2 | Leading the way in acoustical excellenceAdvanced acoustical expertiseWith more than 60 years of experience in the design and development of electroacoustictechnology, Bosch is an established leader in the field. Their guidingprinciple is to create products that are superior in terms of technology, designand ease of use. From waveguide to array technology, and 3-D simulation tocutting edge design, Bosch’s acoustical expertise is as extensive as it isinnovative. Turning comprehensive experience into world-class acousticalsolutions – that’s how Bosch continues to lead the way.Enabling optimal acousticsAt Bosch, our expertise is in developing superiortechnology for an optimal acoustical environment.Sometimes this means high quality backgroundmusic with a consistent sound level everywhere inthe listening area. Other times, as in the case of anemergency, it means messages which are receivedclearly, with high speech intelligibility – even whenthere is considerable background noise. It’s all madepossible through the technologies developed byBosch: cardioid column loudspeakers, feedbacksuppression, reverberation technology, and manyothers. And Bosch continues to innovate, creatingtoday’s technologies which will become tomorrow’sindustry standards.Investment in R&DBosch’s reputation for producing state of the arttechnologies is largely due to the extensive researchthat it invests in. Its commitment to innovation ishuge: Bosch owns and operates one of Europe’slargest acoustical test and measurement facilities. This test centre has 5 fully equipped anechoic rooms, allowing Bosch to accurately and automaticallymeasure microphones and loudspeakers. Extensivetesting – all done according to internationallyrecognized industry standards – ensures thatcustomers can be confident about the high qualityof every Bosch acoustical product.“With five anechoic rooms Bosch has enormous capacity forextensive acoustical measurement. And everything we learngets funneled back into new product development.”Aldo van Dijk, The Netherlands, Bosch Acoustic Engineer

4 | Leading the way in acoustical excellenceAcoustic evolutionPioneering technologiesFor years now, Bosch has developed technologies that addresssome of the most persistent challenges in the field of acoustics.Legacy technologies – like Bosch’s Cardioid Column Loudspeakerand the Back Plate Electret (BPE) Microphone Transducer –remain immensely popular within the acoustic industry. Othertechnologies are also still widely applied. Adaptive technologieslike Automatic Noise Dependent Audio Signal Processing(ANDAP), for instance, adjust sound so that it can be heard evenwhen the background noise level is high or, like Multi-ChannelReverbration (MCR), actively and electronically adapt a theater’sacoustics without requiring architectural adjustment. And Bosch’salgorithm for feedback suppression is a powerful technology thatis regularly used in both public address and congress systems.

Leading the way in acoustical excellence | 5“Bosch has some great electro-acoustic technologies. But what I really appreciate is how they make my lifeeasier. Their equipment is remarkably robust, and easyto install and maintain.”Göbel Systemtechnik, Germany, Professional InstallerAdvancing developmentsBosch continues to innovate. For instance, Bosch was the first touse passive line array technology in the public address market. Indesigning their new line array loudspeaker, a resourceful use ofpassive filtering ensures a consistent listening experience, withoutthe use of expensive processors.Additionally, advances in active line array technology haveenabled Bosch to extend, as well as more accurately define, thelistening area. Another ingenious solution is represented by theirwide dispersion loudspeaker. By utilizing a radical new form,Bosch has effectively managed to create a powerful hemidirectionalloudspeaker that provides a uniform sound fieldover a large area.

