Using this as our environmentalslogan, we are making efforts day and night to reduce annual powerconsumption at our offices, encouraging power savings with such practices asturning off unused office machines and unnecessary lights.In fiscal year 2007, however, increased use of computers and air conditioningresulting from the growth in operations caused by active sales expansionproduced a rise in electric power demand. This resulted in an increase of 1%over the previous fiscal year. We intend to continue our efforts from the previousfiscal year to achieve the target.Office WasteFor thorough separation of waste generated in offices, we have improved thearrangement of waste baskets, and are running an in-house campaign to implementwaste segregation in compliance with local regulations. In addition, we promote theeffective use of recyclables: since last fiscal year we have encouraged reusing blankreverse sides of used paper, and using personal coffee and tea cups instead ofdisposable ones.E n v i r o n m e n t a l R e p o r tProper disposal of onboard wasteProper Disposal of Onboard WasteVarious kinds of waste are generated by the crew living on board. Such onboard wasteis thoroughly separated and collected as is done on shore, and is either burned onboard or duly disposed of on shore, except items suitable for ocean disposal afterpulverization, such as food waste. By setting a target for shipboard waste disposedashore an increase of 1% over the previous fiscal year, <strong>Shinwa</strong> <strong>Kaiun</strong> is managing thevolumes and methods of shipboard waste being disposed aboard and ashore.Environmental EducationSeamen's Environmental EducationThe company has formulated and implemented onboard education and trainingthrough On-the-Job Training OJTin addition to classroom training for crews. Theplan includes items related to environmental protection, which serves to bring aboutseamen's awareness of environmental protection through pre-boarding seminars.Environmental Seminar in ManilaClassroom training in ManilaTwice a year, the company dispatches lecturers to hold seminars for Philippineseamen on leave, holds lectures on the environmental management system andstrives to increase environmental awareness among the seamen.<strong>Shinwa</strong> <strong>Kaiun</strong> <strong>Group</strong> <strong>CSR</strong> <strong>Report</strong> <strong>2008</strong> 19
