awards programs<br />

Three awards programs have been designed for the <strong>2006</strong> <strong>Nobel</strong> <strong>Biocare</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>Tour</strong> conference.<br />

The accepted entries will be displayed in the conference area so you can view them<br />

throughout the meeting. Take the opportunity to check out the amazing results of the Creative<br />

Circle awards, the outstanding clinical documentation of the C&B&I award competition<br />

and the fantastic research reports from the poster programs.<br />

Poster Program<br />

For the poster program individuals submit a structured abstract and report of a basic or<br />

applied research project, or a detailed explanation of a clinical technique or technology used<br />

in patient therapy. The accepted entries are displayed on large-scale posters where the findings<br />

are presented together with high quality photos documenting the project.<br />

C&B&I awards<br />

The C&B&I competition is divided into three different categories of clinicians. The participants<br />

have submitted documentation of the rehabilitation of a patient using treatment procedures<br />

involving crowns and bridges and implants with <strong>Nobel</strong> <strong>Biocare</strong> products. The report<br />

can be supported by up to eight digital photographs of the therapy.<br />

Creative Circle awards<br />

The Creative Circle competition is designed to demonstrate beauty and esthetics in dental<br />

ceramics. Individuals have submitted documentations of their best ceramic rehabilitation<br />

using the <strong>Nobel</strong>Rondo veneering porcelain. The patient summary includes a description of<br />

the treatment performed together with up to twelve digital photographs of the restorations.<br />

Award ceremony<br />

The award ceremony honoring the most outstanding entries is held on Saturday afternoon<br />

during the general program. Don’t miss the chance to see if the judges shared your views on<br />

