About Cool Chain
Consumers around the world have become accustomed
to buying high-quality produce irrespective of season.
In turn, growers and suppliers demand the advanced
logistical services that ensure their produce arrives on time
and in peak condition. Innovative, life-saving drugs must
reach patients perfectly on time. The efficiency of
temperature-sensitive medications depends on a
professional logistics management system, which complies
with industry and government regulations.
Emirates SkyCargo’s Cool Chain solution is designed for the
movement of highly temperature-sensitive goods including
pharmaceuticals, healthcare products and perishables.
Using protective measures such as temperature-controlled
air cargo containers, cool dollies during transit and
temperature-controlled warehouses, the quality of the
product is preserved and the integrity of cool chain
processes right from pick-up to delivery is ensured.
In line with IATA requirements, Cool Chain is also geared to
handle transportation of perishable goods requiring basic
preservation of freshness from heat and frost.

Extending the Cool Chain -
our fleet
The successful transportation of perishables takes
a high degree of skill, careful handling, meticulous
organisation and sophisticated systems, facilities and
equipment. Our passenger fleet offers cargo capacities
varying from 8,000 kg to 23,000 kg, and hold volumes
from 60 cubic metres to 210 cubic metres.
Providing enhanced efficiency is our freighter fleet,
consisting of the Boeing 747-400F and the
Boeing 777F, offering a payload capacity up to
117 tonnes and 103 tonnes respectively.
Our Boeing 747-400F has independently-controlled,
air-conditioned zones, enabling Emirates SkyCargo
to carry items requiring different temperatures on the
same flight. Each zone may be maintained at different
temperature levels. On other Emirates aircraft, special
temperature-controlled containers are also available to
ensure that your temperature-critical goods are stored
in ideal conditions.

Cool Chain facilities -
The Cargo Mega Terminal
Service in the air is matched on the ground. Our Cargo
Mega Terminal (CMT) forms the hub of our operations
in Dubai and houses independently-controlled, special
storage zones to maintain the critical requirements of
temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals, healthcare products
and perishable goods. The CMT has a dedicated perishable
handling area of 4,623 square metres with an annual capacity
of 175,000 tonnes. This is divided into two main zones:
Perishable 1, which maintains an average temperature
of 50C and Perishable 2, which maintains an average
temperature of 120C. In addition, our Pallet and Container Handling System
(PCHS) Cool Storage is capable of maintaining temperature
settings between 50C to 180C. Moreover, our CMT houses
a freezer section which is 400 cubic metres and maintains
a temperature of minus (-) 180C, accommodating 20 AKE.
There are 12 dedicated perishable docks, a screening
facility for intact ULDs and power sockets to serve heating
and cooling containers. There is also storage space for
218 Unit Load Devices (ULDs) for perishable cargo
in the CMT covering over 3,927 square metres. There are
14 work stations allocated for break-down and
build-up of perishable cargo, as well as dedicated
customer counters and truck docks for acceptance and
deliveries. Other special cargo handling areas include
storage in temperature-controlled areas for Live Animals
and Human Remains. There is also dedicated storage
available for Pharma shipments. Ten power sockets are
available in three locations of the airside edge of the
Cargo Mega Terminal to serve Cool Dollies and
electric-powered Active Temperature-controlled units.

Protection from the elements -
additional care
In collaboration with a world-leading research institution
specialising in cold chain management and technologies,
Emirates SkyCargo brings you the White Cover.
This innovative, low cost and reusable protective cover
is designed to shield temperature-sensitive cargo from
solar heat during transportation. Being water resistant,
yet breathable, the White Cover is ideal for ‘living’
food and flower products as well as offering additional
protection for packaged pharmaceutical shipments
in room temperature range and in insulated packaging.
The White Cover is environmentally friendly, being
100 percent recyclable. What’s more, it also allows for
cooling of the shipment during transportation and cold
storage. The fact that this unique protection completely
encloses the shipments and weighs no more than three
kilograms, makes the additional shipping cost negligible.
Its application is straightforward, taking two people a
maximum of eight minutes for application on a pallet.

For hot runways - Cool Dollies
Emirates SkyCargo continues to set the standard in
maintaining an unbroken cool chain and extending
the shelf life of perishables and temperature-sensitive
commodities. The Cool Dolly is a refrigerated dolly
on wheels, which can carry one complete aircraft
pallet/container upon aircraft arrival at a preset
temperature, adjustable to the requirements of the
perishable product inside. This means that perishables
and temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals are not
exposed to weather anomalies and are totally protected
between the aircraft and the Cargo Mega Terminal,
as well as throughout other transit facilities at the
Dubai International Airport.
Comprising a steel trailer and an aluminum-insulated
container, the Cool Dolly’s chlorine-free cooling system,
fitted with a diesel engine and an electrical backup
system, is able to maintain temperatures between -40C to +200C. These units are capable of handling all types of
lower deck ULDs (Unit Load Devices), including pallets,
and handle loads up to 6,800 kg. They can accommodate
two AKE/LD3 or one AMF or an ALF or a PMC. Our Cool
Dollies ensure that highly-sensitive commodities enjoy a
seamless, controlled environment throughout their
journey with us.

Preserving the Cool Chain -
special containers
Emirates SkyCargo’s temperature-controlled containers
allow the carriage of commodities at a constant
temperature, both in the air and on the ground,
boosting the life of temperature-sensitive commodities by
preserving the cool chain throughout the transportation
process. Featuring active temperature control systems
that range from -200C to +200C, they keep the product
temperature stable despite fluctuations in the
ambient temperature.
Temperature-controlled containers come in different
sizes, technical specifications and are suitable for all your
shipment needs. However, different container types are
used for the transportation of pharmaceuticals like insulin,
vaccines, blood plasma, protein and saturated solutions
in comparison to perishables like meat, seafood, fruit,
vegetables and dairy products. In addition, because
each temperature-controlled container has its own
temperature-controlled mechanism, we can transport
a wide range of products on the same flight.
