Friday 9 th September9:00am Site Visit –Mackay South Water Recycling Facility (MSWRF)The MSWRF forms part of the recently completed Mackay Water Recycling Project - one ofthe largest regional reuse schemes of its type in Australia. At the MSWRF, approximately 90 per cent of the region’s wastewater is recycled to Class Awater for reuse on nearby cane farms. From the plant the recycled water travels through6.5km of pipeline to a 2,200 mega litre balance storage pond. In addition, 27 smaller onfarmbalance ponds were constructed to hold the recycled water supplies. The overall project has been recognised for its innovation, clinching the major award at theInfrastructure of Public Works Engineering Australia - Queensland (IPWEAQ) ExcellenceAwards in 2009, along with the Keep Australia Beautiful award in 2009.The MSWRF is also one of the first regional agricultural reuse schemes to submit aRecycled Water Management Plan to DERM.Tenix Alliance-John Holland Joint Venture was instrumental in delivering the $154 millionproject, which plays a key role in water management in the Mackay region.Nebo Road Water Treatment PlantThe Nebo Road Water Treatment Plant (NRWTP) has recently undergone significantupgrades in order to increase the facility’s capacity from 55ML/d to 75ML/d to cater for theregion’s predicted population growth from approximately 116,000 in 2011 to 173,000 in2031.Along with an increase to capacity, the facility also underwent upgrades to improve waterquality and environmental outcomes. The upgrade was provided on a constrained sitewhich posed manly challenges and water quality was maintained throughout theconstruction phase.