the displayed posters and award entries.<br />

Dr.Ajit Shetty walked into<br />

the Government Dental<br />

College in 1973 and<br />

walked out in 1980 with a<br />

graduate degree in dentistry<br />

degree in Oral Diagnosis and Radiology, little<br />

realising that this incurable romantacist had<br />

left behind a host of the fairer sex with their<br />

hearts in their mouth. He is one of the founder<br />

members of the Indian Academy of Aesthetic<br />

and Cosmetic Dentistry (IAACD) and the<br />

Indian Institute of Continuing Education and<br />

Research. He lent his mite to the Indian Dental<br />

Association, being the President of the<br />

Bombay branch in 1994. He is today a most<br />

wanted speaker on the dental scene in India,<br />

with the audience looking forward to sample<br />

his inimitable wit and humour. Dr. Shetty soon<br />

found the science of Implantology to his liking<br />

and in a very short span of time, devoured all<br />

that was available in the country and was travelling<br />

abroad, learning all about Implants.<br />

Within a few years he has established himself<br />

as one of the leading Implantologists of the<br />

country and is the founder member of the<br />

Indian Society of Oral Implantologists. He is<br />

She is one of the pioneers<br />

in the field of pediatric<br />

down South where she laid the foundation of<br />

this specialty, which is 5th in India and first in<br />

a seed to a full-grown tree, under her leadership.<br />

Today many of her students (under graduates<br />

and post graduates) are well-established<br />

academicians and clinicians, in India as well as<br />

abroad.She has been a guide for the post<br />

graduate students for 21 years .Her interest in<br />

academics and research work has encouraged<br />

poatgraduates to carry out 50 studies.She has<br />

also supervised ICMR projects. She has served<br />

as Vice –Dean in the institution from the year<br />

1997-2001. With the vast teaching experience<br />

of 33 years she took up the post of Dean of<br />

institution. She has given a new uplift to the<br />

college by introducing Courses such as<br />

Implant Dentistry and Aesthetic Dentistry.<br />

Roman M. Cibirka, DDS,<br />

maintained a practice limited to prosthodontics<br />

Georgia where he serves as the Associate Vice<br />

and subsequently became an Associate<br />

Professor at the same Institute. I am a member<br />

of the Indian Prosthodontic Society and have<br />

University of Texas, Houston, Texas, USA. Dr.<br />

Kohal is Board Certified in Prosthodontics by<br />

the German Society of Prosthodontics and<br />

Dental Materials (DGZPW). In 2002, he was<br />

awarded docentship (Dr. Med. Dent. Habil.) in<br />

Oral Health Sciences through the University of<br />

Freiburg. Currently, he is an Associate Professor<br />

at the Department of Prosthodontics in<br />

Freiburg. His main interests are located in the<br />

field of implantology (in-vivo and in-vitro<br />

investigations regarding guided bone regeneration<br />

and the application of new implant<br />

materials). Dr. Kohal is a member of several<br />

national and international societies (German<br />

Society of Prosthodontics, German Society of<br />

Implantology, German Society of<br />

Periodontology, American Association of<br />

Periodontology, International Association of<br />

Dental Research). He published some 30<br />

national and international papers and gave lectures,<br />

seminars and workshops worldwide.<br />

DR. A. KUMARSWAMY<br />

Dr. A.Kumarswamy<br />

(Bombay) is a graduate<br />

from the 1979 batch from<br />

G.D.C. He went on to<br />

complete his masters in<br />

Periodontology from the<br />

same college. He started his private practice in<br />

Mumbai with a special emphasis on<br />

Periodontology. Today he is one of the<br />

renowned Periodontists of the country with a<br />

multifaceted activity in the field of dentistry.<br />

He, along with fellow colleagues, launched the<br />

Indian Academy of Aesthetic and Cosmetic<br />

Dentistry (IAACD) and the Indian Institute of<br />

Continuing Education & Research in 1991,92.<br />

This involvement saw him on the move (naturally<br />

speaking), continuously across the length<br />

and breadth of India and also across geographical<br />

boundaries to the U.S and Europe to<br />

participate in Periodontal and Aesthetic<br />

Conferences. As an active member of the<br />

Indian Society of Periodontology, he was<br />

instrumental in founding the India Section of<br />

the International Academy of Periodontology,<br />

launched in 1997.