6 | Leading the way in acoustical excellenceCreating effective solutionsA measured approachNumerous tests are done to review how aloudspeaker distributes sound. In addition to qualitycontrol, these tests help expand Bosch’s alreadyconsiderable in-house knowledge and expertise. Andby performing extensive acoustical measurements,Bosch generates a tremendous amount of data aboutits products. This data ensures that propersimulations can be carried out in various acousticsimulation programs, thus helping to ensure theeffectiveness and trustworthiness of its products inreal use.Solutions for a complex worldWhen developing their acoustical products, theBosch team recognizes that real-life environmentscan be often quite complex. Which is why they alwaystake the complete situation into consideration. APPLICATION NOTE | ACTIVE LINE ARRAY LOUDSPEAKERSAPPLICATION NOTE | ACTIVE LINE ARRAY LOUDSPEAKERS32156No amplifier power is required to drive the Intellivoxloudspeakers, because they incorporate their own amplifiers. Each loudspeaker simply has to be connected to asingle-phase 120/230 V (450 VA) power outlet. The 100 Vline is connected directly to the appropriate input on theIntellivox loudspeaker.INTELLIVOX DDCwith distributedpublic address systems4SolutionIntellivox line arrays can easily be incorporated into atypical public address system with switching, amplifiersand 100 V lines. A single Intellivox loudspeaker can beused to deliver superb intelligibility of speech andmusic to extremely large areas, as well as rooms whichpresent a particular acoustic challenge. Requiring lessloudspeakers for any given room cuts costs, shortensinstallation time and means less amplifier power isrequired during operation. In a shopping mall, for instance, the whole central hallcan be covered with just a few Intellivox loudspeakers(1) that blend seamlessly into the interior. Ceilingloudspeakers (2) can be installed in the adjacent corridors, shops and food courts . For the parking lot, horns(3) can be used connected to the same publicaddress system (4).When listening areas overlap, delay units may have tobe used together with the ceiling loudspeakers to synchronizetheir sound with the output of the Intellivoxloudspeaker.87Loudspeaker mounting and configurationBecause the directivity of these loudspeakers is adjustedby software, they can be mounted flat against the wall orin recesses (flush-mounted). A PC running the WinControlsoftware is connected directly to the line array to‘shape’ the loudspeaker’s sound; setting elevation angle, vertical opening angle and focus distance to match therequirements of the room and listening area. If required, the sound color can be adjusted with the built-in parametricequalizer.Once the adjustment is completed, the PC is disconnectedand the loudspeakers are ready to operate. The settings are stored in the loudspeaker, andare retained even if the power supply to the loudspeakersis disrupted.ConfigurationLBC 3251/xx– Intellivox-1b up to Intellivox-6c depending (1)LBC 3256/xx: on size of the area.LBC 3951/01, 9/6W Ceiling loudspeakers : Multiple (2)LBC 3491/12, 15/10W Horn loudspeaker : Multiple (3)LBB 1925/10, Plena 6-zone system pre-amplifier : 1x (4)LBC 193x/00, 120, 240 or 480W Plena booster : 1 or several (5)LBB 1941/00, All-Call Plena call station : 1x (6)LBB 1946/00, 6-zone Plena call station : 1x (7)LBB 1961/00, Plena tuner and CD/MP3 player : 1x (8)Intellivox DDC (Digital Directivity Control) is a range offive active line array loudspeakers with integrated class-Damplifiers and a digital signal processor (DSP) The characteristicsof Intellivox loudspeakers can be adjusted bysoftware to match any environment, literally providing’tailor-made’ audio. They can be used in a variety of venues, includingairports, schools, hotels and shopping malls.IntroductionThe main requirement of a public address system is todistribute attention signals, live speech announcements, stored messages and background music to one or morepublic areas. It should inform the public in general, andalert in emergency situations. This obviously means thatany loudspeakers used must be reliable, and of such qualityso the public can hear these announcements clearly. Theloudspeakers should also be able to operate from switched100 V lines so different zones can be selected and addressedfrom a central point.Summary of requirements• Superb speech intelligibility• Reliable operation• 100 V line compatible• Speech and music reproductionBosch Security SystemsFor more information please visitwww.boschsecuritysystems.comData subject to change without notice | Printed in The Netherlands | 2003 - 9922 141 50441enCommunication you can rely on

APPLICATION NOTE | ACTIVE LINE ARRAY LOUDSPEAKERSAPPLICATION NOTE | ACTIVE LINE ARRAY LOUDSPEAKERS11INTELLIVOX DDC for livespeech amplification323In places of worship, an Intellivox loudspeaker can bemounted on each side of the altar. Because the directivityof these loudspeakers is adjusted by software, they can bemounted flat against the wall or in recesses (flushmounted).A PC running the WinControl software isconnected directly to the line array to ‘shape’ the loudspeaker’ssound; setting elevation angle, vertical openingangle and focus distance to match the requirements ofthe room and listening area. If required, the sound colorcan be adjusted with the built-in parametric equalizer.SolutionOne or two Intellivox loudspeakers (1) are connectedto a Plena universal pre-amplifier (2). The line outputof the Plena is connected directly to the line input onthe DDC Intellivox line array loudspeakers. This connectionis made with a standard shielded cable; thelength of this cable is not critical. The microphone (3)is connected to the Plena pre-amplifier by means of abalanced line. If a condenser microphone is used, onceagain the length of this line is not critical. This configuration is extremely simple and straightforward. No external power amplifiers are required, because the Intellivox line array loudspeakers incorporatetheir own amplifiers. Each loudspeaker simply hasto be connected to a single-phase 120/230 V (450 VA)power outlet. If background music is also required, amusic source can simply be connected to the Plenapre-amplifier, since Intellivox loudspeakers are alsosuitable for music reproduction. And because of theease of set-up and the limited number of components, this configuration is very suitable as a temporaryinstallation.Once the adjustment is completed, the PC is disconnectedand the loudspeakers are ready to operate. The settingsare stored in the loudspeaker, and are retained even if thepower supply to the loudspeakers is disrupted.ConfigurationLBC 3253/xx, Intellivox-2c : 2x (1)LBB 1920/00, Plena universal pre-amplifier : 1x (2)LBC 2900/xx, Dynamic hand-held microphone : 2x (3)Intellivox DDC (Digital Directivity Control) is a range offive active line array loudspeakers with integrated class-Damplifiers and a digital signal processor (DSP). All listeners should be able tohear clearly what is being said. Places of worship are generallyvery reverberant, and sound reflected from hard wallsand ceilings can seriously compromise the quality ofbroadcast sound. Positioning of the loudspeakers is also animportant issue. When listening to amplified live speech, itis more comfortable and natural for listeners if the soundoriginates from beside the person who is speaking. But theloudspeakers should be as unobtrusive as possible, so as notto disturb the aesthetic balance of the room. In auditoriums, live speech is often relayed to neighboring areas suchas press rooms.Summary of requirements• Superb speech intelligibility• Minimized sound reflections• Amplified sound should originate close to theperson speaking• Loudspeakers should not be too prominent• Excellent listening comfort• Maximum gain before feedbackBosch Security SystemsFor more information please visitwww.boschsecuritysystems.comData subject to change without notice | Printed in The Netherlands | 2003 - 9922 141 50431enCommunication you can rely on

