What kind of vehicle is this Audi A5 Sportback? A coupé? An Avant? This vehicle does not fit into familiar categories. It defines a class of its own –a five-door coupé. From the elongated, three-dimensionally carved bonnet through to the tail, the design echoes the classic form of a two-door.The sharp distinctive lines give the vehicle expression and stance. The flat roof is stretched elegantly over the frameless doors and a sporty shoulderline accentuates the large wheels. The elegant yet powerful roofline of the Audi A5 Sportback is rounded off by its smoothly accentuatedtail. The redesigned rear lights are particularly fascinating: they are the optical link between the shoulderline at the side and the edge of the bumper. The horizontal lines of the rear bumper accentuate thedecisiveness of the design, while the diffuser insert in a contrasting colour increases the dynamics. Thefront fog lights have been redesigned; they are enclosed by a black high-gloss blade. The optional xenonplus headlights with integrated LED daytime running light strip are particularly eye-catching. It only takes a millisecond for a normal driving situation to become a challenge. The best option is to detect dangerous situations early and thus avoid them if possible.The A5 Sportback has extensive assistance systems to help drivers with this. Audi active lane assist, which is available on request, for example, warns the driverif the vehicle is inadvertently drifting out of lane and gently intervenes in the steering if necessary, while the optional Audi side assist monitors the areas to the left,right and behind the vehicle and issues a warning during lane changing if there is a vehicle in the immediate vicinity in the adjacent lane.Audi drive select lets you drive according to your mood – comfortably or sportily as you prefer. The 3.0 TFSI V6 spontaneouslycomes to life, six turbocharged cylinders release 245 kW of power. The TFSItechnology ensures you make progress not only more quickly, but moreefficiently too. It combines innovativematerials, intelligent design principles andproduction processes that use resources sparinglyinto an overall concept. Many Audi ultra lightweightmeasures have already been implemented in theAudi A5 Sportback and S5 Sportback.That starts with the body. The steel shell designof the Audi A5 Sportback and S5 Sportbackcombines low weight with high rigidity.The design uses only as much material asnecessary in the respectively right places. Thinmetal panels made of hot and cold formed steelin the body structure are combined withlightweight but sturdy aluminium in the bodyplating on the bonnet and wings, for example.The aluminium components on the front and rearaxle and the aluminium alloy wheels not onlyreduce the overall weight but also the unsprungmasses, which in turn leads to a further increasein agility and driving comfort.Drive technologies such as direct fuel injectionand turbocharging have always made Audiengines more powerful. Audi ultra resolves this conflictby examining each and every component.We demand the highest functionalitycombined with the lowest possible weight.The result is an intelligent mix of materialsthat even allows a reduction in engine size:lighter vehicles no longer need a large engineto be agile. In some cases, an injectionprocess can involve the injection of thetiniest of amounts weighing less thana thousandth of a gram.Pre-injection results in a “gentle”combustion process and consequentlyexcellent combustion acoustics andagreeable engine runningcharacteristics.TDI®In other words: Where is the tank?One in every two Audi cars sold today is a diesel.What sounds perfectly normal now was cause forhuge excitement 20 years ago, when Audirevolutionised the market with the first 2.5 litreTDI engine. Since then, developments such ascommon rail technology have made TDI evenmore efficient. Piezo injectors ensure the fuel isfinely and precisely distributed. Consequently,since the first TDI, the engines have becomemore economical, whilst specific output hasincreased. So it was only logical that a diesel carshould then enter the world of motorsport. Andsuccessfully too: in 2006, Audi was the first carmaker to win the Le Mans 24 Hours with a dieselpoweredrace car, the Audi R10 TDI – and thenwent on to repeat this victory several times over,most recently in 2011.Powerful TDI engines are available for the Audi A5Sportback, and these are equipped with intelligentcommon rail technology and the start-stop systemas standard. The particularly economical 2.0 TDIwith 130 kW is available both with a 6-speedmanual transmission and with the convenientmultitronic® system. The 3.0 TDI with 150 kW isnew, and one of the most efficient 6-cylinderengines currently available anywhere in the world.The top-of-the-range engine is the 3.0 TDI with180 kW. What is the benefit of two clutches?A double saving: time and energy.The 7-speed dual-clutch transmission enablesrapid gear shifting with hardly any perceptiblebreak in propulsive power and is thereforeparticularly efficient.As long ago as 1985, Walter Röhrl tested thistechnology in the Sport quattro S1 – and wassuitably impressed. Audi drivers share hisenthusiasm to this day, because the modernS tronic changes gear in a flash. To do this, twomulti-plate clutches serve the different gears. Onelarge clutch transfers the torque via a solid driveshaft to the gearwheels of the odd-numbered gears.A second clutch serves the even-numbered gearsvia a hollow shaft. Both parts of the transmissionare permanently active, although there is onlyever one actively connected to the engine via aclosed clutch. For example, if the vehicle isaccelerating in third gear, then the second part ofthe transmission is already engaged in fourthgear. The gear change happens very quicklythrough the change of clutches – the first clutchopens, whilst the second one closes. The gearchange only takes a few hundredths of a secondand is completed with virtually no interruption inthe power flow. It runs so smoothly andcomfortably that the driver barely notices it.It does not matter whether the driver chooses thefully automatic modes with the programs D (Drive)or S (Sport) or, for example, changes gear manuallywith the shift paddles – the gear change feelsprecise and extremely sporty. Even with all of thisdynamic technology, the S tronic still remains veryefficient. 