Dr. Brien R. Lang received<br />

his DDS degree from the<br />

University of Michigan,<br />

1965, and was appointed Chair of<br />

Academy of Prosthodontics, the 1997-Daniel<br />

Gordon from the American College of<br />

Prosthodontists. He is a past President of the<br />

Academy of Prosthodontics, and the American<br />

Board of Prosthodontics. He is currently Chair<br />

of the Editorial Council For The Journal of<br />

DR. GLEN LIDDELOW<br />

Graduated with a BCSc<br />

from the University of<br />

Western Australia in 1991<br />

and completed a<br />

Fellowship of the Royal<br />

Australasian College of<br />

Dental Surgeons in 1995. He became a Fellow<br />

of the Pierre Fauchard Academy in 2000. Dr<br />

Liddelow is a committee member of the<br />

Australian Prosthodontic Society, a member of<br />

the Australasian Osseointegration Society and<br />

the Academy of Osseointegration. Dr Liddelow<br />

is a private practitioner at the Branemark<br />

Centre Perth, Western Australia and faculty<br />

member of the Perth Osseointegration<br />

Training Centre. Dr Liddelow has a practice<br />

primarily concerned with both the surgical and<br />

restorative aspects of implant dentistry. His<br />

research interests include the simplification of<br />

implant treatment for general practice, immediate<br />

loading and surface technology.<br />

Some of them are placed under conscious<br />

sedation, in her clinic, which is fully equipped<br />

with all the recommended monitoring, and<br />

emergency equipment. She has a fully<br />

equipped Dental Operating Microscope for<br />

use with all root canal therapies including retreatments<br />

and broken instrument retrievals,<br />

and uses it extensively. She has given lectures<br />

at international meetings, on Microscope<br />

Enhanced Dentistry, in the USA. Her motto is<br />

to keep on improving the level of dentistry in<br />

her practice by constantly upgrading her skill,<br />

DR. PETER S. WÖHRLE<br />

Dr. Peter S. Wöhrle<br />

received his DMD degree<br />

«cum laude» and a Master<br />

of Medical Sciences in<br />

Oral Biology from the<br />

Harvard School of Dental<br />

Medicine (1988). In addition, Dr. Wöhrle completed<br />

the Advanced Education Program in<br />

Prosthodontics and the Advanced Education<br />

Program in Implant Dentistry at Harvard, and<br />

a four-year certified dental technician program<br />

in Switzerland. While at Harvard, he worked<br />

with his mentor, Dr. Paul Schnitman, on the<br />

groundbreaking concept of immediate loading<br />

of Branemark implants. Once in private practice<br />

in Newport Beach, California, Dr. Wöhrle<br />

applied these principles to the concept of<br />

immediate tooth replacement in the aesthetic<br />

zone. More recently, Dr. Wöhrle developed the<br />

<strong>Nobel</strong>Perfect ® scalloped margin implant system.<br />

Furthermore, Dr. Wöhrle conceived the<br />

digital wide-screen format that many<br />

lecturers have adopted worldwide. He is a<br />

member of the Academy of Osseointegration,<br />

DR. BRIEN R. LANG<br />

Dr. Brien R. Lang received<br />

his DDS degree from the<br />

University of Michigan,<br />

School of Dentistry in 1961<br />

and Master of Science in<br />

Prosthodontics in 1965. He<br />

joined the Michigan faculty in 1965, and was<br />

appointed Chair of Prosthodontics in 1987.<br />

He has combined teaching, research and private<br />

practice while at Michigan. He became<br />

Director of the <strong>Nobel</strong> <strong>Biocare</strong>/University of<br />

Michigan Center For Excellence in 1994. He<br />

received the «1972 Paul Gibbons Award» presented<br />

by the dental Senior Class at Michigan<br />

in recognition for his contributions to their<br />

education. He received the 1994-Jerome M<br />

and Dorothy Schweitzer Research Award from<br />

the Greater New York Academy of<br />

Prosthodontics, the 1997-Daniel Gordon from<br />

the American College of Prosthodontists. He is<br />

a past President of the Academy of<br />

Prosthodontics, and the American Board of<br />

Prosthodontics. He is currently Chair of the<br />

Editorial Council For The Journal of Prosthetic<br />

Dentistry.<br />

DR. JONATHAN L.<br />

FERENCZ<br />

Dr. Jonathan Ferencz<br />

graduated from<br />

Rensselaer Polytechnic<br />

Institute in 1967 and New<br />

York University College of<br />

Dentistry in 1971. He joined the faculty at NYU<br />

in 1972 where he has taught pre-clinical,<br />

undergraduate clinical and post-doctoral<br />

prosthodontics. In 1990, Dr. Ferencz became<br />

Clinical Professor of Post-Graduate<br />

Prosthodontics and was certified by the<br />

American Board of Prosthodontics in 1998.<br />

Active in dental organizations for many years,<br />

Dr. Ferencz became a Fellow of the Greater<br />

New York Academy of Prosthodontics in 1984<br />

and served as its President in 1995. He<br />

became a Fellow of the Northeastern<br />

Gnathological Society in 1988 and its President<br />

in 1995 and 1996. He has served in many leadership<br />

positions in the American College of<br />

Prosthodontists and was its President in 2003.<br />

In addition, Dr. Ferencz is a Fellow of the<br />

Academy of Prosthodontics, New York Academy<br />

of Dentistry and a member of the American<br />

Academy of Restorative Dentistry and the<br />

American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics. In<br />

addition to private practice and part-time<br />

teaching at NYU, Dr. Ferencz has been very<br />

active in continuing dental education, having<br />

given over 150 courses and programs<br />

throughout the United States and several<br />

other countries.<br />

Baldwin Marchack is a<br />

Dentistry. In 1989, he<br />

received his MBA from the UCLA Graduate<br />

School of Management. Dr Marchack belongs<br />

to numerous professional organizations including<br />

the American Prosthodontic Society, the<br />

Academy of Prosthodontics, the Pacific Coast<br />

Society for Prosthodontics, the International<br />

College of Prosthodontists, the Academy of<br />

Osseointegration, and the American Academy<br />

of Esthetic Dentistry. He is a Fellow of the<br />

American College of Dentists, a Fellow of the<br />

International College of Dentists, a Fellow of<br />

the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and a Fellow of the<br />