APPLICATION NOTE | ACTIVE LINE ARRAY LOUDSPEAKERSAPPLICATION NOTE | ACTIVE LINE ARRAY LOUDSPEAKERS2171647The standard requires that not only the individual elementsbut also the connection between them is constantlymonitored. This is carried out by the Praesideo’s wirelessline supervision (WLS) (7). A high-frequency (20 kHz) pilottone is constantly circulated around all loudspeakerlines, and any faults will cause a relay contact to switch.Intellivox loudspeakers are compatible with this pilot tonemonitoring, so every Intellivox loudspeaker in a networkcan be individually checked.INTELLIVOX DDC and Praesideoin voice evacuation systems53SolutionA self-monitoring voice alarm evacuation system withsuperb speech intelligibility can be created by combiningIntellivox loudspeakers (1) with a Praesideo digital publicaddress/emergency sound system (2-5). The loudspeakersare connected to the 100 V outputs of the Praesideo.A single Intellivox loudspeaker can be used to deliver highqualityspeech intelligibility to extremely large areas, aswell as rooms which present a particular acoustical challenge. No additional amplifier power is required, becausethe DDC Intellivox line arrays incorporate their ownamplifiers. Each loudspeaker simply has to be connectedto a single-phase 120/230 V (450 VA) power outlet.Speech IntelligibilityThe Intellivox loudspeakers ensure that the best achievablespeech intelligibility and sound pressure levels are reachedthroughout the listening area. To make sure the annoucementis made at 10dB above ambient noise, a dedicatednoise sensing microphone is connected for each Intellivoxfor automatic volume control. Neighboring rooms can beaddressed by distributed EVAC compliant loudspeakersalso connected to the Praesideo amplifiers.MonitoringIntellivox speakers check their status continuously in greatdetail and report either to a PC or via input/output relaysto the Praesideo and/or building management systems.Praesideo also checks system integrity continuously andhas the ability to log faults. In the event of any systemfaults being detected, the Praesideo can be configured togenerate an error message and create an error log entry. Aservice engineer can diagnose faults using a PC directlyconnected to the unit or via an on-site network. ForPraesideo even dial-up log-in is available.ReliabilityEach Intellivox loudspeaker comes with dedicatedbuilt-in class-D amplifiers and DSP. If one loudspeakerfails, it does not affect any neighboring loudspeaker so, byhaving two Intellivox line arrays overlapping the samearea, redundancy is achieved. The power supply should besafeguarded by a back-up. Together with the spare amplifierswitching capabilities of Praesideo and the possibility ofusing fire resistant or redundant cabling, single points offailure can be eliminated throughout the system.Loudspeaker mounting and configurationBecause the directivity of these loudspeakers is adjusted bysoftware, they can be mounted flat against the wall or inrecesses (flush-mounted). A PC running the WinControlsoftware is connected directly to the line array to ‘shape’the loudspeaker’s sound; setting elevation angle, verticalopening angle and focus distance to match the requirementsof the room and listening area. Acoustically, evacuation messages must bebroadcast throughout the entire venue, while complyingstrict intelligibility and loudness standards. The integrityof the complete system must be constantly monitored, andany detected faults have to be reported within a pre-specifiedperiod. These requirements, and others, are covered byvarious standards, including the leading international standardIEC 60849 and the British standard BS 5839 part 8.Summary of requirements• Speech intelligibility ≥ 0.5 STI• Sound pressure level of broadcast messages at least10 dB higher than ambient noise• All system elements and signal paths checked every100 seconds• All faults reported within 100 seconds to anon-volatile medium• Power supply back-upBosch Security SystemsFor more information please visitwww.boschsecuritysystems.comData subject to change without notice | Printed in The Netherlands | 2003 - 9922 141 50451enCommunication you can rely on
