Around the groundsWA• Working hard towards the inaugural Water Future Forum on May 26. Six <strong>YWP</strong>speakers, including two from WA committee will be presenting their current workto other <strong>YWP</strong>s• Looking forward to GWRT (Groundwater Replenishment Trial) tour on <strong>April</strong> 20th.Tour booked out fast, with 20 attendees confirmed during first week of advertising.Will be running another tour in June and October.• Continuing with progress towards launching mentoring program for WA• Natural Disaster flood warningQLD• Very successful mentoring breakfast on 11 March, attracted 13 mentee/mentorpairs. The pairs are now embarking on a year-long mentoring program. AWAboard members also attended the first half of the breakfast event.• Event (13 <strong>April</strong>) “Hydrology: Managing Water in Queensland”. The workshopaims to provide an informative overview of different aspects of hydrology and theirimpact on water management in Queensland. This event was prompted by recentdifficulties in Queensland, caused by both drought and flood, which underlinechallenges to sustainable water management. Have filled the venue’s capacity with100 registrations! Guest speakers are:o Dr Wenju Cai - Principal Research Scientist, Marine & AtmosphericResearch, CSIROo Professor Trevor Grigg - The University of Queensland Business Schoolo Linsday Delzoppo - General Manager, Environment and Natural ResourceRegulation, DERMo Alan Hoban/Sarah Jones - Program Manager/Project Manager, Water byDesign, SEQ Healthy Waterways Partnership• A low-key social event is planned for late May• The Advanced Water Management Centre has requested a presentation to theirstudents regarding <strong>YWP</strong>.


• There is an upcoming full day seminar and workshop called “Water Leaders ofTomorrow Seminar” organised by the International Water Forum (30 May <strong>2011</strong>).AWA is supporting the event (along with Engineers Without Borders and theInternational Water Centre). The event is aimed at students and young waterprofessionals 2-3 years into their career. <strong>YWP</strong>s will deliver a 5 minute “Introductionto AWA <strong>YWP</strong>” and have fliers to promote to all attendees. Event speakers include:o Nathan Cammerman, IWRM Consultingo Jim Pruss, Seqwater• Sharon Ible (AWA QLD Branch Manager) is consolidating our approach to eventsplanning and management. Provides a structure around:o Inclusion of each <strong>YWP</strong> event in the branch budget to facilitate measuring thesuccess of different event typeso Approaching potential sponsors ahead of timeo Publicity for the event and online registrationo Overall aim is to include events in the budget 18 months ahead of timeNSW• Held the first of three seminar series on the 3rd March – Water resources NSW.It included the award of the Peter Cullen scholarship to Daniela Cortez, from theUniversity of Technology Sydney. The next Seminar will be on the 8th June andwill focus on Developing Communities and Disaster Relief• Water Careers Evening at UNSW – as part of the NSW <strong>YWP</strong>’s efforts to promotethe water industry to university students, we held our annual water careersevening at UNSW. About 90 students came to hear from a panel of five waterindustry professionals, representing careers across construction, consulting,research and also included a representative from Sydney Water and a waterindustry recruiter who was able to provide students with job-seeking advice.• Orchard Hills Water Treatment Plant Site Visit – 25 people enjoyed a Fridayafternoon tour of one of Sydney Water’s water treatment plants, followed bylunch.VIC• Successful <strong>YWP</strong> Regional Conference to Geelong (Friday 25 th to Saturday 26 thFebruary <strong>2011</strong>). Barwon Water and Tyco were our sponsors. Over 60 peopleattended from Melbourne and Regional centres. Melbourne participants took thetrain from Southern Cross Station on Friday afternoon supporting oursustainability principles.• In the final stages of finalising our Sustainability Policy.• Vic Branch has completed a Stakeholder Mapping Exercise which one of our YPcommittee members was involved with.• The Membership Subcommittee has been ringing new members to make themfeel welcome and outline upcoming events that they might be interested inattending.• <strong>April</strong> 14 holding a seminar called the Murray Darling Basin: Past, Present andFuture. http://www.awa.asn.au/EventDetail.aspx?id=4294970533SA• New Committee Members: Suzie Lloyd and Bill Fuller (KBR)• Awards Dinner – 19th November, possible James Bond theme


• Social event: Pool competition had 16 people. Overall it was good in terms offun factor and networking. Event profited due to sponsorship. Lessons learn fornext time:o Have a technical side (encourages employer contribution), e.g. success ofGAP tour in Feb 2010o Consider having in February, not March when Fringe etc is ono Potential locations: Coopers Brewery, Osmoflo, Bird in hand + wine tourNTACT• Water in the pub social drinks held in late may with the <strong>Australian</strong> HealthPromotion Association. Great turn out.• Our first technical session is to be help with the <strong>Australian</strong> Health PromotionAssociation, with Carmel Williams presenting on Health in All Policies (WaterSecurity). The event is scheduled to be held on May 25.• AWA Board meeting on June 23, followed by a technical session and dinnerwith the NT Committee.• At least one member attending Ozwater11 in May.• No updateIWAA• Rita’s last meeting before maternity leave• Advertising is in progress fro new IWAA Rep• Handover to new IWAA Rep• Currently organising a <strong>YWP</strong> programme for the IWA Micropol andEcohazard <strong>2011</strong> conference at UNSW in July2. Action Plan finalisation• Strategic Plan Review Process (Rita Henderson – IWA; Alix Campbell – ACT)Review of the Strategic Plan document including the Vision, Mission Statement &Strategic Focus. Also producing documentation to assess <strong>YWP</strong> performance ateach state against the national key action plans• <strong>YWP</strong> Committee Management (Fleur Bound – VIC; Amelia Jewell – QLD)Developing guidelines for succession planning for <strong>YWP</strong> committee positions (e.g.<strong>YWP</strong> committee elections); Committee Role Descriptions (e.g. <strong>YWP</strong> President,Secretary) and potential handbook for <strong>YWP</strong> committees• <strong>YWP</strong>s at National Water Week (Amanda Hazell – <strong>YWP</strong> President; Katrina Annan– WA)Encouraging further <strong>YWP</strong> involvement during National Water Week including theNWW Ambassador program and assisting at State level• Promotion of Student Subscription/H2Oz Careers & Skills Program (Kate Miles– NSW; Amanda Hazell – <strong>YWP</strong> President)

The people ofyour community are left with a very limited water supply that is potentially unsafe to drink.Damage is widespread and you have been supplied with an initial report on the problemshowever more problems may exist. You must devise an action plan to effectively deliversafe drinking water to the households in your community.Consider the legislative, environmental, health, engineering, and commercial impacts, aswell as any other pertinent implications of your strategy.For the final 5min presentation of your action plan some specific questions your groupshould consider are:


• What are the immediate short term priorities?• What are the issues for your specific organisation?• What skills and people do you need to make decisions?• What are the long term impacts of this disaster and future priorities?• What further information do you need to progress?• What are the critical success factors?5. Water Journal Update and YP Newsletter• Katrina writing article for Water Journal, please send contributions and photosyou would like to include (by <strong>April</strong> 15)• Next YP newsletter being put together Will and Kate (royal couple names!).ACTION: All to send contributions for newsletter from various events andcommittees to Kate or Will by May 156. Other Buisness• Amanda making good recovery should be still attending OzWater and back fornext teleconference• Katrina taking new role within the Bureau of Meteorology. Will be moving acrossto Melbourne in August. Hoping to stay on the committee in Vice President role.
