pointing out that theyouth were “the citizens of tomorrow”.He also lauded the Club formobilising leading sports personalitiesto become “ambassadors” for the campaignand thanked the Sheriff for promotingthe cause through the youth. There had been a good response tothe campaign at public places and outsideschools and colleges. Publicity inthe press and on the electronic mediahad also helped spread the message. As a result, he claimed, there had beena noticeable fall in the accident rate. But it was the driver at the wheel, the person riding the two-wheeler, whohad to scrupulously follow the rulesto ensure his/her safety lest there wasan accident and it ruined the lives ofone or more families. He agreed that it was a difficult taskto ensure safety on roads, what with250 new cars coming out on the city’sroads every day.