Academy of General Dentistry. He presently serves<br />

on the Executive Council of the Pacific Coast<br />

Society for Prosthodontics, the Executive Council of<br />

the American Prosthodontic Society, the Board of<br />

Councilors of the USC School of Dentistry, and is<br />

Vice-Chair of the Editorial Council for the Journal<br />

of Prosthetic Dentistry. Dr Marchack is the current<br />

President of the American Academy of Esthetic<br />

Dentistry and maintains a private practice in<br />

Pasadena, California.<br />

DR. SONIA LEZIY<br />

Sonia Leziy, DDS received<br />

her DDS from McGill<br />

University in 1989 and a<br />

post-graduate degree in<br />

periodontics from the<br />

University of British<br />

Columbia in 1993. Dr. Leziy has recently completed<br />

the requirements for the Royal College<br />

of Dentists of Canada Fellowship in<br />

Periodontics. She is a member of the British<br />

Columbia Society of Periodontists, the<br />

Canadian Academy of Periodontists, an international<br />

member of The American Academy<br />

of Periodontists and a Fellow of the<br />

International Congress of Oral Implantologists.<br />

She is presently a clinical assistant professor at<br />

the University of British Columbia, co-mentors<br />

the Vancouver Multidisciplinary Implant Study<br />

Group Seminars, and lectures nationally and<br />

internationally on advanced implant esthetics.<br />

Dr. Leziy maintains a full-time private practice<br />

in the Pacific Perio Prosthetic Group, specializing<br />

in periodontics and implant surgery. An<br />

accepted article on the replacement of adjacent<br />

missing anterior teeth with scalloped<br />

implants, co-authored by Dr. Leziy, will be<br />

published in an upcoming issue of Practical<br />

Procedures & Aesthetic Dentistry.