42quattro®Why only use two wheelswhen a car has four?The quattro® permanent all-wheel drive.quattro is a permanent all-wheel drive. If thewheels on one axle of the vehicle lose grip on theroad and threaten to spin, then the drive force istransferred to the other axle – automatically andpermanently distributed through the centredifferential. The basic distribution is 40 : 60 –40 % of the driving power comes from the frontaxle, 60 % from the rear. The benefit is bettertraction during acceleration and improved safetydue to exceptional grip. So much for thetechnology. But what makes quattro unique isreally the driving feel. “As if you are stuck to theroad,” some customers say. We put it like this:quattro gives you a better feel for the road andthus more safety.The optional quattro with sports differentialfurther reinforces this unmistakeable quattrofeeling. Vehicles tend to experience understeerwhen steering or driving into corners. This isa normal physical process: a moving objectopposes a change in direction. The elastic tyresand the suspension mounts tense up untilthe new direction has been adopted. Whenaccelerating into a corner, the load on the front axle isreduced and it therefore transfers less lateral force tothe tyres – the vehicle understeers. With the sportsdifferential on the rear axle, the tendency toundersteer is largely counteracted.This is because the quattro rear axle differentialhas been extended left and right by a clutchsystem with two gear levels. They ensure that theindividual wheels on the rear axle receivedifferent levels of torque. The clutches areactivated by an electro-hydraulic actuator.Depending, for example, on the steering angle,lateral acceleration, yaw angle and driving speed,the system calculates the right distribution ofwheel torque for any driving situation. In this waythe power is specifically channelled to the outerrear wheel, when steering or accelerating into acorner. The effect: the vehicle is effectivelypressed into the corner by the drive force andfollows the angle of the front wheels. Wedefine it like this: drive exactly how you feel. Withthe optional Audi drive select, you can influenceindividual vehicle components at the push of abutton and so change the character of your Audi.You have up to five modes to choose from: efficiency,comfort, auto, dynamic and, in conjunctionwith one of the optional MMI navigation systems,individual mode, allowing you to determineyourself how the associated vehicle componentsshould behave. The comfort mode is especiallysuitable for providing the most relaxed drivingpossible on long journeys. The auto mode offersa generally comfortable yet sporty drivingexperience. For particularly sporty driving, forexample on winding roads, there is the dynamicmode. The efficiency mode, however, allowsconsumption-improved driving. As an integralcomponent of Audi drive select it is characterisedby energy-enhanced operation of the engine andsecondary consumers such as the air conditioning,as well as changing the shift program in modelswith automatic transmission.In every mode, the vehicle adjustments depend onthe equipment present. Audi drive select affectsthe engine, automatic transmission and steeringas standard. Other features you can also influence– if fitted – include the suspension with dampercontrol, the dynamic steering and the quattro withsports differential. The engine and gears reactmore spontaneously or in a more balanced mannerto movements of the accelerator, depending onthe mode chosen. Moreover, the engine speeds atwhich gear changes take place are varied in modelswith automatic transmission – in dynamic mode,they only happen at higher engine speeds, while incomfort mode they take place at lower ones. 46Audi connectResearch project:“Audi Urban Mobility”Unmanned to the summit.How useful it can be to network a vehicle with its environment is demonstratedby the research project “Audi Urban Mobility”. As part of this project, a vehicle wascreated based on the Audi TTS. In September 2010, this vehicle managed to climbthe 20-kilometre Pikes Peak road in the Rocky Mountains unaided and without a driver.The project featured an electronics system that helps drivers to avoid hazardoussituations. We are applying this know-how to make continual improvements toAudi connect. So that you are more and more connected, and your journeys safer.Audi connect:The intelligent connectionbetween the Internet, the vehicle and you.The world is a network – and your Audi is part ofit. Audi connect not only brings the Internet intoyour vehicle, it also exploits the possibilities thatyour smartphone, tablet or laptop provide. Audi puts various differenttechnologies to work to help you reach yourdestination safely. The assistance systems areclosely networked, which increases theirintelligence, versatility and performance.With the help of these systems, your journeywill be safer and more relaxed.ABadaptive cruise control including Audi pre sense front:*Within the control range from 30 to 200 km/h the automaticdistance control detects vehicles driving in front withinsystem limits using a radar sensor. The distance to thevehicle in front is maintained through automatic braking andacceleration. In addition, Audi braking guard warns thedriver about an imminent collision with the vehicle in frontthrough an extended brake assist feature. If a collision witha stationary or moving vehicle is imminent at a vehicle speedof less than 30 km/h, maximum deceleration is initiated toavoid this collision if possible.Audi active lane assist* supports you when travelling at speeds of around 60 km/h or above, when you inadvertently driftout of your lane, for example, through inattentiveness. Before you cross over the lane marking which is detected by thecamera behind the windscreen, a gentle corrective steering movement occurs. If the indicator has been activated, there isno correction. You have the choice between two system settings (steering point early [A] or late [B]). Identification oflane markings by the sensors is dependent on the weather, lighting and quality of the marking.