DR. STEVE PAREL<br />

Dr. Parel is a Diplomate<br />

of the American Board<br />

of Prosthodontics, the<br />

American and International<br />

College of Dentists, and is<br />

a member of many professional<br />

organizations, including the American<br />

Dental Association, the Academy of Prosthodontics,<br />

and the American College of Prosthodontics.<br />

His literature contributions include over<br />

45 scientific articles as principal author, and multiple<br />

textbook contributions. He was editor and<br />

co-author of Esthetics and Osseointegration, a<br />

landmark reference source for implant dentistry. He<br />

authored his second book, The SmiLine System in<br />

1991, and recently completed a third book,<br />

Esthetic Implant Restorations. He is past president<br />

of both the American Academy of Maxillofacial<br />

Prosthetics and the Academy of<br />

Osseointegration. Dr. Parel is currently a professor<br />

at Baylor College of Dentistry – Texas A&M<br />

University System Health Science Center and<br />

director of the Center of Oral Maxillofacial<br />

Prosthodontics in the Department of Oral and<br />

Maxillofacial Surgery/ Pharmacology.<br />

DR. JÖRG R. STRUB<br />

Prof. Dr. J. R. Strub, born in<br />

1948, received his DDS,<br />

Dr. Med. Dent., and PhD<br />

degrees from the University<br />

of Zurich, Switzerland. He<br />

was a Visiting Professor of<br />

Biomaterials at Louisiana State University and was<br />

formerly Associate Professor and co-director of<br />

the Graduate Program in Periodontal Prosthetics<br />

at the University of Zurich. Since 1988 Dr. Strub<br />

has been Professor and Chair of the Department<br />

of Prosthodontics at the Albert-Ludwigs University<br />

in Freiburg, Germany. Dr. Strub is married and<br />

has one child.<br />

MR. ERNST A. HEGENBARTH<br />

Mr. Hegenbarth received<br />

his master dental technologist<br />

degree following<br />

extensive experience as a<br />

dental technician and<br />

ceramist in Germany. He is<br />

the owner of Zen Line Dental, an advanced dental<br />

laboratory with an attached post-graduate<br />

teaching institute focusing on Premium dental<br />

restorations for international customers. Zen Line<br />

Dental is also a consultancy for marketing and<br />

development of ceramic products, education<br />

and publishing. He is the developer of the<br />

Creative Color System and the concept for the<br />

new <strong>Nobel</strong>Rondo – Creative Circle ceramics for<br />

Alumina and Zirconia. As a member of the<br />

European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and the<br />

American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, he has<br />

lectured at numerous international meetings and<br />

conducts seminars for postgraduate students and<br />

ceramists around the world. He also serves on<br />

the editorial boards of several journals and has<br />

published a textbook with Quintessence. Creative<br />

Ceramic Color: A Practical System, as well as articles<br />

in several dental journals on esthetics, dental<br />

implants, dental ceramics and CAD/CAM<br />

Dr. Carol A. Lefebvre<br />

received her DDS in 1983<br />

and MS in Prosthodontics<br />

in 1986 from the University<br />

of Michigan. Dr. Lefebvre is<br />

a Professor in the Departments<br />

of Oral Rehabilitation and Oral Biology at<br />

the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry<br />

and the School of Graduate Studies and is<br />

Section Director of Removable Prosthodontics in<br />

the Department of Oral Rehabilitation. She is a<br />

recipient of the School of Dentistries Excellence<br />

in Teaching and Outstanding Faculty Awards. Dr.<br />

Lefebvre is a Diplomate of the American Board<br />

of Prosthodontics, a Fellow in the Academy of<br />

Prosthodontics and the American College of<br />

Prosthodontists, and a member of the American<br />

Dental Education Association, American Association<br />

of Dental Research and the International<br />

Association of Dental Research. She is the Editor<br />

of The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Dr. Lefebvre<br />

was recently selected as a 2005–<strong>2006</strong> fellow in<br />

the ELAM (Executive Leadership in Academic<br />

Medicine) program.<br />

DR. REGINA MERICSKE-<br />

STERN<br />

Regina Mericske-Stern is<br />

currently the Director and<br />

Chairman of the<br />

Department of Prosthodontics,<br />

University of Bern.<br />

She completed her graduate training in<br />

Restorative Dentistry and in Prosthodontics in<br />

Bern and Toronto, and in Oral Surgery in Basle.<br />

She received her Ph.D in Bern. She is still a frequent<br />

guest professor of the University of Toronto.<br />

She is a Specialist in Prosthodontics (SSRD) and<br />

in Implantology (SGI) and frequently lectures at<br />

international meetings on these topics.<br />

Her teaching obligations are tooth- and implantsupported<br />

prostheses and geriatric dentistry. The<br />

students elected her «Teacher of the Year». She<br />

is a member of various national and international<br />

societies, board member and president elect of<br />

the International College of Prosthodontics (ICP)<br />

the President of the Scientific Committee of the<br />

Swiss Society for Reconstructive Dentistry (SSRD)<br />

and President Elect of the Swiss Society of Oral<br />

Implantology (SSOI). Her activities, both in clinical<br />

practice and clinical research, cover the field<br />

of oral implantology/implant prosthodontics and<br />

geriatric dentistry. These are represented in various<br />

publications, abstracts and book chapters.<br />

DR. PETER K. MOY<br />

Dr. Moy received his dental<br />

degree from the University<br />

of Pittsburgh, a certificate in<br />

General Practice Residency<br />

from Queen’s Medical<br />

Center in Honolulu, Hawaii<br />

and his certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial<br />

Surgery from UCLA Hospital and Medical Center<br />

.He presently limits his practice to Oral and<br />

Maxillofacial Surgery focusing primarily in the<br />

areas of Osseointegrated dental implants and the<br />

reconstruction of the severely atrophic ridges. He<br />

is currently on staff in the departments of Oral<br />

and Maxillofacial Surgery as well as Hospital<br />

Dentistry at UCLA. He is also the Co-director of<br />

the UCLA Dental Implant Center. Dr.Moy has written<br />

numerous articles related to Implant Dentistry<br />

and Osseointegration, specifically, on bone grafting<br />

and augmentation procedures for the<br />

atrophic ridges. He has lectured nationally and<br />

internationally, most recently at the 98th Annual<br />

Meeting of the American Association of Oral and<br />

Maxillofacial Surgeons. He established and maintains<br />

his private practice in theWest Coast Center<br />

for Osseointegration located in Brentwood,<br />

Professor Massimo<br />

Simion is Chairman<br />

of the Department of<br />

Periodontology and<br />

Implant Restoration at<br />

University of Milan. He is a founder of the<br />

Italian Society of Osseontegration and one of<br />

the first experts in implant surgery in Italy.<br />

Actually, he is an Active Member and Vice-<br />

President of the Italian Society of Periodontology<br />

(SidP) for the years 2003– 2005. He is<br />

Member of the Board of the European<br />

Association for Osseointegration (EAO) since<br />

1998 and he has been President of the same<br />

Association from the years 2001 to 2003. As a<br />

Professor Simion evaluate papers related<br />
